Noting the recent trend of Ben Affleck’s “Air,” Matt Johnson’s “Blackberry,” Eva Longoria’s “Flamin’ Hot,” and, though perhaps a bit on the silly side, Jerry Seinfeld’s “Unfrosted,” there seems to be an increasing market for stories about consumer goods and marketing. Deadline announced Wednesday that the latest to get in the act are Judd Apatow and Steven Spielberg with a picture called “Cola Wars,” all about the rivalry between Coca-Cola and Pepsi.
“Cola Wars,” which Spielberg will produce and Apatow will direct, is written by Jason Shuman and Ben Queen. Shuman is best known for co-creating the series “Acapulco” on Apple TV + and was an executive producer on “Winning Time,” another nostalgia-soaked based-on-reality project about the peak years of the Los Angeles Lakers. Queen’s credits include “Cars 2” and “Cars 3.” The project is set up at Sony.

Judd Apatow directs, Steven Spielberg produces, as Sony moves ahead with Cola Wars, a movie about Coca Cola and Pepsi’s battle.
Just recently, we covered a report which looked at how Judd Apatow, the one-time king of Hollywood comedies, was struggling to get original projects off the ground. It’s been a few years since Apatow’s period as a director and ‘super-producer’, during which he shepherded lots of popular comedies through the studio system.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has selected Apatow to direct Cola Wars. It’s a drama that will recount the fierce battle between industry titan Coca Cola and upstart Pepsi in the 1980s.
We first learned of the project back in February, along with the claim that Sony had paid more than a million dollars for a pitch. Not the script mind, just the pitch. Jason Shuman and Ben Queen will be drafting the screenplay.

Judd Apatow has signed on to direct “Cola Wars,” a film recounting the ’80s battle between Coca-Cola and Pepsi, with Steven Spielberg producing through Amblin Entertainment, TheWrap has learned.
Jason Shuman, co-creator of the Apple TV+ show “Acapulco,” is co-writing the screenplay with “Cars 3” co-writer Ben Queen.
The film will recount Pepsi’s challenge to Coca-Cola’s decades of rule as the world’s top soda, infamously leading to Coke changing its recipe to sell “New Coke,” which led to widespread horror.
The project is said to be in very early development, as Sony only just acquired the film as a pitch back in April.
Apatow most recently directed the 2022 Netflix comedy “The Bubble” and the HBO documentary “George Carlin’s American Dream.” He is repped by WME and Mosaic.
The project was first reported by Deadline.

Exclusive: Judd Apatow has attached to direct and Steven Spielberg has come aboard to produce Cola Wars, the film in development at Sony. Spielberg will produce through his Amblin Entertainment banner.
Deadline revealed back in April that the studio bought the project for $1 million-plus as a pitch, telling the true story of Pepsi’s attempt to challenge Coca-Cola’s century-long reign as the world’s top cola. It uncapped the “Cola Wars” of the mid-1980s, which included everything from Michael Jackson’s fiery mishap to the New Coke debacle, as the ultimate underdog tale of history’s most iconic second-place contender (Pepsi) vying for the No. 1 spot (Coca-Cola).
The Cola Wars pitch is being written by Jason Shuman and Ben Queen. Shuman is the co-creator/writer of Apple’s hit show Acapulco and was executive producer on HBO’s Winning Time, and the producer of 2022’s Oscar-nominated indie To Leslie.

When my younger brother was growing up, he went through an extreme car phase. We're talking collecting Micro Machines of every variety and cruising around in an electric kids Ride-On Jeep. What I'm saying is, when Pixar's "Cars" films proved hugely popular with younger Millennials and the first wave of Gen Z-ers starting in the '00s, I understood why. I was there, Gandalf.
Out of all of the animation powerhouse's franchises, "Cars" has always been the most contentious. The "Cars" universe itself makes no sense, which has spawned all manner of dark fan theories, including that these movies take place in a post-apocalyptic future where cars gained sentience Skynet-style and murdered all the humans. Also, the personalities of the vehicles tend to be based on broad cultural or ethnic stereotypes associated with their models. Meanwhile, their personal interests are primarily limited to racing because, again, they're all cars,...

