On IRC you said you wanted something to do with the banzai tree. Does it have to be the banzai, can it be a different tree? You see, I'm having a bit of trouble finding a free banzai-related image. Thanks, Rock drum Ba-dumCrash (Review me) 10:12, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Reuse of images from Wikipedia in copyrighted articles

edit

Hi Sage, are such cases collected somewhere? I think I have never seen actual cases covered anywhere yet but just noticed this one. Could the matter be something for the Signpost? -- Daniel Mietchen 10:46, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I don't know of any central place where such cases are collected. Template:Published is the standard way to mark such cases, I think; it has a paramater, "legal=no", that can be used to mark license violations. If we added a category that got included when that parameter is there, we could see what ones have already been documented.--ragesoss (talk) 16:05, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ah, it's already been done. Category:Images used by media organizations but violating license terms. --ragesoss (talk) 16:07, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
If the images are under CC-BY-SA and Springer didn't name source and license, it would appear to be a license violation. However, whether the use of the images would require them to put the whole article under CC-BY-SA is (to my knowledge) an open question - last year, the WMF's Erik Möller said that such a "strong copyleft" effect would be desirable, but that CC-BY-SA hadn't yet developed "clear and unambiguous language to this effect".
The Signpost recently had this story which mentioned such unauthorized reuse cases in a larger context. A single example normally wouldn't appear to be material for a full story, but a reaction from Springer would make it more newsworthy.

Thanks for the info everyone. I added the template to the images. Three of them were actually in the public domain, the Wikipedia license terms were violated in two cases. -- Daniel Mietchen 19:39, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

ambassadors handbk

edit
  • I added a couple comments to the talk page of the ambassador's hndbk on Wikimedia. Dunno where exactly it should go (on Wikipedia, Wikimedia, etc.), and am a bit busy so don't have time to look into it at the moment. Hope to work more in the near future. later! • Ling.Nut 13:56, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
