Horror in the High Desert 3: Firewatch (2024)
Another chilling entry!
The way in which this series has transcended from a horror to thriller to mystery and back again while weaving its own distinct style, full of rich characters, has my full attention. I will be seated for every entry to come. I have just come from reddit where the theories on what is taking placing within the narrative are rampant and it's difficult to not rack my brain coming up with my own. The wait for this one to come out had people in a fervor, the kind of attention and following that money can't buy these days so I hope Merich and his team don't sell out to Hollywood execs and make the franchise paint-by-numbers schlock. Eagerly awaiting Part 4.
Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva (2023)
"I don't think those are people"
The images that this movie conjured in my own mind actually gave me nightmares. When the woman tells her story and says that she overheard her father saying to her mother at night while the were looking out the window at strangers on their ranch "I DON'T THINK THOSE ARE PEOPLE" I got literal goosebumps and I don't think that has ever happened. The way in which these movies show just enough without showing too much is brilliant. It doesn't seem to work for everyone judging by some of the other reviews on here but for the rest of us this stuff haunts my sleep. I do wish they would have shown the woman telling those stories but maybe that is part of the next one.
Zhou (2022)
long and over baked
I was really excited to see this. Maybe I'm not the smartest but the back and forth between present and past was confusing and got really old. It's also not all found footage. I've been on a found footage kick and this was feels too polished to be scary, if that makes any kind of sense.
Leaving D.C. (2012)
This movie deserves all the praise. Bad reviews are from angry filmmakers
It's obvious that the bad reviews on this one are from people who are also trying to make this kind of blair with style movie. Give it a rest. The man made an entertaining independent movie, get off your soap box. It gets talked about every so often in a facebook group I'm part of so I finally gave it a shot. I had to rent it for a dollar, which I didn't mind. I was impressed enough that it made me finally leave a review on here! I wasn't expecting it to be a one man show, but the dude is entertaining! The added bit of the OCD thing and him medicating was very authentic and made me wonder if his medication was responsible for some parts. I wish the cat head had been more explained. My only gripe is the ending, it was somewhat of a letdown after all of that buildup and intrigue. Awesome job for a one man band though. I'd like to see more from this guy.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Midnight Monologes
Talking talking talking talking talking. While I do love a nice cerebral, intellectual piece of work, this felt like a therapy session every episode. TBC I didn't dislike it, I actually really liked it, I just wanted more tension and at least a little bit of foreboding. The pale red head woman was very irritating. The main guy, the recovering alchi, was excellent as was the Sherriff.
No One Gets Out Alive (2021)
Whats with the distracting awful color saturation?
I'm no expert here but what was with that horrendous color saturation? So many scenes were SO BLUE that it took me out of the movie....it looked like a music video. Other than that, I enjoyed the main lead. I feel that things didn't really pick up until her co worker steals from her though, then it started to get interesting. Her situation was very depressing and made me fell for her, but more should have been done with that. Randomly showing a glowing eyed figure every once in a while does not create tension. I expected more from all the hype.
Candyman (2021)
missed opportunity
I was let down and underwhelmed with this movie. After all of the hype, it really fell flat. Not using Virginia Madsen? So many things could've been done here. It felt rushed and very, very independent.