There was a time when Pixar could do no wrong. As a result, everyone was shocked when Toy Story spin-off Lightyear underperformed, though that did come after former Disney CEO Bob Chapek made the controversial decision to dump titles like Luca, Soul, and Turning Red on Disney+ during the pandemic.
Elemental struggled at the box office last year (even if it managed to shake off "flop" status once its theatrical run concluded) and all eyes are on Inside Out 2 to now "save" Pixar.
The sequel is currently eyeing a $135 million global debut and early reviews could help it exceed expectations at the box office.
As we write this, the Inside Out follow-up sits at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes with 114 reviews counted. According to the Critics Consensus, "Spicing things up with the wrinkle of teenage angst, Inside Out 2 clears the head and warms the heart by living up to its predecessor's emotional intelligence.

Review: Kung Fu Panda 4 is pretty standard fare for a new movie in a franchise that’s gone inactive. Watching Kung Fu Panda 4, I couldn’t help but think of Cars 3 or Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, which were both “passing the torch” sequels that didn’t really work out that way. Cars 3 all but ended the franchise; while Ghost Protocol was so badass, people fell in love with Tom Cruise all over again, making the notion of him passing on his franchise to a would-be-successor (in that case Jeremy Renner) ludicrous. The battle between Coca-Cola and Pepsi is heading to cinemas, as Sony pays seven figures for movie pitch on the subject.
As Hollywood’s tectonic plates continue to rearrange themselves in the wake of a disruptive few years, one type of film that seems to be rising to prominence is that of the product movie. In the last year or so we’ve seen Tetris, Air, Flamin’ Hot (the Cheetos origin story) and Barbie all land with varying degrees of impact upon our shared cultural consciousness.
Obviously, Barbie is something of a special case, distinguishable from the other films as it treats its product in an entirely distinct fashion and found great success doing so. The other films on that list told a more straightforward story about the origin of an iconic product and as we’ve already predicted, they won’t be the last to do so.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has everything you could ask for from an animated Oscar contender, including sterling reviews, stellar box office and a proven awards track record. There’s one potential hitch, though: it’s a sequel. “Elemental,” an opposites-attract love story set in a world of, well, elements, began its domestic box office jaunt with $2.4 million in Thursday previews. With merely decent reviews (75% fresh and 6.5/10 on Rotten Tomatoes) and little being sold beyond “Hey, it’s the next Pixar film!”), the Peter Sohn-directed flick could struggle to match the $29 million Fri-Sun debut (amid a $39 million Wed-Sun launch) of “Toy Story” back in 1995, let alone the over/under $39 million Fri-Sun debuts of “The Good Dinosaur” in 2015 and “Onward” (which opened a week before Covid shut down the world) in 2020.
Just running the numbers, if “Elemental” legs over the weekend like “Lightyear” ($51 million from a $5.2 million Thursday), it’ll open with just $23.5 million by Sunday night. Being more optimistic, however unlikely, if “Elemental” legs like “Cars 3” ($53 million/$2.6 million), well, then it opens with $49 million and you can ignore the next few paragraphs of doom-n-gloom.

Wall Street treated Bob Iger’s return to Disney like sweet candy and gobbled up shares. Now the sugar rush has worn off.
Iger’s promises to offer up creative freedom while also cutting costs and leaning into IP are already being tested in a wary market that’s watching the box office and other metrics closely. The pressure for financial discipline could prove a tough test for his transitional tenure.
The latest Marvel film’s underperformance is just one striking example of the obstacles in Iger’s way. With an end-of-weekend-three total of $187 million domestically and $420 million worldwide, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is on track to earn less in North America than “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and less worldwide than either previous “Ant-Man” film. Disney’s stock price ended Wednesday barely over $99, down from $117 a month ago after a confident performance by Iger on an earnings call.

