“CSI: Vegas” may be canceled, but CBS isn’t giving up on the franchise. The Eye network announced Tuesday a new edition in the “CSI” universe — but this time in the unscripted space.
CBS has ordered the unscripted, true-crime docuseries “The Real CSI: Miami” based on the drama “CSI: Miami,” which aired from 2002 to 2012 (for 10 seasons and 232 episodes). The new series is set to release on CBS on June 26 at 10 p.m. Et. The news came as CBS announced its summer lineup.
The logline for “The Real CSI: Miami” reads, “Each episode features gripping real-life crime cases and the cutting-edge forensic science used to solve them. ‘The Real CSI: Miami’ highlights that at the heart of every story is a victim and a family seeking justice.”
The news of another “CSI” show being ordered comes after the last show in the franchise “CSI: Vegas” announced its cancellation in April after three seasons.

Exclusive: Anthony E. Zuiker, the creator of the hugely successful CSI TV franchise, has signed with boutique management firm Literate.
This marks a rare new addition to Zuiker’s close-knit representation team, nicknamed affectionately by the writer-producer “Team Zuiker,” who has been shaping his career and brand for more than two decades.
It follows the January death of Zuiker’s beloved manager of over 25 years, Margaret Riley, most recently of Lighthouse Entertainment, who passed away from cancer at the age of 58.
In a moving tribute for Deadline at the time, Zuiker recalled how Riley signed Zuiker on his 30th birthday, 8/17/1998, when he was still trying to break into Hollywood. Helping him land early writing gigs that led to CSI, Riley also took Zuiker to the talent agencies, with him landing at CAA with Joe Cohen, and introduced him to entertainment lawyer Kevin Yorn. NCIS has been part of the television landscape for the past two decades.
Following a two-episode backdoor pilot on Jag in 2003, the redundantly named Navy NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service debuted in the fall of that year.
Although it started slowly ratings-wise in its first couple of seasons, a franchise soon was born.
Now in its 21st season, NCIS has produced more than 450 episodes and six spinoff series, a record unmatched in TV history (although Law & Order fans doubtless will quibble).
Maybe now, shortly after the series said goodbye to its second-most popular character on NCIS Season 21 Episode 2, would be a good time for a hiatus.
That's insane, you say, what with two new spinoffs in the pipeline.
Look back fondly
Let's start with the fact that every day, on cable and streaming, fans can watch their favorite episodes from the golden years of NCIS, back before Abby, Tony, Ziva,...

James Van Der Beek has sued SiriusXM over a failed podcast deal.
The Dawson’s Creek alum filed a complaint for breach of contract in Los Angeles, claiming that SiriusXM agreed to a deal worth a minimum of 700k (£599k) for 40 podcast episodes.

Before CBS had “NCIS” and its never-ending amount of spinoffs, it was “CSI” that provided the network with the blueprint for creating a franchise out of crime procedurals. While “NCIS” is chugging along into its 19th season, with a new Hawaii spinoff on the way, CBS is returning back to the Crime Scene Lab in Las Vegas.
CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl said the decision to bring back “CSI” for a sequel was partly due to nostalgia as well as the wave of true-crime series on streaming services.
“Not just on broadcast but I mean if you look at even documentaries on a lot of streaming services, crime is just very interesting to people and people have an insatiable appetite for it,” Kahl told TheWrap. “The producers behind ‘CSI’ came to us and said, we have a lot more we can do now, we have a lot more we can look at.

CBS is feasting on franchises this fall, unveiling a lineup with three new hour-longs — all extensions of popular Eye drama brands — and one new comedy. The new schedule boasts three different iterations of “FBI” (including newcomer “FBI: International”), three editions of “NCIS” (with the freshman “NCIS: Hawai’i” replacing the outgoing New Orleans series) and the return of the “CSI” universe, via “CSI: Vegas.”
In perhaps the biggest gambit, CBS will shift longtime Tuesday juggernaut “NCIS” from the 8 p.m. timeslot that the Mark Harmon vehicle has known since its launch in 2003 to a new home on Mondays at 9 p.m., where it will be paired with the new “NCIS Hawai’i” at 10 p.m. After talk that “NCIS” might end its run without him, Harmon signed on to return for the 19th season of the show — but the timeslot move may lead to more speculation that this is the long-running series’ swan song.

Dick Wolf is spearheading another extension of his venerable Law & Order franchise, and this time he has partnered with one of the key auspices behind another hugely successful procedural drama franchise from the last two decades, CSI‘s Carol Mendelsohn.
NBC has given a straight-to-series order to Law & Order: For the Defense, a new legal drama from Law & Order creator Wolf, which will take a look inside a criminal defense firm. The series will put the lawyers under the microscope, along with the criminal justice system, with every week delivering the promise of a contemporary morality tale.
“This new show is exciting for me personally,” Wolf said. “We spent the last 30 years on shows that played offense. Now it will be great to play defense, and being able to do it with Carol is an honor and an opportunity for both of us to do television that hasn’t been done before.

