From Proto-Finnic *parvi, possibly related to parvi (etymology 1), perhaps originally in the sense "group of logs joined together", or from a separate Proto-Uralic root. Cognates include Estonian parv (raft), Ingrian parvi (shelf, balcony), Northern Khanty пөр (pør, raft) and Tundra Nenets [script needed] (pārī).
