From Proto-Italic *flāwos, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰl̥h₁wós, from *bʰel- (light, bright, whence Russian бе́лый (bélyj), Sanskrit भर्ग (bharga), English blue) +‎ *-wós (whence Latin -vus). Cognate with Proto-Celtic *blāwos (yellow) and Proto-Germanic *blēwaz (blue).
