Etymology
[edit]From 振り (furi, “assigning”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of verb 振る (furu, “to assign, to stick on, to apportion”)) + 仮名 (kana).[1][2] The kana changes to gana as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
First cited to 1813.[1]
