This is a reunion film based on the 1970-71 television series of the same name.
This is NOT a reunion film as stated; when Burt Reynolds first became famous after Deliverance they syndicated his one-season cop series Dan August from 1973 (the show ended in 1971) until 1975; then after his blockbuster success in Smokey and the Bandit they turned pairs of unconnected episodes into single TV-movies. This was done by TV mogul Quinn Martin, who wasn't making that many more original shows.
