The Stifmeister is coming to ABC for the upcoming comedy series Shifting Gears. The Milf hunter, Seann William Scott, joins Tim Allen and Kat Dennings for the multi-camera project, which goes into production in November. Scott boards the series for a lead role that replaces the character Nick from the pilot episode.
According to the show’s description, Tim Allen plays Matt, the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter, Riley (Dennings), and her teenage kids move into his house, the actual restoration begins. Scott plays Gabriel for the series, a family friend of Matt and Riley who works at the shop with Matt. Scott’s Gabriel replaces Nick from the pilot. Initially, Froy Gutierrez played Nick. Nick was Matt’s son and Riley’s younger brother, who spent his days coding video games. Nick is no longer a part of the show as it moves into production.

Paul Feig wants critics to know that it’s Ok for an action comedy to just…be an action comedy.
The director said during Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s on Me” podcast that his latest film “Jackpot!” was “excoriated” by reviewers. The feature starred Awkwafina as an unassuming jackpot lottery winner who must survive until sunset to cash in on her winnings while the whole world is trying to murder her and take her prize. John Cena and Simu Liu co-starred.
“Now I can be happy because we’ve been the number one movie worldwide on Amazon for four weeks in a row now, which is fantastic,” Feig said. “But the critics excoriated us. I mean, took the biggest dump on this movie. All I can figure is like, from the reviews I read, I think they were trying to find a lot of meaning in this premise.”

AMC made a bet earlier this year that licensing a number of its shows to Netflix would help them find more viewers. That bet appears to have paid off.
Two AMC shows, Dark Winds and A Discovery of Witches, are among the top 10 streaming titles for the week of Aug. 19-25. They were added to Netflix at the beginning of that week as part of a deal struck in July to place about a dozen AMC shows on the service, complete with branding as the “AMC Collection.” (The shows will be available for 12 months.)
It’s not new territory for AMC, which partially credited Netflix for a huge spike in ratings for Breaking Bad’s final season and has also licensed The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul, among others, to the streamer in the past.
Dark Winds drew 929 million minutes of viewing for the week, good for fourth place overall.

Considering his show's called Black Mirror, creator, writer, and eternal pessimist Charlie Brooker sure does have a habit of finding actors who light up the screen with their work to bring his dark sci-fi tales to life. “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 suffered a major viewership drop in its second week on Luminate’s weekly streaming originals chart.
Last week, the Amazon Prime Video series managed to nab second place with 764.7 million minutes watched in the first full week of availability of its first three episodes combined with the first day of availability of its fourth episode. But during the Sept. 6-12 viewing window — which included the first full week of Episode 4 and the first day of Episode 5 — it only hit 372.7 million minutes watched, landing in fourth place. While there was less new content to watch compared to the week before, when the first three episodes has just debuted, it still doesn’t bode well for a large IP title to drop by more than 50% after one week, when word-of-mouth appeal should still be high. It should be noted that Luminate only measures U.

Netflix released the first half of Emily in Paris‘ fourth season Aug. 15, and as a result got just over half of the tune-in for the show’s last full-season premiere.
The dramedy starring Lily Collins gathered 792 million minutes of viewing in the United States for its premiere week, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. That was good for third place among original series and ninth overall, but was also down 43 percent from the 1.39 billion minutes for the first week of season three’s release — which featured all 10 episodes of that installment, as opposed to five this time out.

If you're a Netflix subscriber, you know how this works by now. A movie debuts in theaters and either nobody goes to see it and/or the critics tear it to pieces, only for the film to see a resurgence in interest when it becomes available for streaming. It happened just recently with the Mike Myers flop "The Cat in the Hat," and would you believe even "Madame Web" saw success when it finally hit Netflix? You probably would, because as Michael Fassbender flop "The Snowman" proved in 2023, Netflix subscribers will pretty much watch anything.
Netflix is the kingmaker among streamers with 277 million subscribers, but Amazon Prime Video's 230 million subs isn't too shabby. As it happens, we have a good example of how a brand new critical flop can become a hit on Prime Video with "Jackpot!," the 2024 action comedy from "Bridesmaids" and "Spy" director by Paul Feig. The first Shang-Chi movie was a notable success for Marvel, resonating well with audiences despite some criticisms of certain plot elements. Given its success, fans are eagerly awaiting the sequel, which Marvel has officially announced.
However, updates on the sequel have been sparse. In response to this, series star Simu Liu, the Canadian actor who plays Shang-Chi, was recently asked about the sequel’s progress. While he didn’t provide specific details, he did share some insights into the current status of the highly anticipated follow-up.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings premiered in 2021, garnering mostly positive reviews and earning $432.2 million against a budget of $150-200 million, marking it as a success. Fans appreciated Marvel’s expansion of its character roster, and Simu Liu’s portrayal of the titular superhero was well-received. Marvel confirmed a sequel would be in the works, but updates have been sparse, leaving some fans concerned.

