[edit]From Ottoman Turkish نابلس (Nablus) and Arabic نَابُلُس (Nābulus), from Byzantine Greek Νεάπολις (Neápolis), from Ancient Greek νέᾱ́ (néā́, “new”) + πόλῐς (pólis, “city, city-state”). Doublet of Nabeul, Naples, Neapoli, and Neapolis.
