Origin disputed. Probably from Vulgar Latin *miccus, from Doric Greek μῑκκός (mīkkós), variant of Attic Greek μικρός (mikrós, small, young). Compare Megleno-Romanian and Romanian mic and, mostly, Aromanian njic. See also mīca for further comparison. Doublet of miccu.
