Particularly: “MED groups the "river" and "forbid" senses together, probably as rivers were obstacles that "forbade progress", though the senses probably should not be grouped together.

For the "river" sense, not given etymology by STEDT (mrac "river"). Luce adduces Old Chinese 瀰 (OC *niːlʔ, *mnel, *mnelʔ, “overflowing rich water”) as a cognate.[1] This is outdated, in light of later Old Chinese reconstructions. Bears stronger resemblance to 脈 (OC *mreːɡ, “vein”).

For the "forbid" sense, not given etymology by STEDT (mrac "impede, obstruct"), and Luce adduces no cognates.[2]”

Particularly: “MED groups the "root", "gizzard", and "great-grandchild" senses together, probably because all were conceived as "round stubby objects". It is unclear if these senses should be etymologically grouped together.

For the "root" sense, not given etymology by STEDT (amrac "root"). Luce gives Old Chinese 本 (OC *pɯːnʔ, “root, origin”) and Tibetan རྩད (rtsad, “root”) as cognates.[3] The Chinese comparison is problematic and outdated.

For the "gizzard" sense, STEDT does not mention it, while Luce gives Old Chinese 胃 (OC *ɢuds, “stomach”) and Tibetan གྲོད་པ (grod pa, “first stomach”) as cognates.[4] Neither is phonetically convincing.

For the "great-grandchild" sense, not given etymology by STEDT (mrac "great-grandchild"), while Luce tentatively compares Tibetan བརྒྱུད (brgyud, “to transmit; descendants”).[5]”
