If you enjoy a lush green lawn but can't quite seem to get one, there are companies ready to help get rid of weeds, bare patches, and that strange fairy ring of mushrooms. Lawn subscription services can do all the work for you or deliver products for you to apply so you can claim all the credit. Learn more about the growing popularity of subscription-based models in lawn care and how you can find one that fits your needs.

Understanding Lawn Subscription Services

Lawn subscription services vary in the help they offer. However, all of the platforms offer a professional assessment of your lawn, a tailored selection of lawn care products, and automatic delivery or scheduling from your computer or phone.

Traditional lawn care companies, usually locally owned, offer lawn care ranging from turnkey full-service care, including weed and pest control, aeration, and fertilization, to basic mowing, edging, and leaf-blowing. Most require a homeowner to sign a contract for services.

Types of Lawn Subscription Services

DIY Lawn Care Subscription Boxes

If you enjoy taking care of your lawn but find all of the product choices confusing or can't remember when you should apply fertilizer or weed and pest control, a lawn care subscription plan that regularly sends lawn care products tailored to your lawn may be just what you need. Brands include Lowe's, Sunday, Lawnbright, Do My Own Turf Box, LawnServ, and Ace YardRx.

The programs use an online platform based on the consumer's address, specific problems, and lawn size to pinpoint and recommend the right products and application times to help the lawn thrive. According to Kevin Casey, one of the developers behind Ace YardRx, their subscription curates and delivers fertilizers, grass seed blends to repair bare spots, and weed and pest control products.

The costs vary depending on the size of your lawn and the type of products needed. However, a subscription plan bundle is usually less expensive than purchasing products individually.

Full-Service Lawn Care Subscriptions

While there are thousands of local full-service lawn care providers across the country, Wemow is the only lawn care subscription service that offers basic mowing plans to full-scale lawn services including fertilization and weed control. Using their app, you select the service you want, and Wemow selects a local lawn care company to provide the level and frequency of service you desire. Their program eliminates the need to find lawn care, uses automatic payment methods, and allows you to cancel appointments and services with no added fees.

The costs for full-service lawn care are based on the lawn size and the amount of maintenance needed. Simple mowing for a one-quarter acre yard costs $90 to $200 per month or $200 to $400 monthly for full service.

How Lawn Subscription Services Work

Before I wrote this article, I went online to understand the lawn subscription process from several companies. Every lawn subscription service begins with a visit to their website or app and entering your street address. You are then asked some questions about the condition of your lawn, make adjustments to the actual size of your lawn, and whether you have specific product requests.

Once you've answered all the questions, the company recommends a lawn care plan. The DIY subscriptions offer deliveries of selected products for spring, summer, and fall lawn care. A delivery window is provided and then it is up to you to apply the products using your equipment. For full-service subscriptions, you select a level and frequency of service and a service provider takes over maintenance of your lawn.

Pros of Lawn Subscription Services

  • Convenience: With DIY subscription services, there's no more heading to the garden center to wade through all the lawn care products to find the right ones. The products are delivered right to your door. Full-service subscriptions offer hands-off lawn care.
  • Customized Care: If you aren't having much success managing your lawn, a DIY product bundle selected by lawn care experts takes the guesswork out of what you need. The products are delivered at the right time with guidance on application. For full-service lawn care subscriptions, the providers are local lawn care companies that should know the specifics for your area.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Most DIY product bundles are less expensive than individual purchases and save money over traditional full-service lawn care services.

Cons of Lawn Subscription Services

  • Inaccurate Information: Remember the old saying: Garbage in, garbage out? If you don't enter your lawn's size and specifics accurately, you may end up with the wrong products or too much or too little of what you need.
  • Establishing a New Lawn: If you are trying to establish a new lawn, none of the subscription services provide the soil testing necessary to get your lawn off to a healthy start.
  • Read the Fine Print: Before you enroll in any lawn subscription service, make sure you understand delivery or service dates and return or cancellation policies.

How to Choose the Right Lawn Subscription Service

If you don't enjoy or have time for lawn care, then a full-service subscription is probably right for you. However, if you take pride in caring for your lawn, a DIY delivery of products saves time and is convenient to ensure you are using the right products at the right time.

While some DIY subscriptions save time and money, always compare prices. Remember, you won't save any money if you don't use the products. Other than the cost of equipment, maintenance from a full-service subscription is always more expensive than doing it yourself.

Always read the subscription parameters carefully. Are they flexible enough that you can make changes as needed? Is there a money-back guarantee? How simple is it to cancel the subscription? Is the service associated with a company you have used before and trust? Before signing up for any lawn care subscription or service, read online reviews and ask your neighbors about their experiences.
