Glyph origin

[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *rud) : semantic + phonetic (OC *b·lud).

Etymology

[edit]

Perhaps from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rus (bone); see there for more (Hill 2019). The original sense was "pitch pipe", and appears to have developed into the modern senses via semantic shift "pitch pipe" > "to supply a pitch" > "to tune, control" > "controlling principle" > "law".