The new show would join the flagship “NCIS,” which is in its 18th season, and “NCIS: Los Angeles.” “NCIS” itself was a spinoff from CBS’ long-running procedural “Jag.”
Reps for CBS and CBS Studios, which produces all “NCIS” series, declined to comment.
“NCIS” first debuted in 2003 and has launched successful spinoffs with “Los Angeles” and “New Orleans” versions, though the latter series had to fire its showrunner Brad Kern in 2018 after multiple accusations of abusive behavior.
The network has explored other spinoffs, including one centered on a mobile anti-terrorist unit that had John Corbett and Kim Raver attached to star.
The network is closing in on a straight-to-series order for a spinoff set in the youngest U.S. state, which would be led by “NCIS: New Orleans” showrunner Chris Silber. CBS’ formidable NCIS drama franchise is on an expansion course again. Deals are still being finalized, but I hear that the network is prepping NCIS: Hawaii, a new installment in the hit procedural franchise.
Created/executive produced by NCIS: New Orleans executive producers/showrunner Christopher Silber and Jan Nash as well as Seal Team writer-producer Matt Bosack, the project is expected to feature a new team based in Hawaii. Unlike fellow offshoots NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans, I hear there are no current plans for NCIS: Hawaii to be introduced as a planted spinoff from one of the other NCIS series. CBS and the studio behind the NCIS franchise, CBS Studios, declined comment.
If NCIS: Hawaii goes to series and the existing NCIS series all get renewed, NCIS could join Law & Order as the second drama franchise with four series on the air at the same time.

CBS is poised to step back into the world of CSI.
Months after a revival was first teased, more casting details have been revealed.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Lauria, Paula Newsome, and Mel Rodriguez (Last Man on Earth) have joined the cast of the revival.
Lauria is on board as Josh, a Level 3 CSI who excels at crime scene reconstruction, while Newsome is set to play Maxine, the new head of the Vegas Crime lab.
Rodriguez will play Hugo, the head medical examiner who has a slightly creepy obsession with dead bodies.
Casting is still very much underway, but franchise veterans William Petersen and Jorja Fox are said to have agreed to return for the event series.
CBS has not issued a formal pickup, but in this reboot-heavy world, a new iteration of CSI is hardly surprising.

As CBS’ revival of “CSI” is nearing a series pickup, three actors have been added to the cast. Paula Newsome, Matt Lauria and Mel Rodriguez are joining the project, which would revive the series more than 20 years after it debuted in 2000.
Though multiple outlets reported Friday that the “CSI” revival was closing in on a straight-to-series order, CBS declined to comment on its status. Original “CSI” stars William Petersen and Jorja Fox have also been rumored to appear on the revival, but that has not been confirmed.
The show’s creative team, including Anthony Zuiker and Jerry Bruckheimer, are returning for the revival.
“CSI” first premiered in October 2000 and was CBS’ longest-running TV franchise until “NCIS” surpassed it a few years ago. It ran for 15 seasons, airing a special two-hour finale movie in 2015. It also spawned three spinoffs: “CSI: Miami” which starred David Caruso, the Gary Sinease-led “CSI: NY” and the short-lived “CSI: Cyber,...

Paula Newsome, Matt Lauria and Mel Rodriguez have been cast as leads in CSI: Vegas, which is nearing a formal straight-to-series order at CBS, I have learned.
I hear William Petersen and Jorja Fox are finalizing their deals to star in CSI: Vegas, which serves as a sequel to the mothership CSI series, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, reprising their roles as Gil Grissom and Sara Sidle, respectively. While billed as an event series, I hear CSI: Vegas, from writer Jason Tracey (Elementary), CBS Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer TV, could become an ongoing series running for multiple seasons.
With CSI: Vegas, the most watched drama series of the 21st century, CSI, opens a new chapter in Las Vegas, the city where it all began. Facing an existential threat that could bring down the Crime Lab, a brilliant team of forensic investigators must welcome back old friends and deploy new techniques to...

Exclusive: 13 Reasons Why star Alisha Boe is joining Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard in the A24 movie When You Finish Saving The World.
Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut, a mother-son comedy-drama, has been scripted by Eisenberg and is being produced by Emma Stone and her SNL writer-director partner Dave McCary for their Fruit Tree banner alongside Moore.
Inspired by Eisenberg’s Audible project of the same name, the film will have a slightly different focus than the audiobook, which was scripted by and starred Eisenberg. Set over three decades, the six-part audio show follows three members of a family: Nathan, a father learning to connect with his newborn son; Rachel, a young college student seeking to find her place in a relationship and in life; and Ziggy, a teenager hoping to figure out where he came from, and where he’s headed. Billy Bryk will also star.

Exclusive: Molly Burnett, who has recurred on Queen of the South since Season 2 as Kelly Anne, has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming fifth season of the USA Network series.
Starring Alice Braga, Queen of the South is based on the bestselling book La Reina del Sur by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. It tells the story of Teresa Mendoza (Braga), a woman who is forced to run from the Mexican cartel and seek refuge in America.
Burnett’s Kelly Anne is the on-again, off-again member of Teresa’s drug operation. Kelly Anne’s journey has seen her killing her abusive husband, turning informant with a Houdini-like dodging of a cartel hit, and a fall into cocaine addiction. Kelly Ann was last seen in the end of Season 4 finding sobriety and her way back into the Teresa’s operations in New Orleans.

Regina King is set to executive produce a drama series currently in development at The CW, Variety has confirmed.
Titled “Slay,” the series focuses on Carson Jones. She is described as a bold, witty teenager with afro puffs, leather boots, seventies cool, and – thanks to her mother’s ancient African bloodline – supernatural gifts and the responsibility to use them to protect Virginia’s Historic Triangle (one of the most haunted areas in the country) from the forces of darkness.
Julian Johnson will write and co-executive produce, with Pam Veasey supervising and executive producing. Regina and her sister Reina King will executive produce via their production company, Royal Ties. CBS Television Studios will produce.
Regina is fresh off her Emmy win for her starring role in the HBO limited series “Watchmen.” It marked the fourth Emmy of her career, having previously won twice for “American Crime” and again for “Seven Seconds.
