The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
Not for everyone, but definitely for me
This movie is fantastic in every single way. Each performance is excellent, which is impressive, since half of the main cast consists of young children. The Witch kept my attention throughout the entire runtime; I was not bored once. However, I can understand why some people were bored by this movie. I found the religious paranoia fascinating- the movie takes place during the Salem Witch Trials. I wouldn't call this a horror movie; it fits more in the thriller category. However, it is very unsettling, with one scene in particular that made me quite uncomfortable. I don't want to spoil anything so as not to ruin your experience with this masterpiece, so I will leave it at this- if you're looking for a typical horror movie, don't watch The Witch. If you're a cinephile looking for a great horror/thriller, I could not recommend it more.
The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan (2019)
Yes, compare it to Until Dawn.
Everybody seems to think that comparing this game to Until Dawn is unfair because of how much better UD is. It is a perfectly fine comparison, since it's coming from the same company, and just reskins the mechanics from UD. That would be fine, but unfortunately, this game sucks. Very awkward dialogue, interesting plot but extremely rushed story, mostly unlikeable characters, and an ending so rushed that I thought it was one of the characters having another hallucination at first. Man of Medan is also the least scary and tense horror game I have ever played. The game has no stakes. You figure out what's going on really early in the game. I'm not calling myself smart or anything, but the mystery seemed very obvious if you just payed attention to your surroundings and look at clues. Part of Until Dawn's greatness was the scary atmosphere, and this game does not do a good job at creating one. I never felt scared once because I knew what the monster was. And the jump scares were pretty lame. Until Dawn didn't keep me up at night or anything, but it had a lot of pretty good jump scares that got me, and didn't feel cheap and forced. This game has a few jump scares, all of which minus one or two didn't get me, and feel very cheap and forced. The QuickTime events in this game were annoying, too- I'm Until Dawn they were used to make the movie you were watching more tense, as you watch these characters fight for their lives, and you know that if you mess up a button press, you die. I only had one character die in MoM, and it came out of nowhere. Brad just ran at Fliss with a wrench and hit her in the head with it. This was the only QTE I can think of in the game that decided a character's fate, or at least it felt that way. All of these elements work together to create the worst "telltale style" game I have played, and the least scary horror game I have played. Man of Medan needs to be compared to UD because of how lazy it is. It is 3-4 hours long, which is way too short. All of these Dark Pictures games cost $30, and while I have payed more for short games like The Lost Legacy or Miles Morales, those are actual good games with effort put into them. This game is not worth the launch price. Fortunately, I waited for two years and payed $10 for it, which I still feel was too much. I didn't hate everything in this game- like I said, the idea of having an until dawn successor but the monsters are just hallucinations is interesting. I liked Fliss and Conrad, everyone else was insufferable. The awful dialogue does make for some pretty funny moments. I just cannot understand how people like this game. There are far better "choose your own adventure" games- Until Dawn, The Walking Dead, Detroit Become Human, Life Is Strange, and The Wolf Among Us, to name a few. I have heard that the other Dark Pictures games are better and longer, so I will give them a shot since they're pretty cheap. I am also excited for The Quarry since it looks like a true Until Dawn successor. I would not recommend this game- the only reason I would tell you to play this game is if you wanted to play the whole series.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017)
Close to perfection
First, let me start by saying that I'm probably a little biased since I'm a huge resident evil fan. I love most of them, and at least like the bad ones to an extent. And this is definitely one of the best of them. The fan base is generally split between liking the more scary, tougher games and liking the dumber, action packed games. I love both types of RE, and my top 3 RE games would be 4, 2 Remake, and 7. Biohazard is a great return to form for the fans of more horror based RE games. There are some good jump scares, the enemies are really tough, and the game is very hard at certain points, in a good way. The game has a really good and creepy atmosphere, as you explore this mold-filled, disgusting house in Louisiana with crazy rednecks constantly chasing you throughout the game. It makes exploration very tense, and RE games are at their best when there's a big, invincible enemy chasing you throughout the map while you explore. Everything in the Baker house is pretty much perfect as far as I'm concerned. As per usual with an RE game, the map starts to open up more and more as you explore, and there are always plenty of secrets to discover that make the game a lot easier. All of the