GA on hold

edit

This article looks really good with plenty of inline citations. However, I have a few suggestions that should be fixed before I pass it according to the GA criteria.

Fix these suggestions if applicable:

  1. Since the article is named Riverina, I don't think that "The" needs to be bold, just Riverina itself. (now completed)
  2. The lead should be expanded due to the large length of the article. See WP:Lead for suggestions. (lead has been extensively rewritten and expanded - for other editors consideration)
  3. Go throughout the article and make sure that all of the inline citations directly follow the punctuation with no space in between. I noticed one in the lead and a couple in the Wine and Politics sections. (now completed)
  4. Add wikilinks or fix disambiguation links: confluence (dab), Great Dividing Range (wikilink in the Geography section), geology, diamonds, clays, saline, fauna, flora, ecosystem, cattle, sheep, manifesto, weirs, rice, wheat, maize, canola, citrus, & wine grapes.(now completed)
  5. The images for the most part look really good, and it's great that there are so many in the article to help present the information. For the very first image, its caption has a duplicate "the the", remove one of them. For the image Image:CSU crest.png, it needs a fair use rationale. (new image uploaded)
  6. "The terrain includes rolling hills to the east, becoming flatter to the west. Most of the plain is less than 200 metres above sea level." Combine the two sentences. (now completed)
  7. In the second paragraph in the climate section, millimeters is spelled out twice and then abbreviated twice. I'm sure you could spell it out once and then use abbreviations for the rest. Also a space is needed between 500-800mm. For the first paragraph in the Riverina bioregion section, per cent is spelled out and the symbol is used a sentence later. Stick to one or other throughout the article. (now completed)
  8. The single sentence standing by itself in the Exploration and pastoral settlement should either be expanded or incorporated into one of the other paragraphs. This occurs a few times throughout the article, make sure to fix them all.
  9. Add (MIA) after Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area in the Irrigation and closer settlement section since you reference to it a paragraph later. Also in that paragraph, there is a missing period at the end of the paragraph. (now completed)
  10. "For the first several decades of European pastoral activity from the 1830s, cattle were mainly grazed..." I'm not sure if this is proper usage or not, go by the Australian English and ignore if necessary. "Were mainly grazed" doesn't sound right, if you can, reword it. (sentence now altered - for other editors consideration)
  11. Remove the extra period after the [48] citation in the wool section. (now completed)
  12. I think the heading should be changed from Sport to Sports. There is also an extra space between Lockhart and the period at the end of the section. There is an extra space between the Sport section and the Culture section, see if you can remove it if possible; it may be due to the location of the image. (now completed)
  13. There is an extra space after Victorian Opera in the Culture section before the period. You can transfer it over to the lack of space between the comma and Spiderbait in the sentence after it. (now completed)

Add inline citations:

  1. In general, the Riverina is an alluvial plain formed by deposition carried from the Great Dividing Range by streams 15,000 - 30,000 years ago.
  2. Aboriginal people are thought to have inhabited the Riverina for 40,000 years.

For the most part, an excellent job on the article. Just fix the above suggestions within seven days and I'll pass the article. Please let me know on my talk page when you finish or if you have any questions. --Nehrams2020 07:57, 6 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Out of date

edit

Wagga Wagga's population is declining slowly and is aging with strong growth in age groups 40 and over. is incorrect and the source is out of date as the latest ABS has Wagga's Pop at over 58,000 people (2001 it was 56,000). Don't know whether this could be of any use [1]. -- Bidgee 03:07, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Added info on Wagga Wagga and "sponge" city phenomenon. Feel free to edit should you feel it necessary. Good find.--Mattinbgn/ talk 12:20, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

GA passed

edit

I have passed this article according to the GA criteria. The spacing of the references still need to be fixed in the Rice section (#53 before the comma) and the Wine section (space between 47 and 56), and a couple in the Politics section. Also, one of the images appears to have been deleted, either remove it or reupload the image if possible. To help the article keep its GA status, make sure that all new information added to the article is accurate and properly cited. Altogether, the article looks great, keep up the good work! --Nehrams2020 08:13, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, thanks Nehrams2020. Your suggestions prompted a significant improvement in the article. I guess the next step from here is WP:FA. That process may require a great deal more work. A reminder of where we came from; on 2007-01-08, the article looked like this. Well done all!--Mattinbgn/ talk 09:35, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Population

edit

Population please. --MacRusgail 10:55, 18 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

See the first sentence in Riverina#Cities, towns and settlements. It is not technically for the Riverina region, but for all intents and purposes the difference is not material. -- Mattinbgn/ talk 11:03, 18 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Outside Comment

