The Shadow Line (2011)
Hmm
Personally I don't get what was so great about this. Maybe it just went over my head. It seemed like the build up to the mystery was very long-winded and when we finally found out what it was, it was explained within 2 minutes. I found the way everyone talked was very odd...like no one talks in proper sentences and they all just know what the other person is implying. Everyone seems very disinterested. I thought it started off pretty interestingly especially when it kept switching from the criminals to the police mid-sentence but my interest faded pretty quickly. I can't help but also remember that the main actor was in Tenet-another movie that was overly confusing!
Hollywood (2020)
Captivating and at time heartbreaking
I was so taken in by the first episode and finished it within 2 days! It is so polished and glamorous which is the gloss of old Hollywood. However beneath the gloss is the real lives of real people each with their own story and heartbreak. I was very moved by some of the scenes where the characters said they couldn't be who they really were.
I was introduced to some new actors but everyone did such a great job. I always love seeing Dylan McDermott and I loved where his character ended up.
The whole feel of this reminded me of Smash and also Why Women Kill.
I'd love to see this series as an anthology...which is becoming a bit of a trend. Would love to see these same actors play other roles.
Citizen X (1995)
Wow
I am always interested in stories about serial killers but not all of them are that good. This one is terrific. Thanks to @gogoschka-1 for recommending this one on his list of best movies. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have come across it.
A very impressive cast and fantastic acting. The pace is perfect. There is never a dull moment. I felt the same fascination and frustration while watching the Chernobyl series. It is fascinating that pride comes before common sense and doing the right thing. It is also very interesting to see the effects and changes that happen after the collapse of Communism.
I did read up a little bit about the real events and it seems that there were a few changes...notably the last victim was not a child in real life.
Slasher (2016)
Enjoyed 2 seasons so far
I just finished season 2. I like that it's an anthology series much like American Horror Story where it finishes a story with each season.
I like that there is a couple of repeat actors playing different characters but it would have been even more fun to have them all come back!
I enjoyed S1 as it had that classic Halloween feel. I did suspect the killer from about ep 5. I also noticed something weird when in the final episode Sarah compares sees a sketch Cam did as a teen and compares it with a sketch found in the killer's lair and the first picture suddenly changed?!
S2 was a classic summer camp setting which I thought was going to be super cheesy but then it turned out to be something different. I spotted that Wren was probably not real from episode 3 and had dejavu with the Sixth Sense. From then on I kept trying to tell if anyone was talking directly to him. So then I knew that it probably had to be Judith but I couldn't figure out why. And also what was the twisted bit about her fictional lover being her son's 'ghost'? I guess they had to make it that way otherwise we would guess too soon!
Looking forward to binging S3.
Contagion (2011)
Rewatched after recent coronavirus outbreak
I wanted to see this again due to the recent events.
It is quite uncanny actually. If only they reacted this quickly in real life though!
It really shows how easily the virus spreads so quickly- pretty scary.
It is hard to believe that so many people died with the Spanish flu -70million?! That's crazy!
Now it's time rewatch all the other virus movies like 28 Days Later, Outbreak, World War Z!
6 Underground (2019)
It's a hard slog
I finished this movie in 6 sittings...it was rather painful. A lot happening but not enough to hold my attention. It looked like it should have been cool but it never quite got there for me.
Black and Blue (2019)
Surprised at low rating
15 mins in and I knew this was going to be a great movie. It is non-stop and doesn't let up. It reminds me very much of 16 Blocks in the way of action and tension. I really enjoyed it. I found the ending emotional! I wish there was a bit more about what justice was served to the corrupt cops though...
Shed of the Dead (2019)
Good fun!
Has lots of good moments and is a decent zombie comedy.
I loved the bit with the cowboy serial killer talking about what was in his bags, "if you soak them in vinegar long enough, just like calamari" and when he said "dead dead". Also the end music really reminded me of Paul Simon?!
Geukhanjikeob (2019)
Ocean's 11 Korean style
This movie has plenty of twists and turns...and does not disappoint.
I suspected a lot of things halfway through because I've come to expect it of these types of movies but I still enjoyed it.
What's more interesting is the actors that I keep seeing pop up in varying roles. For instance I'd just seen one of the actors as a very chillingly convincing serial killer and another as a contract killer/cop and both were very different in this film. Love the variety!
Overall this movie has a good mix of comedy, mystery, drama and suspense.
Chugyeokja (2008)
wow
One of those movies you can't forget. The acting is excruciatingly realistic. You feel the desperation and anguish of the main character. This is why the ending is so painful and shocking. Expect the unexpected!
La ragazza nella nebbia (2017)
Very engrossing!
I found this so engrossing and intriguing. I was so scared that something bad would happen to the teacher...he might kill himself or someone would do something horrible to him or his family.
Then there are so many twists that it starts getting weird and so confusing...but it's still so engrossing.
The part where they find cat hairs in the teacher's car...I thought that was already pretty conclusive that he did it since Vogel says the killer used the cat to lure Anna. But then he says once they find the cat they find the killer...so that threw me off. So it sounded like he was saying the teacher wasn't a suspect. Hmm.