sections in the Baker house are amazing- the main house with Jack, the secondary house with Marguerite, and the barn with Lucas. Lucas is definitely my favorite section, as going through the level itself has the best enemy challenge in the game, and the escape room is by far my favorite part of the entire game. It's such an interesting and obtuse puzzle, and solving it makes you feel very smart. One of if not my favorite puzzle in any video game. Jack's section in the main house is definitely the scariest part of the game, with the opening Mia scene, and Jack stalking you throughout the whole section. Marguerite's area is very good as well, and has the best boss fight in the game, and one of the best RE boss fights in general. Everything in the game up to a specific point is almost perfect. I was ready to call the game a 9.5/10. But then, they continued the Resident Evil tradition of introducing an area in the last third-fourth of the game that is completely different both stylistically and gameplay wise, changing the entire theme of the game. Nest in RE 2 and 3, the island in RE4, the factory in Village, et cetera. The boat section is honestly really bad. The section where you play as Mia in the flashback is decent, as it explains a lot of the story, but when you get back to playing as Ethan, it just goes on way too long, when it really doesn't need to be. They could've had all of the boat restricted to a tape, like Mia's boat section already is, and Ethan could've accessed it through one of the TVs at the baker house. He makes his way back to the house at the end, anyways, and I really wish they had just skipped Ethan's part of the boat. The mine section is bad as well. It's just boring. The extra 20-30 minutes you spend in the mine is completely unnecessary. The not a hero DLC is really good, because it's short and hard, and actually spends some time making the mine an interesting area to explore, and gives it a reason to exist (Lucas used it as a hideout). They should've cut out Ethan's boat section and the cave, used the cave area specifically in Chris's Not a Hero DLC, and just fast forwarded to the end after Mia's boat tape. This would have kept my interest, as the last hour or two of the game really lost it. The only other thing I would criticize about the game is its replay value- RE games are made to be somewhat short and very replayable. While this one is around the same length as other RE titles, I would argue that it is not nearly as replayable. Although I love it, something about the game just makes me not want to replay it as much. Right after I beat Village, I instantly started new game plus, and enjoyed it, but I don't really want to play Biohazard again, although I prefer it to Village. Although I have my problems, the everything else about the game is amazing, and it (mostly) overshadows the bad parts. The game has a pretty good story as well, at least compared to other RE stories. It has a more interesting plot and virus than most games in the series, and it kept me hooked. With amazing villains, great gameplay, a good difficulty balance, and fantastic atmosphere, this game is incredible until the last hour and a half. If the game did my idea of skipping Ethan's boat section and the mine, it would get my original score of 9.5 out of 10, but the boat and mine bring it down to an 8 for me. Still definitely worth playing for RE fans or just fans of horror games in general, and I still love it a lot, I just wish I could've loved it a bit more.
28 Days Later (2002)
One of the worst movies I have ever seen
I was promised an exciting, scary, violent, and amazing movie. Unfortunately, I ended up wasting two hours of my life on one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Everything about this movie is terrible, except for one scene. That scene is the shot where Jim is walking around empty London, it's a very neat scene. Unfortunately, the movie decides to ruin that as well by bursting your eardrums with insanely loud music- the movie really likes to do this. The acting is awful, as none of the actors are able to deliver a remotely good performance. The movie looks very cheap- the entire film looms grainy. The movie has an interesting premise- the coma is the only well executed part of the movie, but the fast and smart zombies(?) are ridiculous. The action scenes are hard to watch. There are so many cuts that you cannot tell what is happening. The story makes no sense at all. I really don't want to go into it, it's so ridiculous. The way the virus spreads makes no sense. The infected are not scary or creepy in the slightest. One scene I laughed particularly hard at was after the characters escaped London, they found a grocery store (completely untouched) and it played a shopping montage reminiscent of a rom-com. In conclusion, this movie is absolutely terrible. I cannot understand how anybody would get any enjoyment out of this. I have no idea why there are any scores higher than a 2/10. Do not watch this movie.
Black Widow (2021)
Not amazing, but better than I expected.
I had a lot of fun seeing this in the theater, it's the first time I've been to the theater in a long time (besides A Quiet Place 2) and they were both the perfect movies to start going back to the theater with. It was neat seeing the marvel intro on the big screen again, and just being in the theater in general, so maybe this affected my experience a bit.
