Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Sportspeople

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sportspeople. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sportspeople|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sportspeople. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

Having international caps for a country with no impact on the sport at large, is no longer a free pass with regards to notability. With a handful of caps and a very short club career, this would need substantial sources to meet WP:GNG and WP:SPORTCRIT. Geschichte (talk) 08:03, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A sample of mentions in The Times (there are more)- via Wikipedia Library including:
Cox, Rupert (18 April 1998). "Students grant initiative to White". The Times. No. 66179. p. 34. - Mentions Fulton as Captain of team and mentions possibly poor decision to insert opposition.
Bailey, Jack (17 April 1997). "Fulton and Scrini stage rescue mission". The Times. No. 65866. p. 56.
presumably other British Broadsheets (i.e. Telegraph and Guardian) will also have similar.
Also mentioned in Wisdens for 1998 and 1999 (1998 "James Fulton...made polished first class fifties" and that captaincy handed over to him for 1998) together with match reports.Nigel Ish (talk) 13:36, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

His professional career lasted only 50 mins and I can't find any suggestion of meeting WP:SPORTBASIC. The best source that I can find is Bibrka Gov, a local source that mentions him a few times in a match report. Match reports aren't generally seen as significant coverage. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 12:01, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Although the article is written in prose, most of the content is just regurgitating basic stats about the player (e.g. date of debut, number of appearances) so I would say it's fairly light coverage. As Clara says above, this is only one source and multiple sources are usually preferred. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 17:50, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is a routine transactional announcement and so fails GNG, and furthermore is straight from the governing football federation so is not independent. JoelleJay (talk) 18:30, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This article may look well sourced at first glance but, in actual fact, it's just a WP:REFBOMB of database sources, none of which confer any notability per WP:SPORTBASIC. His 8 matches in the third tier of Ukraine might provide a very weak presumption of notability but, ultimately, Shostka needs to have significant coverage from independent sources to have an article. Looking at Ukrainian Wikipedia and online, the best that I can find are Desna 1 and Desna 2, both of which are published by his then-employer so are neither independent nor reliable (see WP:RS and WP:IS). Please delete unless independent and significant coverage can be found for Shostka. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 11:44, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dermenov has had an unremarkable career to date and the article is currently nothing more than a stats stub. Blitz was the best source in my searches but it's only a match report for a match in which he received a red card. Other sources like Novsport and Gong are only trivial mentions. No indication of WP:SPORTBASIC. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 11:33, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

