Yes, it can be added of course.

I'm not opposed to osa-latn if it's needed as a distinct thing. Consider simply entering the Latin script as transliteration where needed.

I can also add it to translatewiki, if anyone is interested in starting a wiki in it some day.

I don't have character support for the new Osage script and it's not the one I learned or the one I have reference materials in, so I'm unlikely to use it. I don't have a problem with specifying the script every time I use the language code.

I am not among active users of the language, though, and I can't speak at all to their usage.

@Linguoboy, can you please give examples of values that you will add, and according to which orthographic or transliteration system? This will help define the best values.

An example is that I'd like to create an item for the Osage principal chief Baconrind, whose native name is transcribed by Carolyn Quintero in her Osage Dictionary as Wašį́haa. This is what is known as a "Siouanist" transcription, reflecting the way scholars writing on Siouan languages like Osage and Lakota have transcribed the languages in their works.

Thank you, this is exactly the kind of answer I needed.

This will definitely be done, but I want to do it The Right Way, so I forwarded it to the Language Committee mailing list to get more opinions about the best configuration.

I couldn't get a response from other people in the language committee. I don't want to block this, and I want to allow both Osage and Latin scripts in a proper and structured way.

Technically, can we do osa that will default to the Osage script, and osa-latn for people who want to write in Latin? It looks like the people who want to use the language for producing books and websites prefer the Osage script, and linguists who write about the language prefer Latin transliteration.

That's a fair assessment based on what I've seen and this seems like a fine solution to me. If you'd like, I'm willing to contact the Osage Nation to get their input.

Please do so, so we know how to properly code this.

I doubt they have much of a view on this. The initial request seems to be concerned primarily with "osa-latn", maybe we could just do that.