I thought the movie was honestly pretty good. The action scenes were neat and I liked the characters, especially Yelena. Florence Pugh did an amazing job. While I would have liked a bit more of Red Guardian, I felt the characters worked together very well, and made the movie more enjoyable. I liked the villain a lot and how they didn't show him until the end of the movie. However, one very disappointing part was Taskmaster- they played her up in the trailer a lot, and then she ended up barely being in it.
All in all, I had so much fun with the movie, and thought it had a pretty good story, and fun action scenes. I would definitely recommend seeing it.
Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
The hardest I've laughed in a long time
This movie is hilarious. Seriously. Kong turns into Kratos. Mechagodzilla is just something out of Terminator: Salvation. Godzilla is still boring. Whatever. But this movie is so funny. I see it get praise for the 'epic' combat despite the incredibly lackluster story, and I wholeheartedly disagree. The action was stupid an laughable, and so was the story and the characters. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Well, I guess it is, but not in this case. I laughed so hard so many times at this movie. The dialogue, story events, and action are all so stupid. The problem with the 2014 Godzilla and King of the Monsters is that they're just so boring. Action is incredibly slow-paced and stories are incredibly bland. They're both bad movies. But Kong: Skull Island is a lot of fun, because the characters and story are somewhat interesting, and the combat is entertaining and done well. It is not in this movie. Kong has an axe that Godzilla shoots his laser beam of death at to charge up. Oh my god. Mechagodzilla still isn't cool, and never will be. And I think the problem with these movies is that Godzilla just isn't cool. He's so slow and boring to watch. Kong isn't necessarily cool either, but at least it's entertaining. The fight scenes in this movie are so bad. And they really want to remind you that Millie Bobby Brown is indeed in the movie. At least in the last one, she had something to do. She's just... here now. Honestly, this movie kind of sucks, but it is definitely worth a watch.
WandaVision (2021)
Had potential to be great
Ok, I really loved the first three episodes, because they were different. It wasn't the typical marvel formula (which isn't a bad thing) of just action and fake science talk. It was a bit creepy at times, and was genuinely enjoyable to watch. Of course, those are the episodes people criticized for being 'boring', and using sitcom tropes. Well, the point of those episodes is that they were using sitcom tropes and putting a twist on it. You did watch it, didn't you? Anyways, after that, we start to see the typical MCU stuff, just without the action, so we just get fake science talk. I do like Jimmy Woo, though. Both of the villains are bad, especially the one that worked for S.W.O.R.D. (I can't even remember his name), so much fake science talk, and a lot of time spent outside the sitcom style. The sitcom style bits were really fun, that's why the first three episodes were so great. Also, the action in this show wasn't needed. I really didn't want this show to have a big action packed climax, but who am I kidding? It's a Marvel show. All in all, first three episodes 8/10, rest of it 5/10, I'd say that averages to about a 6/10 overall.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
A complete mess. Disappointing beyond measure
This movie is the second worst DCEU movie. Suicide Squad gets a 0/10. They really pushed the 80's theme in the trailers and marketing. It's even in the name of the movie. I can remember two scenes that actually fit that theme. This movie is incredibly boring. It's about two and a half hours, which is about 45 minutes too long. The story is so hard to follow, I had absolutely no idea what was going on for half of the movie. The entirety of the plot was awful, and didn't make sense. The action scenes were poorly choreographed and embarrassing. DC movies are often given credit for good fight scenes, but the only two in this movie were dreadful. Do NOT watch this movie, even if it's free with your HBO Max subscription.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020)
I wanted more.
I won't spoil anything, but I would wait until this goes on sale for 20-30 dollars. I got the platinum in a day. Not worth fifty dollars. The story is a big mess, and is predictable, short, and very cringy at times. However, the gameplay is better than before. Combat is more fun with the addition of venom and camouflage, and swinging just feels way better. This would be a 6/10 if the gameplay didn't feel this good. If you liked the first game, you'll like this one fine. If you think it looks fun, than it will be to you. Personally, the 2018 Spider-Man is in my top 3 games ever, and I was just expecting more from Insomniac. Good, but not great. Wait until it's on sale.