Marvel’s Shang-Chi might not be one of the most popular superheroes when compared to some members of the Avengers, but his popularity is certainly increasing thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He is a very interesting character with rich lore and that is why fans love him.
The first Shang-Chi movie was a solid success for Marvel and most of the fans liked it, although they did have some issues with how some plot elements were handled. Still, the production can generally be considered a success and that is why the fans are waiting for a sequel, which has been announced by Marvel.
Still, despite that, no updates have been provided for a while, which is why the series star, Canadian actor Simu Liu, was asked about the state of the sequel, and while he did not give us any precise details, he did reveal some information about...

Freaks and Geeks brought ‘90s teens some of the most relatable lines on television (bangers like “I don’t need another friend. I’ve got two”) as well as helped launch the careers of budding comedy legends Busy Phillips, Jason Segel and Seth Rogen, to name just a few.
Other famous Freaks and Geeks alums include — take a deep breath — Linda Cardellini, John Francis Daley, Martin Starr, James Franco, Sarah Hagan, Samm Levine, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Rashida Jones, David Krumholtz, Lizzy Caplan, Shia Labeouf, Ben Stiller, Leslie Mann, Mike White, Jason Schwartzman, Ann Dowd and Shaun Weiss.

Too bad the 1999 show with a nearly-perfect script and cast was slashed by NBC after only a single season, but its tragic cancellation earned it cult classic status. Freaks and Geeks, created by Paul Feig and exec-produced by Judd Apatow, has been on numerous lists of the greatest shows of all time.

John Cena says he understands why David Zaslav decided to cancel the release of Coyote vs. Acme after its completion, a corporate line-toeing that aligns with his personal philosophy of, “You can’t see me.”
In late 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO Zaslav shelved the half-animated, half-live-action Looney Tunes movie about a hapless antagonist’s quest for justice after suffering decades of misfortune thanks to ineffective products purchased from the Acme corporation. Coyote vs. Acme, which began development long before Zaslav’s Discovery merged with WarnerMedia in 2022, was a labor of love that brought together such comedic talents as Adam McKay, James Gunn, Will Forte and Cena in an homage to the characters and cartoons that have enriched so many childhoods for the better part of the last century.

Jeff Goldblum is on hosting duty for “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” this week, but he briefly put his interview with “Jackpot!” star Awkwafina on hold Thursday night, in order to safely escort a fly from the studio. Yes, a literal fly.
Coming back from a commercial break in the interview, “The Fly” actor became immediately distracted, revealing that he had been informed during the break that a fly had landed on his desk and had remained there.
“Look, it’s not dead!” he marveled. “It’s not dead. I don’t know why it’s just — it’s just there. It doesn’t seem to want to move. I mention this ’cause I played in La Mouche, ‘The Fly,’ I was the fly. So this is just mighty strange.”
From there, Goldblum opted to escort the fly to safety, explaining that he always tells his kids “don’t hurt anything.” So,...

Stars: Awkwafina, John Cena, Simu Liu, Ayden Mayeri, Donald Elise Watkins, Murray Hill | Written by Rob Yescombe | Directed by Paul Feig
Awkwafina and John Cena star in this Amazon Prime action comedy, directed by Paul Feig. The plot is flimsy and it lacks a satirical edge, but the two leads have comic chemistry to burn and there’s a steady stream of decent gags.
Set in a mildly dystopian future, Jackpot! takes place in Los Angeles, where a billion-dollar lottery win comes with a catch: if you win, you have to survive until sundown, because people can legally try and kill you to take your prize for themselves. The only other rule is that you’re not allowed to use guns, which is just as well, or the movie would have been one long shoot-out.

Paul Feig has directed some of the most beloved comedies of the last decade, including “Bridesmaids,” “Spy,” several classic episodes of “The Office” and more. So take it from the filmmaker when he explains there’s one key to creating comedy in “the best way” — finding the perfect pair.
It’s something he’s proven skillful at, even when the project falls under a different genre. He brought together Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy on the buddy cop comedy “The Heat,” Henry Golding and Emilia Clarke in the weepy rom-com “Last Christmas,” Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick for the genre-defying “A Simple Favor” — and its impending sequel — and now his new film “Jackpot!” pairs up John Cena and Awkwafina.

Back in 2019, John Cena hadn’t quite found his solid footing in films of Hollywood. Before his fame grew with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Cena was often seen in underrated movies that failed at the box office.