Pixar’s “Cars” have circled back around.
“Cars on the Road,” a connection of interlocking shorts that just premiered on Disney+ as part of the Disney+ Day festivities, follows Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) and Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) as they embark on a cross-country road trip for Mater’s sister’s wedding. Along the way they check into a haunted house, join the circus and cross paths with bigfoot. The shorts are incredibly charming and fit perfectly within the already-established “Cars” universe.
TheWrap spoke with Steve Purcell, who wrote every episode and directed three of the nine shorts and Brian Fee, who directed three of the shorts (and directed the very underrated “Cars 3”). Purcell and Fee told us about reusing characters from the “Cars” movies, creating stop-motion animation in CGI and how a surf guitar helped soften a ghostly visitation.
Where did the idea for “Cars on the Road” come from?...

Review: Cars in the ultimate black sheep in the Pixar catalog. A passion project for writer/director John Lasseter, the Cars trilogy of films are the lowest-rated Pixar films according to Rotten Tomatoes. There’s a lot riding on “Luck,” the debut feature from Skydance Animation and Apple Original Films. The fantasy comedy’s August 5 premiere on Apple TV+ not only signals a new animation player, but also the first new feature produced by John Lasseter after his departure from Pixar and Disney amid allegations of improper workplace conduct.
A sweet film about the unluckiest girl in the world, Sam (Eva Noblezada), and her journey into the magical Land of Luck, “Luck” was already in the works at Skydance prior to Lasseter coming aboard as the head of Skydance Animation. At the time, DreamWorks vets Alessandro Carloni (“Kung Fu Panda 3”) and Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger (the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise) were attached as director and screenwriters. However, when Lasseter joined Skydance, he wanted a change in direction, turning to two women he had worked with at Disney and Pixar. Peggy Holmes...

“Luck,” the first animated feature from Skydance and Apple TV+ has debuted its first trailer.
The film tells the story of Sam Greenfield, the unluckiest person in the world, who when she stumbles into the never-before-seen Land of Luck, sets out on a quest to bring some good luck home for her best friend. But with humans not allowed, her only chance is teaming up with the magical creatures who live there to do it.
The trailer begins with Sam (Eva Noblezada) blundering her way through a series of misfortunes: she wakes up a minute before she’s supposed to be somewhere, accidentally locks herself in a bathroom, and bonks her head on various objects. It seems like her luck is finally about to change when she finds a magical penny, “something that could finally turn my life around!”

Tim Allen has finally weighed in on “Lightyear,” the Pixar movie inspired by the character he made famous in four “Toy Story” movies. Chris Evans voices the title character in “Lightyear.” The film functions in the “Toy Story” universe as the movie that inspired the toy that Allen voices, which is why Evans stepped into the role and why Allen was not involved. If it all sounds confusing, well, it is.
“The short answer is I’ve stayed out of this because it has nothing to do [with my character],” Allen told “Extra” about the Pixar spinoff. “This is a whole new team that really had nothing to do with the first movies.”
“Lightyear” is directed by Angus MacLane, who was an animator on “Toy Story 2” and “Toy Story 3.” Allen said he spoke with Pixar years ago about a potential standalone movie for Buzz Lightyear. The actor also revealed he originally...

The last weekend of June ended the second month of summer with a terrific showing with four movies making 20 million or more, the first time this has happened in a very, very long time. Usually in summer, we get one or two major releases each weekend, driving down previous box office champs. June offered so many major releases, so a weekend with two relatively smaller movies could still do well against the juggernauts. It’s a nice change from earlier this year when a huge blockbuster would immediately be followed by one or two dud weekends.

Warner Bros.’ “Elvis” is in a virtual tie for No. 1 at the box office with Paramount/Skydance’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” earning 12.7 million on Friday from 3,906 theaters as industry estimates project a 30 million opening.
Such a result for Baz Luhrmann’s biopic on The King of Rock and Roll would match pre-weekend projections, and reception has also been strong with an A- on CinemaScore and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 79 critics and 93 audience.
“Elvis” still has a way to go before it reaches profitability with a reported 85 million budget, but the film is performing consistently with other summer music biopics and turning out older audiences. While other Warner Bros. releases last year like “Cry Macho” and “King Richard” failed to attract older audiences, the studio reports that 60 of opening day crowds for “Elvis” were over the age of 35 while 43 were over 50, giving hope that those demographics will continue to support the film well into July.

