Possibly a substratum word, akin to or derived from Albanian gjemb, or alternatively from Vulgar Latin *pungulus, from Latin pungō (compare Italian pungolo) through intermediate roots *punglu > *glumpu through metathesis > *ghiumpu > ghimp(u).[1]