This article is seriously good! Honestly, what steps are required to get this to FA? I'm happy to help if I can. Orderinchaos 03:31, 30 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the offer to help. The three things I think this article needs are
  • A good thorough copy-edit and proof-read.
  • Better sources for some of the history section, especially the steamboats and German settlement. Local historical societies and local council websites are a good start but not particularly authoritative.
  • The red links need articles created or the redlinks removed. Unfortunately, some of the redlinks were blue when the article was expanded, such as the football leagues and the Riverina Theatre company. This is a real concern with the Aboriginal groups in particular.
I am keen to take this to FA but I am not sure if it would pass at this stage without these items at the least being fixed. Cheers, Mattinbgn/ talk 12:03, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Radio

edit

I want to use this link http://www.abc.net.au/riverina/about.htm but not quite sure where, interesting historical tidbit and new perspective on region though doesn't contradict anything. Where does it fit - facilities or culture? - I think the former.--Matilda talk 20:30, 9 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, it is a cultural facility so facilities is probably a more useful spot. Remember that a large chunk of the southern Riverina pick up ABC radio from here. -- Mattinbgn\talk 21:36, 9 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

This article is seriously misleading

edit

"The Riverina is distinguished from other Australian regions by the combination of flat plains, warm to hot climate and an ample supply of water for irrigation."

To say the Riverina has ample water for irrigation is seriously misleading. The Murray-Darling system is on the verge of dying (in part) because of huge over-allocation of irrigation waters along its length. The Riverina has historically been operated as if the water was limitless using profligate flood irrigation and employing miles of wasteful open canals. In recent years irrigators have not been permitted their full allocations because it was in aggregate more than was actually available. Additionally land salinisation due to bad irrigation practices is widespread in the M-D basin. While the area has been a food bowl in the past this is quite unsustainable under the current regime.

The region is subject to periodic drought due to ENSO events as is all of eastern Australia. In the riverina the problem is compounded because of reduced local rainfall is combined with reduced flows from upstream during drought as far away as Queensland. The States have been in conflict over water allocations for years with the Riverina and others downstream users claiming those upstream, particularly in north west NSW and QLD, withdraw far too much water. The article fails to mention that growing crops like rice and cotton using irrigation on the driest continent is viewed by some as an anomalous folly which has only been possible as governments have for years failed to put a reasonable value on the available water, in effect giving water to those growers for the sake of short term cash crops and foreign exchange. There is a risk that the situation will be exacerbated by climate change - not to mention ongoing political infighting and failure to take some hard decisions.

To not mention the precarious situation of the whole M-D basin and the Riverina in particular due to natural causes and gross mismanagement paints a quite false view of the future of the Riverina and glosses over damage brought about by uncomprehending irrigation practices which have been common in the MIA.

I cannot imagine how the quality of this article could be rated so highly as it leaves out any mention of these important issues and allows the casual reader to think that all is rosy in the Riverina.

I also thought the water issues needed to be added to the article. Ariconte (talk) 18:57, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Comapared to other regions in Australia, irrigation water has been historically plentiful. Drought has been mentioned in the article but too much of an emphasis would be WP:RECENTISM. The article links to articles such as Murray-Darling Basin where issues relating to water are discussed in detail and in the appropriate place, as all of these issues are quite wider than just the Riverina.
"The article fails to mention that growing crops like rice and cotton using irrigation on the driest continent is viewed by some as an anomalous folly which has only been possible as governments have for years failed to put a reasonable value on the available water, in effect giving water to those growers for the sake of short term cash crops and foreign exchange." is entirely WP:POV and would be rejected quite emphatically by many of the people living in the area. If you want to write an article about Ecological disasters in the Riverina feel free but the mentions of drought in the article are to my mind sufficient given the need to maintain balance in the article. -- Mattinbgn\talk 20:04, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • In relation to this point, Mattinbgn is absolutely correct - compared to other regions in Australia, irrigation water has been historically plentiful in the overall view of the Riverina region - and to overly adjust this would not reflect that fact accurately.--VS talk 21:47, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps a suitable compromise would be to replace "ample" with "plentiful" in the quoted sentence. To me, the former would imply that there is more than enough water for current and future usage, while the latter merely implies a large water resource (at least in relative terms). This might more accurately reflect the situation without changing the article to be overly POV. Adacore (t·c) 15:34, 16 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Bland Shire in the Riverina?

edit

An interesting submission to a NSW Government panel by Bland Shire seems to indicate that they see themselves as part of the Riverina rather than the Central West. Interested in others' thoughts? -- Mattinbgn (talk) 01:00, 9 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