His soccer career was not notable at all, having only played 172 minutes in Revolution, as well as a friendly goal that can't be the basis of a Wikipedia article. I don't think the local news source cuts it GNG-wise, as it is an everyday piece of coverage with the majority being a Q&A interview. It would take much more making this meet WP:SPORTCRIT and WP:GNG. When one season in Singapore is all this player has done, notability is very questionable. Similar situation to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Major League Baseball career double plays as a right fielder leaders, which resulted in the lists by position being trimmed and merged to List of Major League Baseball career double plays leaders. The top 100 players at each position, split into their own articles, and then a list of other hall of famers at their positions and relevant stats, is more narrow a scope than is appropriate. All of these are basically copies of leader tables (link) from Baseball Reference. The top 100 players at each position, in their own lists, is excessive, and Wikipedia is not a database. Proposing that the relevant lists be trimmed and merged to their own sections at List of Major League Baseball career putouts leaders. Hey man im josh (talk) 20:34, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fails notability and significant coverage criteria. This is a tennis player who has never won a WTA Tour level title or even got close, never reached a Grand Slam tournament main draw and the few citations on the page are merely bog standard stat profiles. There is no significant coverage shown. I did PROD this but apparently that has been done before and challenged hence I'm going this route now. Shrug02 (talk) 21:15, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - In tennis, the criterion is that a player must have competed in the main draw of one of the top professional tournaments (WTA Tour tournaments (WTA Finals, WTA 1000, WTA 250 or WTA 250 events)) and have won at least one championship. Winning a WTA Challenger level tournament or any of the ITF W50, W75, or W100 tournaments starting in 2023 ($50,000+ between 2008 and 2022, $25,000+ between 1978 and 2007) or any WTA 125K tournament. This rule applies to both singles and doubles players. Player!!! As a result, this player meets the criteria.User:Vecihi91 12:08, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you know all this then why don't you add the content and citations to prove it? Even if what you say is the case (and I have no reason to say it isn't), then at the moment the article still lacks significant coverage references. Shrug02 (talk) 11:17, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Meeting WP:NTENNIS is only an indicator that significant coverage is likely to exist. You would still need to prove that WP:SIGCOV exists for the article to meet notability criteria. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 12:35, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@asilvering How much more thorough and clear does it need to be? After a week 4 people say it fails significant coverage and just 1 says "keep" but fails to back that opinion up by adding anything to an article which indeed clearly fails WP:SIGCOV. What is the point of the AFD process? I've had articles with far more citations deleted yet these tennis ones seem like the holy grail that must not be touched no matter how poorly sourced or non-notable they are. Prediction time - "keep due to no consnsus" will be the eventual outcome. Waste of time. Shrug02 (talk) 00:16, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Shrug02, we regularly relist discussions where opinion is divided and this was just a first relisting. It's more important to get this discussion closed right than quickly. What's the hurry? Liz Read! Talk! 23:51, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz I gave you my full answer on your talk page. All I will add here is that opinion is not divided. One editor is saying keep to all these tennis AFDs, even going as far as to unilaterally close one as "keep" while all other opinions are for delete. The aforementioned editor has opposed PROD and AFD without actually adding any significant coverage to any of the articles and just aggressively quotes tennis rules, votes multiple times and lists minor tournaments as justification for keep. So in conclusion there is no hurry, I am simply frustrated that one person is being allowed to filibuster the process when if you actually look at the articles in question they clearly fail to meet the required standard. Shrug02 (talk) 11:01, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete While Zelnickova won 1 W40 (now a W50) doubles tournament, WP:NTENNIS is a part of the global sports notability guideline and its FAQ at Wikipedia:Notability (sports)/FAQ says: "The topic-specific notability guidelines described on this page do not replace the general notability guideline". WP:GNG requires multiple independent, significant coverage in reliable sources. I don't see that, either in my searches or the article here. Everything that comes up can be categorized either as passing mentions in the scope of something else or just routine match recaps (mostly local coverage in Slovakian tournaments). Generally, it's very tough to get significant coverage based on just winning low-tier doubles tournaments in a predominantly singles sport - and this case (along with others nominated right now) proves it yet again. She might get there in the future, but as of right now, it's WP:TOOSOON. Jovanmilic97 (talk) 12:27, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is a 300+ word article on the then-second-best darts player in the world, as well as what appears to be a feature on 'Top of the World: Marshall James', count for notability? Of course it does. BeanieFan11 (talk) 21:41, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You keep describing him as being the "second-best darts player in the world" and this is just categorically not true. Are you seriously suggesting he was better than Phil Taylor? Two articles do not make significant coverage, especially when one of which you have admitted you have no idea what it even is. All my warmest wishes, ItsKesha (talk) 23:02, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You keep describing him as being the "second-best darts player in the world" and this is just categorically not true. – I'll admit I'm not super familiar with darts, but didn't James finish as the runner-up at the World Championships? Wouldn't being runner-up at the World Championships be second best in the world? And two articles can absolutely be significant coverage; the general notability guideline says that's all that's required for notability (two pieces of coverage). What do you think the odds are that a story titled, "Top of the World: Marshall James", is not significant coverage? BeanieFan11 (talk) 23:11, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
He finished runner-up at a (not the) World Championship and then proceeded to do absolutely nothing of note ever again. Does a darts player from Llanelli having potentially one article in a Llanelli newspaper, and a six paragraph article on a darts website, really count for notability? All my warmest wishes, ItsKesha (talk) 00:00, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Does having significant coverage from two independent outlets for a runner-up at a World Darts Championship count for notability? Absolutely if you go by GNG, which only requires two significant sources. BeanieFan11 (talk) 00:27, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So, to keep up-to-date. That's one "significant" source. And one source you freely admit you haven't read. All my warmest wishes, ItsKesha (talk) 00:37, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We're allowed to use common sense. The odds that both the 'Top of the World' source is insignificant and that there's no further coverage of him anywhere is incredibly small, especially given that Ser! has found paywalled articles in four additional newspapers. That you're unable to answer whether you've done any sort of WP:BEFORE search at all for over one hundred darts articles you've rapidly nominated or proposed for deletion is concerning as well. This is the entirety of the BNA article, content on James bolded:

[D]arts ace Marshall James added another trophy to his impressive collection recently - after winning a world championship. Marshall was a member of the Wales short man squad that won the world championship in Perth, Sydney, recently. Another player from the area Eric Burden was also in the side with the others being Sean Palfrey of Newport and Martin Phillips from North Wales. With 35 countries taking part Wales beat a star studded England side in final by nine legs to six. Wales came away with three gold medals and one bronze. Marshall lost in the semi-final of the Embassy Gold Cup singles on Saturday to world number 1 Mervin King 2-1. Another Welsh player Shaun [sic] Palfrey went on to take the title beating King 2-0 in the final. Marshall was recognized for his achievement this week when he was chosen as winner of the Walter Hughes Cup, one of the Brin Isaac Memorial Fund awards.

