Question from Scriptscrap (16:50, 23 October 2024)
[edit]Can I create a personal list of articles about a subject as somewhat of a checklist. Sort of like you would check off birds in a bird book? I see the watch list which is similar to what I am thinking but what if I want different lists for different things? Like check off a list of all math articles that I have read or all scientists that I have added books about to my book collection. --Scriptscrap (talk) 16:50, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- Scriptscrap, the only thing I am aware of is the mobile app which allows you to create lists. Apologies for the late response. — Qwerfjkltalk 11:41, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you @Qwerfjkl! I will take a look at that. Scriptscrap (talk) 14:13, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
Administrator Elections: Voting phase
[edit]The voting phase of the October 2024 administrator elections has started and continues until 23:59 31st October 2024 UTC. You can participate in the voting phase at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Voting phase.
As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:
- October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase
- November 1–? - Scrutineering phase
In the voting phase, the candidate subpages will close to public questions and discussion, and everyone who qualifies for a vote will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote tallies cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's tally during the election. The suffrage requirements are different from those at RFA.
Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time, perhaps a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose). As this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").
Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

Updates for editors
- Later in November, the Charts extension will be deployed to the test wikis in order to help identify and fix any issue. A security review is underway to then enable deployment to pilot wikis for broader testing. You can read the October project update and see the latest documentation and examples on Beta Wikipedia.
- View all 32 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, Pediapress.com, an external service that creates books from Wikipedia, can now use Wikimedia Maps to include existing pre-rendered infobox map images in their printed books on Wikipedia. [1]
Updates for technical contributors
- Wikis can use the Guided Tour extension to help newcomers understand how to edit. The Guided Tours extension now works with dark mode. Guided Tour maintainers can check their tours to see that nothing looks odd. They can also set
emitTransitionOnStep
totrue
to fix an old bug. They can use the new flagallowAutomaticBack
to avoid back-buttons they don't want. [2] - Administrators in the Wikimedia projects who use the Nuke Extension will notice that mass deletions done with this tool have the "Nuke" tag. This change will make reviewing and analyzing deletions performed with the tool easier. [3]

Marathon Petroleum Corporation Logo Assistance
[edit]Hello, I noticed that you have made some edits to the Marathon Petroleum Corporation page in the past and I was hoping you could help me replace the logo that is there now. The logo for branded Marathon retail gas stations was updated recently but not the the corporate one. "...the retail brand debuted a new Endurance image, including a retooled logo..." https://csnews.com/marathon-petroleum-goes-live-new-retail-brand-campaign https://csnews.com/marathon-unveils-new-image-branded-gas-stations
The accurate logo can be found on the Marathon Petroleum Corporation website here: https://www.marathonpetroleum.com/Newsroom/Corporate-Logos-and-Standards/ Is this something you would be able to help with? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:19B:8301:B5A0:241F:9AA:2CD6:28C3 (talk) 15:12, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- 2601:19B:8301:B5A0:241F:9AA:2CD6:28C3, hi! I don't really see the difference in logos. Regardless, the place to go is Wikipedia:Files for upload to upload the new logo. Updates for editors
- Stewards can now make global account blocks cause global autoblocks. This will assist stewards in preventing abuse from users who have been globally blocked. This includes preventing globally blocked temporary accounts from exiting their session or switching browsers to make subsequent edits for 24 hours. Previously, temporary accounts could exit their current session or switch browsers to continue editing. This is an anti-abuse tool improvement for the Temporary Accounts project. You can read more about the progress on key features for temporary accounts. [4]
- Wikis that have the CampaignEvents extension enabled can now use the Collaboration List feature. This list provides a new, easy way for contributors to learn about WikiProjects on their wikis. Thanks to the Campaign team for this work that is part of the 2024/25 annual plan. If you are interested in bringing the CampaignEvents extension to your wiki, you can follow these steps or you can reach out to User:Udehb-WMF for help.
- The text color for red links will be slightly changed later this week to improve their contrast in light mode. [5]
- View all 32 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, on multilingual wikis, users can now hide translations from the WhatLinksHere special page.
Updates for technical contributors
- XML data dumps have been temporarily paused whilst a bug is investigated. [6]

- Welcome! Creating a new article from scratch is extremely challenging, and new editors are strongly recommended to spend a few months learning how Wikipedia works, by making improvements to some of our existing seven million articles before trying it. When you do decide to have a go at a new article, you are highly encouraged to read WP:Your first article. If you haven't already also check out WP:TUTORIAL; it's a lot of fun! That said, when you want to have a go at writing an article, try Wikipedia:Requested articles/Arts and entertainment/Literature#Authors (poets, novelists and fiction writers) if you need a subject to write about; if you already have a subject in mind, just make sure they pass the general notability guidelines, so you don't waste your time. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:41, 7 November 2024 (UTC)

