From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-nuk (bean, eye) (STEDT, Schuessler, 2007). Cognate with Proto-Lolo-Burmese *(s-)nok (bean) (whence Burmese ပဲနောက် (pai:nauk, bean), Lahu nɔ̂ʔ, etc.), Jingpho nòʔ.
