a very dramatic drama
21 January 2024
Very different from greys anatomy, which is what makes it good. The storylines are VERY interesting, there is some humor, a lot of drama, and tons of emotion. Like many other television shows, like greys, there a few inconsistencies that might ruin some aspects of characters, but not enough to ruin the magic.

Some storylines are very disturbing. I won't give away anything specific, but season 2 and 4 have especially traumatic events happen to the characters.

The characters are fairly unique and likable. The show addresses nuances of opinions fairly well, without necessarily siding with one, which i appreciate.

Watch this show - whether or not you've watched greys anatomy. It's very good.

The Act (2019)

good show

Warning: Spoilers
The true story this show is based on is extremely bone-chilling. The re-telling of the story put together by the talented cast, editing, structure, and sets does an effective job at conveying a sense of discomfort in the audience.

*extremely small spoilers* if you are not already familiar with the story of gypsy rose, it involves a young girl's involvement in the murder her mother who imposed on her years of abuse; most prominently medical and physical. I would hardly consider this a spoiler as the murder is revealed in the very first scene and specific details pour out gradually through several flashbacks.

I wouldn't recommend watching this show unless you have a tolerance to topics many might find disturbing, such as murder, gory, abuse, etc. I personally found it equally enjoyably and horrifying. It certainly provoked a series of thoughts involving the extent of mental impairment that can be experienced and how that influences the choices made and reality experienced.

great show!

Such a funny and interesting show. There is exceptional diversity within the characters. The characters are well thought out and possess individual comedic charms. The show has a sense of originality and togetherness.

My only problem has to do with later seasons. The characters fall apart a bit after season 6 and the very last season is very blatantly political and somewhat dry.

Besides that, each actor is talented in their own way. This show is unproblematic while still maintaining its good sense of humor. The work environment this show is set in allows for very interesting episodes; including life and death situations which allow for important conversations to be had. Watch this show, very funny wholesome and entertaining.

Captivating, simply perfect

This show holds a special place in my heart. It follows the journey of six individuals who find themselves in several odd environments - including "heaven", which is the main premise of the show. From the very first scene, you are hooked. From then, its plot twist after plot twist. Upon finishing one episode, you will find yourself inclined to watch the rest. Kristen Bell is magnificent in portraying the protagonist's development throughout the series. She shows the nuance of the human experience; how a person could be labeled as bad while being inclined to improve. The show is weirdly very deep and philosophical; but not in a way that might cause any discomfort or paralyzing existential crisis in its general audience. The Good Place teaches important lessons that can be viewed by children and adults alike - thanks to the clever cursing censorship! I believe everyone should watch this show, there's a lot people can learn from it. The ending is extremely satisfying and emotional. Watch this show!

Cô Gái Kỳ Quặc (2011–2018)

one of my comfort shows

Warning: Spoilers
New Girl is the type of show that is structured in such a unique way that makes it so undeniably easy to get attached to the characters and storylines. The cast is EXCEPTIONAL. Each character is equally hilarious and delightful in a completely unique and original way. The actors are unbelievably talented, so much I cannot pin-point who portrays their character the best. The main love story is executed amazingly, but is stretched out just a bit too much, in my opinion. The actors/characters have palpable chemistry which makes the show feel that much more real. Obviously not every episode is a winner, but even the worser ones have their moments of delight.

Seasons 1-4 are my personal favorites. It gets a bit weird after that, but still funny. Do yourself a favor and watch this show!

Parks and Recreation (2009–2015)
9/10
a comfort show

I truly enjoy light-hearted comedies that allow you to form connections to characters. This show does just that. ALL main characters are extremely likeable and unique in their charm. The running gags are maintained throughout the years very well - like the one about Jerry's name lol. Leslie Knope - the protagonist - is most certainly flawed, but also painfully sweet and kind. All characters have very evident flaws, like any real human, but present themselves amiably. Some people might say this show is too similar to "the Office". I strongly disagree. Perhaps, the FIRST season resembles it a bit too much, but Parks and Rec soon develops itself as its own show. I personally enjoy this show over the Office, if anything. I enjoy the Office, but it feels a bit more pessimistic to me, whereas Parks and Recreation leans slightly in a more wholesome direction while still maintaining its humor - which I appreciate.

If you enjoy comedy television shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the Office, New Girl, Modern Family, etc., watch this show. You won't regret it. It is LITERALLY one of my favorite shows. :)

Self Reliance (2023)

good movie - but something is missing
14 January 2024
I enjoyed watching this movie. The premise of the main plot was very intriguing and I enjoyed watching it develop. The cast was exceptional and conveyed their emotions in a very real way. Jake Johnson - the protagonist and creator of the film - is hilarious and obviously Andy Samberg is as well. Anna Kendrick, unsurprisingly, played her character practically flawlessly. The same is true for basically all of the other actors involved. My main critique concerns the structure of the movie. I feel the movie was cut a bit too short. The introduction could have been stretched out a bit more and the ending could have been more thoroughly explored. I liked how the reality of the situation was left a bit open to interpretation, but it did result in an uneasy and perhaps unsettling ending, in my opinion. I think I - like other viewers possibly - was expecting some sort of "plot twist" or major reveal. It felt a bit empty without a significant climax moment. Overall, I enjoyed the movie. I laughed and found myself at the end of my seat throughout the entirety of the film. It was mainly the ending that left me feeling as if something was missing.

I recommend this movie to anyone who might enjoy a mild thriller with comedic aspects. It was a nice watch, just a bit odd. Decently thought-provoking as well, which I appreciated.
