American Psycho II: All American Girl (2002)
I no longer have any will to live.
This movie is the worst thing I have ever seen in my life. I want to die. I don't expect everyone to like, or even understand, the original American Psycho, but reading these comments has ruined my faith in humanity. It's drivel, pure and simple. The tagline alone, "Angrier. Deadlier. Sexier." is just terrible. The world would be a better place if this movie had never been made.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
spectacular
The absolute best movie of the year, stunning both visually and emotionally. The scenes in Moria and of the Argonath are breathtaking. I can't believe I have to wait another year to see the next installment.
One disagreement on interpretation though: Galadriel and Lothlorien were *so* much darker than in the books. I did not get the impression that Lothlorien was a place the Fellowship would not want to leave and Galadriel was very ambiguous. Also, I just can't make myself like Liv Tyler.
But beyond this, a wonderful and thrilling adventure. Can't wait to see the Ents! Oh, and to the guy with the really long comment on the combined details page: Girls do NOT need a romance to make us sit through a movie. We just need an Aragorn ;) kidding!
Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995)
It's sad that this is so true...
The people that said this movie was not realistic must not have gone to junior high. This movie was so good, but so hard to watch. I wanted to climb into the movie, put my arm around Dawn and teach her the crappy-yet-vital rules to junior high. I wanted to slap Missy and GOD did I want Dawn to do something, ANYTHING than just take what was given to her. I hated that mom so much and it makes me so sad because I know that this happens to young girls and boys everywhere. The ending, however frustrating, is very real. No Hollywoodizing here, and this movie is so much better for it.
The ButterCream Gang (1992)
an exquisite piece of filmmaking
It had been awhile since I'd seen "The Buttercream Gang". Years, really; years in which I hoped that I'd be able to view the film again. Last night my wish came true: "The Buttercream Gang" was on the Hallmark channel. It really takes two viewings (at least) to fully comprehend this complex and deeply moving film. Director Bruce Neibaur's vision is complete in the portrayal of Scott, the wholesome, blond-haired boy whose only wish is to do good with his two wholesome, blond-haired pals. Michael Whetherred's performance as Pete, the troubled young man who has gotten into trouble with gangs in Chicago, is heart-wrenchingly accurate. When Pete makes a gang of his own with two other pals (we know they are bad because they wear black muscle shirts and have dark hair), it's up to Scott to win Pete back to the pure-hearted, helpful Buttercream Gang. Subtle and evocative, "The Buttercream Gang" masks an important moral beneath layers of inventive dialog and innovative filming. The whole meaning and depth of this movie cannot be realized in one cursory viewing. I urge everyone to watch this film again and again.
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
blah
Could anything have sucked more than this movie? I don't think so. At least "Surf Ninjas" didn't pretend to be good.
I have to write more because IMDB requires it even though there is nothing more to say about this load of crap. There. Done.
Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985)
Large Marge sent me.
This is one of the greatest movies ever filmed. Why it did not win an Oscar is beyond me. No one can deny the hilarity of Pee-Wee Herman. Those of us who love this movie are some of the few that understand the genius that is PeeWee.
