[edit]Synchronically vertō + -īgō. Diachronically, may be derived from vertex, vertic-, with the velar assimilated in oblique cases to the nasal suffix derived from Proto-Indo-European *-h₃onh₂- (e.g. genitive *wertik-nes > *wertig-nes > vertīginis).