The Lockman Hole
[edit]I'm considering making an edit to the Lockman Hole article (Lockman Hole), after a brief mid-video interview with Jay Lockman himself where he voiced a preference for the name "Lockman Window".
I thought it might be a good courteous gesture of this community to change the beginning of the Lockman Hole article to read something more like "The Lockman Hole, or Lockman Window, is an area of the sky in which..."
Do you think this would be appropriate? Necessary Addition (talk) 20:00, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- I should add the source, timestamped: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWJBAGrG0ms&t=1474s Necessary Addition (talk) 22:06, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- Necessary Addition, it would at least be worth creating a redirect at Lockman Window (which I've just done). I'm not familiar with the subject, so I don't not how common the term is - if it's unlikely to be known to most people who know the topic, it's probably not worth including - but feel free to be bold and edit it yourself — Qwerfjkltalk 15:42, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of HH16 (disambiguation)
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on HH16 (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either
- disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
- disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
- is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:33, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:Incest in Greek mythology
[edit]Hi Qwerfjkl, earlier this year you closed the deletion discussion for Category:Incest in Greek mythology. [7] While I was the only editor in that discussion in favour of keeping the category, I don't think others really addressed my argument meaningfully, and I disagree with the category's deletion. I'm not really suggesting that you interpreted consensus incorrectly (I don't think you did), but rather that I don't think there was good reason for deletion. I was unsure whether WP:DELREV was the correct venue for this (as that seems to be for arguing that the closer misinterpreted consensus), so contacting you directly seemed logical. – Michael Aurel (talk) 01:28, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
- Michael Aurel, I think the best thing to do would be to start a discussion at WT:CFD and ping the participants to that discussion to see if you can work something out. — Qwerfjkltalk 07:54, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
- Ah ok, thanks, so there isn't an official process for this then. I might consult with the editor who created the category first, as since I left my initial comment here I've noticed that in the last month or two they created a similar but distinct category, Category:Mythological people involved in incest, but assuming they think it's necessary, I'll start a discussion at WT:CFD as you've recommended. – Michael Aurel (talk) 10:24, 12 November 2024 (UTC)

Updates for editors
- On wikis with the Translate extension enabled, users will notice that the FuzzyBot will now automatically create translated versions of categories used on translated pages. [8]
- View all 29 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, the submitted task to use the SecurePoll extension for English Wikipedia's special administrator election was resolved on time. [9]
Updates for technical contributors
- In
1.44.0-wmf-2
, the logic of Wikibase functiongetAllStatements
changed to behave likegetBestStatements
. Invoking the function now returns a copy of values which are immutable. [10] - Wikimedia REST API users, such as bot operators and tool maintainers, may be affected by ongoing upgrades. The API will be rerouting some page content endpoints from RESTbase to the newer MediaWiki REST API endpoints. The impacted endpoints include getting page/revision metadata and rendered HTML content. These changes will be available on testwiki later this week, with other projects to follow. This change should not affect existing functionality, but active users of the impacted endpoints should verify behavior on testwiki, and raise any concerns on the related Phabricator ticket.

Are you taking bot requests?
[edit]Hey Qwerfjkl, I hope you're well. I was wondering, are you taking bot requests at the moment? I was looking for someone to schedule a regular task, perhaps once a week, to add Template:WikiProject National Football League to relevant pages which don't have it yet. Every now and then I use AWB to do so, and I think it'd be a pretty straight forward and reasonable bot task. I run a recursive search against Category:National Football League players by team, skip talk pages which have "WikiProject National Football League", "NFLproject", "WikiProject NFL", "WPNFL", or "WP NFL", and then manually add the WikiProject template. Assessments typically come later and I wouldn't be asking the bot operator to try to code any of that in, as my primary goal to simply tag them as relevant to the WikiProject. Thankfully, based on Wikipedia:WikiProject National Football League/Assessment, we're pretty good about going back around and adding a rating (though importance not so much), which is why I don't think this task would be in vain. Entirely understandable if you're not interested in taking on another task, but I know you're great at what you do and I appreciate your work, so I thought I'd make this my first stop. - @Hey man im josh, I can probably get round to this on the weekend. Have you had a discussion on the wikiproject talk page? - That would make the brfa a bit easier. I do have some code for this left over from WP:PIQA that I could probably repurpose for this task.
If desirable, I could use ORES for article quality ratings, perhaps restricting it to stub assessments which it's pretty accurate at. — Qwerfjkltalk 21:08, 13 November 2024 (UTC)- No rush! I'll start a discussion at the WikiProject about it. I kind of didn't even think it'd be necessary but that's an ignorant thought on my part. Just because I do something manually sometimes doesn't mean there shouldn't be consensus that a bot can take over :P I think with ORES restricting to stub might be a great idea, so I'll include that when starting the discussion. - It's probably not strictly neccessary, but BRFA is perpetually backlogged, so it's nice to make BRFAs as clear-cut as possible. Qwerfjkltalk 21:29, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