From the Top Gun and Jurassic Park sequels to the Toy Story spinoff, the past month at the box office has been one fueled by nostalgia. Now, the nostalgia train continues, not with a sequel or spinoff, but with Elvis, the first feature biopic about the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. As for audiences more in the mood for shivering than shimmying, they can dial into The Black Phone, the latest from horror practitioner Scott Derrickson. While neither film is expected to top the charts, the month is still ending on a positive note as the top four titles this weekend should all come in above 20 million, which would be the first time for this to happen since November 2018.

The 89er Theatre in Kingfisher, Oklahoma has come under fire after posting a warning about a brief gay kiss featured in Pixar’s “Lightyear.” A sign was posted on the window of the theater during the movie’s opening weekend warning moviegoers about the gay kiss and claiming the theater would “do all we can to fast-forward” through the scene. Kingfisher is located about 50 miles from Oklahoma City.
As reported by NBC News, the warning post included the following message: “Attention Parents: The management of this theatre discovered after booking ‘Lightyear’ that there is a same-sex kissing scene within the first 30 minutes of the Pixar movie. We will do all we can to fast-forward through that scene, but it might not be exact.”

’Top Gun: Maverick’ to cross 900m worldwide in next day or two.
Jurassic World: Dominion grossed a confirmed 136.3m at the global box office as Universal-Amblin’s adventure kept Top Gun: Maverick and new arrival Lightyear at bay to reign supreme as the weekend champion.
After several weeks in release Colin Trevorrow’s latest entry in the Jurassic franchise which began 29 years ago stands at 623.6m worldwide. Seventy-three international territories brought in a further 77.3m after a 54 drop for a 373.5m running total. The North American tally is 250.1m after two weekends and the film ranks number one there too.

It’s hard to escape the deflating sense that Disney’s “Lightyear” has remained stubbornly Earth-bound in its box office debut. At least, that’s the prevailing sentiment that’s greeted the latest Pixar film’s so-so 51 million opening weekend in North America.
For industry analysts, those lackluster ticket sales were confounding because Pixar had been box office royalty and “Lightyear,” a spinoff of the cosmically successful “Toy Story” franchise, landed decent — though not euphoric — reviews. Moreover, audiences (who awarded the film an “A-” CinemaScore”) seemed to be entertained by the animated otherworldly adventure, in which Chris Evans takes over from Tim Allen as the voice of Buzz Lightyear.
To be sure, a 51 million opening weekend is far from catastrophic; in fact, “Lightyear” landed one of the best debuts for an animated kid friendly film in Covid times. Family audiences have returned in fits and starts, but it’s a...

Universal’s “Jurassic World: Dominion” has scored a box office upset this weekend, earning 58.6 million to pass 250 million domestic and 600 million worldwide while taking the top spot on the charts from Disney/Pixar’s underperforming “Lightyear.”
“Dominion” became the eighth Hollywood film of the Covid era to pass 500 million worldwide on Friday and is well on pace alongside Paramount/Skydance’s “Top Gun: Maverick” to reach the 1 billion mark. The 58 million second weekend domestic total is a touch below the 60 million earned by “Jurassic World; Fallen Kingdom” in 2018, but with Monday being a federal holiday in observance of Juneteenth, Universal is estimating a 9.4 million Monday total to give the film a 68 million 4-day weekend.
“Lightyear,” meanwhile, is opening well short of box office projections, which had pegged the film to top the 72 million opening of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” to score the best family film opening of the year. Instead,...