Paul Feig’s new movie Jackpot! was originally called Grand Theft Lotto – but it changed late in the day. Here, he explains why.
Out now on Amazon’s Prime Video service is director Paul Feig’s return to R-rated comedy movies, Jackpot!
Starring Awkwafina and John Cena, the movie leapfrogged the now-shot A Simple Favor 2 in Feig’s queue, given how close to ready Rob Yescombe’s script and the rest of the production was.
Still, when it was first announced that Paul Feig was to direct the film, it was going under a different name: it was initially reported that the movie was called Grand Theft Lotto. In fact, the film went into production under that title, and it was only as it headed towards release did it become apparent that an alteration had been made. Now it was Jackpot!, with an exclamation mark.

Of all the celebrity cameos you might expect to pop up in “Jackpot!”, Machine Gun Kelly probably wouldn’t have been one of them. He becomes a key piece of the movie though and, according to director Paul Feig and movie stars John Cena and Awkwafina, the rapper was “so game” for it.

John Cena proved he has some singing chops in “Ricky Stanicky,” but alas, he doesn’t sing in his new film “Jackpot!” Don’t worry though, the soundtrack still has plenty of winners.

During an audition, she quite literally wins the lottery. The thing is, the lottery works a bit differently in this version of LA.

Anyone who didn’t win is allowed to legally murder the lottery winner and take over their winnings. John Cena was one of the many actors involved in Warner Bros.’ now-shelved “Coyote vs. Acme,” and he remains sad about its fate. That said, he is keeping his faith in the process that led to said fate.
The film was officially scrapped back in November, despite being fully finished and screened for some audiences. The decision sparked heavy criticism, both from fans and those involved with the film. In response, the studio walked back the decision in part, allowing the film to be shopped around. In the end, though, as TheWrap exclusively reported in February, Warner Bros. turned down several offers, and “Coyote vs. Acme” remains unreleased.
Speaking to TheWrap ahead of his new film “Jackpot!” — now streaming on Prime Video — Cena opened up about the Hollywood process and how he’s feeling about the decision all these months later.
“There’s a lot there. And everyone’s perspective is different.

John Cena was understandably put out when Warner Bros. honcho David Zaslav coldly shelved his live-action/animated comedy, “Coyote vs Acme” last year. But he may have found some comfort in Paul Feig’s “Jackpot!”, which is basically an extended “Road Runner” episode.
Though there aren’t any actual cartoon characters in “Jackpot!”, it’s more than fair to call it cartoonish — and most of the participants probably wouldn’t argue the point.
Interestingly, it’s Cena — and co-lead Awkwafina — who give the two-dimensional structure some three-dimensional heft. But they have to work pretty hard to bust out of its repetitive cycle of low-stakes comic violence. There are no anvils involved, but there might as well be.

After the misfiring Potter-esque fantasy The School For Good And Evil, Paul Feig is back on relatively solid ground with this straightforwardly enjoyable action comedy. Jackpot! occupies a similar space as Feig’s Spy, The Heat, or even a smidge of Bridesmaids: a high-concept action comedy full of wild set-pieces and frenzied action sequences.
Set in the very near future, it plays like a cross between The Purge and It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Aspiring actor Katie (Awkwafina) unwittingly finds herself the subject of a deadly lottery: whoever murders her will become a billionaire, leading to an enjoyably chaotic manhunt on the streets of Los Angeles. If she survives, she becomes the winner. Only lottery protector Noel (John Cena) can help her — for a cut of her potential winnings.

“Jackpot!” is a Prime Video comedy movie starring Awkwafina and John Cena.
Prime Video presents “Jackpot!,” an uproarious and utterly chaotic comedy that pairs the comedic prowess of Awkwafina with the no-less-talented John Cena. This film is a riotous blend of humor and madness, making it a quintessential escape into dystopian hilarity centered around the concept of a lottery.
Plot
In a world teetering on the brink of chaos, capitalism has driven the middle class into a frantic scramble for wealth. The lottery, already a massive hit, has been given a diabolical twist: the lucky winner can be legally hunted and killed for the prize, transforming the jackpot into a deadly game of cat and mouse, and providing macabre entertainment for the masses.

The ceiling’s pretty low on the action comedy category — a genre whose biggest hits tend to pepper anemic shootouts with wisecracks from former “Saturday Night Live” stars. With Prime Video entry “Jackpot!,” director Paul Feig switches up the formula, crafting stunt-intensive set-pieces where the action itself makes you laugh. That could mean anything from Awkwafina hiding out among the wax figures of a tacky Hollywood museum to the sight of ex-wrestler John Cena taking on a room of black belts with the “Crazy Rich Asians” breakout strapped to his back.
Why are people trying to kill Awkwafina? “Jackpot!” asks audiences to buy in to a clever but often illogical premise about a radical rule change to the California lottery. In the year 2030, the winning ticket comes with a price: The money’s only yours to keep if you can stay alive till sundown. In the meantime, winners must navigate...

