[edit]From Proto-West Germanic *buʀdō, from Proto-Germanic *buzdô (“beetle, grub, swelling”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰūs- (“to move quickly”). Cognate with Middle Low German buddech (“thick, swollen”), Low German budde (“louse, grub”), Old Norse budda (“purse”). See bug.