The 2022 box office has its first big projection miss of the season as Disney/Pixar’s “Lightyear,” which had been expected to earn the best family movie opening of the year, is now estimated for a soft 52 million opening and could lose the No. 1 spot this weekend to Universal’s “Jurassic World: Dominion.”
Pre-release projections for the “Toy Story” spinoff were expected to be at least 75 million with many analysts expecting a start in the 80 million range. That would have put “Lightyear” in the neighborhood of past Pixar films “Monsters University” and “Inside Out” and would have beaten the 72 million opening of spring family title “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Instead, it is opening around the 53 million start posted by “Cars 3” in 2017.

TheWrap’s film critic Alonso Duralde rates all the Pixar animation studio’s features:
24. Cars 2 (2011) “They should let people see the movie for free,” one pundit opined, “since Disney will make all their money back on the bedsheets.” Some of Pixar’s best movies are sequels, but this follow-up to an already inferior studio entry seemed like nothing but a craven bid for more merchandising money. The results were good for shareholders but middling for moviegoers.
23. Cars (2006) Never underestimate little boys and their love for automobiles. This brightly colored but dramatically flat tale is most enjoyed by a) male moviegoers who b) saw it before they turned 10 and c) have no idea that it tells virtually the same story as the Michael J. Fox comedy “Doc Hollywood.”
22. Cars 3 (2017) It’s a movie about middle age and the fear of obsolescence — you know, for kids! While Lightning (Owen Wilson...

Unlike the three other highly anticipated franchises to debut since May — “Doctor Strange” (Disney), “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount), and “Jurassic World: Dominion”(Universal) — Pixar’s “Lightyear” (Disney) will be the only one to open under 100 million. Projections are around 75 million, which might be a generous assessment.
Why the struggle for the fifth film in the “Toy Story” franchise, the most lucrative in animation? In adjusted grosses, they represent a domestic total of over 1.8 billion and the most recent in 2019 earned 441 million. However, this is not “Toy Story 5”; it’s a Buzz Lightyear origin story, which reduces its initial potential.
It also faces competition. “Toy Story 4” opened around the same date in 2018 to 121 million its first weekend, on the way to 441 million domestic. It faced a weak field, including the second week of the flat “Men in Black: International” and a “Child’s Play” reboot. This year, it faces “Jurassic World: Dominion...

There is still this odd idea out there that, in the last decade, Pixar have been decidedly mixed bag, which when you consider this timescale saw them release the likes of Inside Out, Coco, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4 and Soul, among others, is a rather curious conclusion to come to. True, a couple of outings, like Brave, The Good Dinosaur and Cars 3 have divided opinion but when it comes to this studio, they are often bolstered by their historically high standard. So, with this in mind, how does their latest (and third straight) Disney+ released feature fare?

Disney and Pixar’s “Lightyear,” out this June, has restored to the film what would be the animation studio’s first same-sex kiss in a feature film, between a character called Hawthorne (voiced by Uzo Aduba) and her partner.
An individual with knowledge of the film’s production said that the same-sex relationship was always a part of the movie and never up for debate, but the kiss itself was ultimately removed as part of the creative process in terms of conversations about intimacy.
But the individual says in light of the current environment across Disney, a decision was made last week to restore the kiss to the finished film.
The news comes after a letter released by Pixar employees in the wake of Disney’s response to the “Don’t Say Gay” legislation accused the studio of barring them from creating or showing displays of LGBTQ+ intimacy and content in their stories.

Twenty experts predict Disney’s “Encanto” will win, while one forecasts Netflix’s “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” and one chooses Neon’s “Flee.” The only film listed behind “Luca” at the moment is Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon.”
But I would suggest “Luca” should get more attention and consideration in the category because it’s a marvelously inventive tale of friendship, love, the need for change, and finding your own path. Telling the story of a half-human, half-sea monster who experiences an unforgettable seaside summer on the Italian Riviera, “Luca” marks the feature directorial debut of Enrico Casarosa, director of the Oscar-nominated 2011 Pixar short, “La Luna.” The original story was penned by Jesse Andrews and Mike Jones.

