ordagrann
Swedish
editEtymology
editAdjective
editordagrann (not comparable)
- literal (exactly matching or corresponding to the original word(s))
- Synonym: bokstavlig
- en ordagrann översättning
- a literal/word-for-word translation
- "Mardi gras" betyder ordgrant "fet tisdag"
- "Mardi gras" literally means "fat Tuesday"
- word-for-word, verbatim
- Det är ordagrant vad han sa
- It is word-for-word what he said
Usage notes
editBokstavlig and the corresponding adverb bokstavligen often imply notability when quoting. When quoting something that might be considered outrageous, as an example, bokstavligen emphasizes that those were actually the exact words. Ordagrant (adverb) can also be used in that case, but is inherently more neutral, and is more common than bokstavligen for word-for-word, verbatim, and the like.