I'm not convinced ~4 sentences in an un-bylined hyper-local blurb announcing his darts competition results for that week counts toward GNG. JoelleJay (talk) 18:15, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral - My main concern here is that DartsNews is not obviously a reliable source and some work needs to be done to establish whether it is or isn't. My real sticking point on any bio article is "can we write a reliably-sourced encyclopaedia article, and not simply a database-entry, about the subject", and if Dartsnews is reliable then probably we can. BeanieFan11 - any views on this? FOARP (talk) 10:56, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • I really need to figure out how to get re-subscribed to the BNA; there appeared to be a decent bit of coverage there (highly likely enough to write a reliably-sourced encyclopaedia article, and not simply a database-entry, about the subject, I'd say)... As for Dartsnews, they appear to have an editing staff. BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:22, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Weak keep - Mostly just on AGF, give-keep-a-chance grounds. DartsNews gives sigcov but feels like a peripheral source even if it is a WP:NEWSORG. There is no BIO equivalent of WP:AUD and local coverage shouldn't be excluded entirely, so I see no reason to dismiss coverage just because it was in a Llanelli newspaper, but it is also borderline for WP:SIGCOV. The real question for me is "can we have an article that isn't just sports-stats", and we just about can. Since the internet archive is now working again (albeit slow) I did a little search there and I see that, except for mentioning him a couple of times when discussing other players, he isn't listed in this book about the top 50 darts players, so I think that safely answers the question of how great this guy was. unnotable darts player, fails GNG and WP:SPORTCRIT. All my warmest wishes, ItsKesha (talk) 18:12, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article fails WP:GNG. Simione001 (talk) 01:57, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Considering that information about these North Korean players is almost impossible, here at least we have something. I'm going to withdraw my vote, I don't know if it's enough for WP:SIGCOV, but let's expand the discussion. Svartner (talk) 00:18, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Of the four sources, only the first seems to be decent. Source #2 is primary, Source #3 is against WP:LINKSTOAVOID, while Source #4 is a brief mention in match report. None of them pass WP:GNG in my opinion. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Djalim ໒꒱˚。⋆ 16:07, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - @GiantSnowman:, @Svartner:, I found [19], [20], and [21] among other sources which is decent for a North Korena player. Definitelyy has offline North Korean sources too. One of few North Korean players to have played professionally for a few European clubsm and has 5 goals in 9 games for the national team. Article needs improvement, not deletion. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 08:56, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why do people often say good sources for a North Korean footballer like the bar is lower for some reason? The nationality of the player isn't relevant and then also speculating about the apparent existence of offline sources. Simione001 (talk) 20:53, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why do people often say good sources for a North Korean footballer like the bar is lower for some reason? – do you understand the situation of media in North Korea? Do you realize that they don't have real media? Why should they be treated with the same strictness as those from countries with extensive media? BeanieFan11 (talk) 22:30, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Simione001 I think you do a good job filtering these articles from North Korean players since the majority are in fact unable to be kept. But it is valid when something comes up to establish the minimum coverage. There is a little more tolerance throughout the context of the country's regime, where there is no independent media. Relisting comment: Relisting. Could we get an assessment of the recently found sources? Unfortunately, we have the same guidelines for notability regardless a subject's nationality. The rules can bent but that would involve you persuading other editor's to your assessment of suitability of the existing sources.

Ancestry.com and The Peak Seeker are not reliable. Highpointers.org is the official highpointing organization so should not be used here. The only seemingly reliable source here is The Oregonian. Unless more coverage can be found, I feel like Arthur H. Marshall's achievements are better discussed briefly in the highpointing article instead of in its own article as notability seems weak. The current state of the article is certainly not sufficient and is written poorly. KnowledgeIsPower9281 (talk) 15:22, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the in-depth coverage on him in the Oregonian, and multiple sources crediting him with the first in the US to reach all the tops and receiving coverage multiple times spanning years apart is an indication of notability and I feel he meets Wikipedia:SPORTSPERSON

Although I nominated the article for deletion, I think with some further improvements it can be kept with all these sources. KnowledgeIsPower9281 (talk) 22:33, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
