[edit]Borrowed from Danish bil, a shortened form of automobil, ultimately from Ancient Greek αὐτός (autós, “self”), stem αὐτo- (auto-) + Latin mōbilis (“mobile”), ergo ‘[vehicle] which moves by itself’.