John Cena tapped into his WWE background for new action comedy Jackpot!, coaching co-star Awkwafina on how to throw a punch during a scene where she was supposed to break his nose.
“I’ve had my nose broken in real life and this was a prosthetic so that was fantastic. I really think the setup for it was fun and when she actually did it and we did the gag, it looked great and it plays well in the movie,” Cena told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s premiere on Tuesday, adding that he told Awkwafina to “Swing for the fences, and she did.”
In the film, directed by Paul Feig, a Grand Lottery has been newly established in California, where lottery losers are allowed to kill the winner before sundown to legally claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot. Awkwafina is that lottery winner on the run, with Cena as her accomplice.

Crushing economic peril forcing otherwise sensible characters into playing potentially deadly games is an evergreen sci-fi topic — and usually, the dystopian circumstances in which the characters find themselves aren’t so difficult for us to imagine. Netflix’s Squid Game jumps off from the real crisis of personal debt in South Korea to present a 456-person, multi-round battle for a prize equivalent to $35 million Usd for whoever can outlast all their fellow contestants. Stephen King returned to the idea a couple of times: we’re only a year away from when he imagined a TV network airing The Running Man, a fight to the death only slightly more horrifying than some actual reality shows, and the spirit of The Long Walk lives on in “hands on a hard body” endurance contests. The Hunger Games features players who are drafted into participating rather than affirmatively choosing to enter, except for The Girl Who Lived,...

Plot: In the near future, a ‘Grand Lottery’ has been newly established in California – the catch: kill the winner before sundown to legally claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot. When Katie Kim moves to Los Angeles, she mistakenly finds herself with the winning ticket. Desperate to survive the hordes of jackpot hunters, she reluctantly joins forces with amateur lottery protection agent Noel Cassidy who will do everything in his power to get her to sundown in exchange for a piece of her prize. However, Noel must face off with his slick rival Louis Lewis, who also seeks to collect Katie’s commission at all costs.

The efforts of a strong cast to make a future dystopia into knockabout fun result in a discordant mismash of general ridiculousness
It’s the year 2030 in Los Angeles, and a new, vicious game is afoot. The California Grand Lottery, started in response to the Great Depression of 2026, tantalises cash-strapped citizens with hope via a mega-billions jackpot. The catch? If you win, you have to survive until sundown; anyone who kills you – and they have your location – gets your money. Also, no one can use guns.
There are some other stipulations hastily explained in Jackpot!, an Amazon MGM Studios production that, from the jump, struggles to infuse incredibly bleak conditions with lighthearted action humour. LA is beset by worse, though thinly sketched, economic inequality – people use flip phones now, TV anchors cheer a dozen new billionaires, an unhoused couple cooks hotdogs at a camp by a fancy cafe (gasp!). Everyone...

Jackpot! is a Jackie Chan movie desperately in need of Jackie Chan.
An homage to the great international action comedy star from screenwriter Rob Yescombe, a video game writer-designer now turning to the big screen, this over-the-top frenetic stew not only lacks Chan to make it hum, it also lacks any sense of credibility in order to keep us engaged with its absurd premise.
Set in a decaying Los Angeles (Atlanta subs for it) in 2026 — two years from now, when the filmmakers apparently think America has gone to hell — we are introduced right from the start to the Grand Lottery, a contest that promises untold riches to whoever can survive actually winning it and avoid being killed by the rabid citizenry. But if they succeed in knocking you off within 24 hours, they will get the money promised by your ticket. Think of it as sort of a comedic Purge. Thus,...

Fair or not, streaming movies often have an air of lower expectations and a lower threshold for what’s deemed to be a good or bad movie. Sometimes known as “the Netflix bump,” a movie that would likely otherwise be negatively reviewed gets a softer review because you were able to watch it from the comfort of your home, didn’t have to drive to a theater, or pay for tickets and snacks, making the overall experience better, even if the movie itself wasn’t so great. But even with those caveats, Jackpot!, Amazon’s latest Prime Video release, still doesn’t come close to measuring up in any sense of the phrase.
Jackpot! Plot
Jackpot! takes place in a near-future Los Angeles, 2030. The New Government has created a Grand Lottery. It works much like the Powerball or any other lottery game, but with one very important catch: if someone manages to kill the winner,...

Yes, John Cena is still a little traumatized by the streaking bit he participated in at this year’s Oscars. But at this point, it’s mostly because he wished he could’ve had his rear end on full display, rather than wear a modesty cloth.
The actor and wrestler stopped by “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Tuesday night in support of his new film “Jackpot!” — which hits Prime Video on Thursday, August 15 — but alas, that didn’t mean a reunion with Kimmel himself. The host is currently taking a summer break, and Jeff Goldblum is guest hosting this week.
And, just before his time with Cena concluded, Goldblum made a point to ask if Cena holds any resentment for the bit, considering he lightly scolded Kimmel on stage for it at the time.
“Jeff it is so good to see you, but I’m gonna stay here until they shut...
