Diversity Commitment
Nature Portfolio is committed to promoting practices that support diversity and inclusion in science communication and publishing. We recognise that there are many dimensions to diversity, including gender, race/ethnicity, geography and career stage.
As a guiding principle, we aim to foster equity, diversity and inclusion within our internal practices and in published content, embody these values in all our editorial activities and to support and promote these values in the research community.
Our current priorities in action on gender and diversity include:
1. Commissioned authors: Nature magazine and Nature Portfolio journals commit to increasing gender diversity among commissioned authors.
2. Peer reviewers: Nature Portfolio journals commit to increasing gender diversity in peer reviewer population. Journals that have Editorial Boards commit to working with their Editorial Board Members to raise awareness of our commitment to promoting gender diversity among peer reviewers
3. Editorial Board Members: Nature Portfolio journals that have Editorial Boards commit to increasing gender diversity among Editorial Board Members
4. Reporting: Nature commits to annual reporting on gender diversity among commissioned authors and peer reviewers.
5. Nature Conferences: commits to a “no men-only” policy for conference organizing committees, for speaker invitations, short poster presentations and for panels. Nature Conferences has developed a Code of Conduct and Diversity Policy which will form part of our contract with partners and others to help all meet the goals of the “no men-only” policy. Participants of a Nature Conference will be required to agree to abide by the Code of Conduct at registration. Nature Conferences commit to annual monitoring and reporting on progress against this commitments
6. Language and imagery: Nature magazine has developed and uses a language sensitivity guide - a resource of appropriate language to use when writing about topics such as ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, disability and health. Nature has developed guidelines for use in illustration and photography to ensure appropriately diverse representation in our pages.
Read more about how Nature Portfolio pledges to supporting our Gender Diversity Commitment in this Nature Editorial and on the Springboard blog.
We are currently developing our commitment on other aspects of diversity, prioritising ethnic and racial diversity.