A star is born — twice over. Alana Haim and Rachel Zegler have turned in breakout performances in their film debuts, “Licorice Pizza” and “West Side Story,” respectively. Now can either of them — or both — score a Best Actress Oscar nomination?
Haim’s and Zegler’s paths to knocking at the Oscars’ door are completely different. Haim was already an established, Grammy-nominated musician with her two older sisters and Haim bandmates Este and Danielle (who also appear in “Licorice Pizza” along with their parents) by the time Paul Thomas Anderson, who had directed several Haim music videos, cast her as Alana Kane in his ’70s-set tale of teenage love and infatuation. Her naturalistic performance and chemistry with Cooper Hoffman have won her critical praise and the National Board of Review Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, shared with Hoffman. Since “Licorice Pizza” first screened last month, Haim has risen to eighth place...

Actor, comedian and writer Cristela Alonzo doesn’t like it when competition series make the judges or the hosts into the stars of the show, because she wants the contestants, who are the ones tasked with physically, mentally and emotionally demanding feats, to be celebrated. So when she was tapped to host The CW’s “Legends of the Hidden Temple” reboot, she made sure to cheer on the teams that came through every episode.
“I want them to know they’ve got it!” she tells Variety. “I wanted to make sure that everybody was Ok — meaning, if a contestant asked for water and they weren’t heard, I would stop things to make sure they got a bottle of water. I’m the youngest in my family, but I’m the matriarch, so my instinct is, I need to make sure everybody’s Ok.”
But undoubtedly she will still be...

Owen Wilson made his first-ever hosting appearance on NBC’s Saturday Night Live in the season 47 premiere.
“A lot has changed since last season. The vaccine came out everywhere except Florida, and the rest of the country went back to normal for about a week and a half,” the Texas-born actor said in opening his monologue and talked about growing up as a middle child, pointing to his brothers, actors Luke Wilson and Andrew Wilson, in the audience. (Luke Wilson later joined his brother for a taped Star Trek sketch in which the duo played Jeff Bezos and his brother.)
“I am excited to be here doing something live,” Wilson said, noting that unlike with movies, “reviews will be coming in immediately. People are probably tweeting reviews right now.”
While Wilson has been told that if he gets to read the good reviews, he also needs to read the bad ones,...

Owen Wilson hosted the season 47 premiere of “Saturday Night Live” on October 2, with musical guest Kacey Musgraves. Despite his decades in the industry, this marks Wilson’s first time hosting “SNL,” though he made a cameo appearance as his “Zoolander” character Hansel in a 2016 episode of the NBC sketch series. Meanwhile, this is Musgraves’s second appearance as musical guest, following a stint in 2018. For his opening monologue, Wilson spoke of life growing up as a “forgotten” middle child, while his brothers, Luke and Andrew, watched from the show’s audience.
SEEWhich cast members are leaving ‘Saturday Night Live’ and who are the 3 new featured players for Season 47?
The actor went on to discuss his excitement over doing something live, in contrast with his typical mode of making a film, then waiting a year to get reviews. But as Wilson observed, “People are probably tweeting reviews right now.” He noted...

Disney/20th Century Studios dropped the latest trailer Thursday for “Ron’s Gone Wrong” (October 22 in theaters), which centers on the friendship between the titular malfunctioning robot (voiced by Zach Galifianakis) and socially awkward middle-schooler Barney (voiced by Jack Dylan Graze). It marks the first animated feature from UK-based Locksmith Animation, directed by co-founder Sarah Smith (“Arthur Christmas”) and former Pixar story artist Jean-Philippe Vine (“Cars 3”). Peter Baynham (the “Borat” movies and “Arthur Christmas”) and Smith co-wrote the script with an emphasis on tech frustration and unhealthy dependence on social media.
“Coco” story artist Octavio Rodriguez served as co-director, Julie Lockhart (co-founder and president of Locksmith) produced with Lara Breay (“Penguins of Madagascar”), VFX studio Dneg (“Dune”) made its first animated feature, and the voice cast also includes Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), Ed Helms (“The Office”), Justice Smith (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”), Rob Delaney (“Deadpool 2“), Kylie Cantrall (“Gabby Duran...
