[edit]From Proto-Mongolic *jaxan, from Common Turkic *yaŋan, perhaps related to Proto-Dravidian *yĀnay or Middle Chinese 象 (zɨɐŋX), from Old Chinese 象 (*ljaŋʔ).
Compare Middle Mongol ᠵᠠᠭᠠᠨ (ǰaɣan), East Yugur jaan hgor, Old Uyghur [script needed] (yaŋa), Western Yugur jaŋan, Tamil யானை (yāṉai), Thai ช้าง (cháang).