Anyway...later, when the psychiatrist talks about only catching one type of fish and they are trout (orange flesh?!) it is pretty clear he was 'the fog man'.
So basically the teacher killed Anna to get his fame and fortune by copying 'the fog man' murders. The psychiatrist is 'the fog man' however he's pretty much retired. Or so we hope...since he goes back to his 'trophy' box to relive his past crimes. Who knows. that might set him off again!
What I didn't like was that it seemed like Vogel knew it was the psychiatrist who was the fog man, but then doesn't do anything about it. At least say something? But I suppose they are all cold cases since the last one was 30 years ago.
All in all I enjoyed this a lot!
Jack Ryan (2018)
Catch-22
Although this series is highly entertaining I feel an overwhelming sadness watching it. I can't help feeling like the show is depicting an endless cycle of tragedy and revenge. An orphan blows up a helicopter full of American soldiers...why was he an orphan? His family was probably killed by American warfare and so his hate grew to such an extent that he took matters into his own hands.
Getting a glimpse of both sides is very interesting and necessary. A very intelligent series.
Journal 64 (2018)
Love this movie series!
I was so impressed with the first movie and it has always been an impatient wait until the next instalment. I just love how the Danish can come up with such quirky characters. Sometimes the character put you off because they are so different but as time goes by you grow to love them and it is amazing how the subtle acting can convey so many emotions if you look out for them.
I would be very sad if this was the last we see of these quirky characters.
I just hope there will not be an English language version remake!!!
Pengabdi Setan (2017)
Dejavu
I am partway through this movie and already I'm feeling like it's very similar to Hereditary...Was Hereditary based on this movie?!
The Last Samurai (2003)
Jolly good
Being Japanese myself I was quite intrigued with this movie. I was also impressed with Tom cruise's Japanese :)
It's always sad seeing movies about the changing times and tactics of war, from honourable one-on-one combat to indiscriminate impersonal machine gun warfare. All in all a great film that will have you hooked.
Funny aside: my bro-in-law asked me what the inscription on the samurai sword said (near the end of the movie) and I replied, "jolly good". Then we cracked up laughing. And then my husband said "does it really?" which made us laugh even more. It was some good comic relief considering the impending doom that was to follow!
Srpski film (2010)
Deeply disturbing
I saw this quite a few years ago and still think this is the most disturbing movie I've ever seen. I indulge in gore horror and enjoy fantastical macabre films such as Hostel, Saw, Frontiers, Come Back to Me etc. There is still a sense of 'fantasy' and very black humour in such movies...ie they are entertainment.
However this one...still makes my skin crawl. I don't know if that is a sign of a good 'horror' or not...the fact that I can still remember so much of it. Honestly I wish I couldn't. I wish there was a delete button in my brain so I can erase everything about this movie!
Upgrade (2018)
Wow!
It's best to go in without any expectations like I did. I really enjoyed this gem.
I was also pleasantly surprised to find out it was written Leigh Whannel...remember Saw? (Absolutely loved the first movie) For this reason there are a lot of Aussie actors.
The story is fresh and exciting. There are unexpected laughs and some innovative filming techniques. Apparently this was a low budget movie but it doesn't really feel like it. Just goes to show that a great story is more important than the best special effects. (One key example that comes to mind is 12 Angry Men-if you haven't seen this, you definitely should!)
I-ut saram (2012)
Unexpectedly touching movie
Thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Lots of interesting characters and intertwining stories. Ultimately I found the relationship with the mother and stepdaughter so tragic and touching and this is what I liked most about this story. Tragically true feelings and communication happens after the death. So sad :(
On another note my favourite character was the mafia guy who for all his seemingly scary aura does not actually really hurt anyone and I loved his comical interaction with the mum at the end.
Deo pa-i-beu (2013)
Suspenseful, gripping, emotional. Spoilers! Read after watching!
I don't understand the low review...I thought this was an excellent movie.
Some clever plot twists as is the usual with a lot of Korean films in this genre.
I was expecting another twist at the end which didn't happen but would have been interesting. (It would have been interesting if they decided to use the killer's organs instead...but I guess that's me overthinking things!)
I also wanted to see what happened to 'glass eyes' organ transplant recipient...
Plus...a more drawn out punishment for the killer would have been more satisfying!
Black Mirror (2011)
Must watch. Binge-worthy.
I can't stress how good this series is. From the very first episode it just hooks you. Every episode is different which is brilliant. You will never get bored. This series makes you assess the world around you. A lot of what is depicted is happening now and you can imagine some of the other stories coming true eventually. I have seen all the episodes including 2018 and I just hope they will continue to make more.
Ekusute (2007)
Bit of a black comedy/horror
I loved the crazy performances here. I saw this movie many years ago and still remember how bizarre it was. The one scene that stuck with me was the hairdresser and her scissors... I am actually doing a search on Korean horror movies to watch at the moment and came across one called Wig/Scary Hair. (2005)..and the plot sounds very similar so I am guessing this Japanese one was inspired by the Korean one! If anyone has seen both, which one was done better?
