The Apothecary Diaries has won over the hearts of its audience not because of over-the-top action scenes or muscle-bulging characters but because of its unique protagonists and intrinsic plot. Of course, the protagonist, Maomao, has to be given foremost credit in this regard.
Despite being dropped in the middle of the Emperor’s consorts, Maomao isn’t interested in the inner palace’s glamour. What interests her are the weird and often poisonous herbs that she uses to create various medicines.

Norihiro Naganuma is the director of season 1 of The Apothecary Diaries. He is also the director of Ancient Magnus’ Bride, Yowamushi Pedal movie, and more. In an interview, Naganuma had a discussion about Maomao since she is a morally upstanding character but with nuance and depth which makes her compelling to watch.

The romance between Maomao and Jinshi in The Apothecary Diaries has been entertaining for the audience and the supporting characters alike. The dynamic between the leading protagonist and the deuteragonist has created a huge stir in the anime community for their push-and-pull. Their respect and curiosity for each other are slowly growing into romantic attraction and love. The slow-burn romance and natural connection are what get the audience and the other characters going.

Considering they are the central characters, one would think either would be the director’s favorite. However, according to the director of The Apothecary Diaries, Gaoshun is his favorite character for a peculiar reason that has to do with bearing witness to the slow-growing romance of Maomao and Jinshi. The Apothecary Diaries has some of the most entertaining and interesting characters. A lot of their actions are highly exaggerated, like Maomao’s eccentricities and Jinshi’s flirtatiousness. Some characters might be dubbed as useless and rather fillers in the grand scheme of the plot. One such person is Guen, or as Maomao calls him, the Quack Doctor. The man is often used as comedic relief in The Apothecary Diaries and doesn’t actually have much stake in the storyline beyond just existing.

Some fans of The Apothecary Diaries have expressed dislike for him due to his lack of purpose other than being the comic relief. His position as a court physician is also pretty moot with Maomao’s skills being much more superior to his. However, Natsu Hyuuga could potentially fix his character if they would just address the real reason behind him becoming a court physician.

Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers ahead for episode 24 of The Apothecary Diaries!
The Apothecary Diaries is a whirlwind of emotions we love to sit through but some of the most unexpected characters had a connection we didn’t expect at all. Most of the characters of The Apothecary Diaries are lovable and humorous but two people in particular make everyone’s blood boil, Lakan and Fengxian. But since the narrator unquestionably takes Maomao’s side, it’s mostly her perspective. However, when these two finally had their story revealed and reunited, there wasn’t a dry eye tuning into The Apothecary Diaries.

Back in the day, I was one of those anime fans who'd collect anime magazines and cut out the artwork so I could tape it to my closet door. This was back before streaming services and me having access to anime conventions full of vibrant wallscrolls and artist alleys. Basically, anime magazines were the only way I could get a hold of anime art... unless I used my high school's computer lab to print out grainy images. That said, one magazine I did Not cut apart was Newtype. With it's thicker covers, plastic wrap and free anime DVD to give us a taste of a new series that, gasp, wasn't airing on Toonami, reading Newtype felt like a must-have anime experience in the early 2000s. Full of exclusive features, interviews and other anime goodies, the magazine felt like a physical version of what we get from anime websites today. Before,...

Dandadan is topping one chart after another with its unique plot and execution. Yukinobu Tatsu has created a series that is miles apart from any typical Shonen anime/manga. This is also why fans find Dandadan a refreshing addition to the overwhelming list of series consisting of almost the same topics.
However, Dandadan is not a pioneer in this regard. Several other series offer a mix of genres, a noticeable anime amongst them being The Apothecary Diaries. Despite not belonging to the Shonen genre, both its anime and manga have enraptured its audience.

The Apothecary Diaries goes behind the pretty picture of the Imperial Palace to show the ugliness of internal politics. The protagonist, Maomao, isn’t concerned with wooing every man in her vicinity and concentrates on establishing an apothecary while also using her knowledge of herbs and illnesses to solve the mysteries of the Inner Court.
However, since Maomao is more obsessed with her interests and the mysteries around her, she often mistreats herself. She even tries her best not to attract any attention to herself. A technique that has worked a bit too well, to the point that even fans of the series have forgotten that she is a bona fide hidden beauty.

With the rise in popularity of live-action adaptations, anime fans remain skeptical about the medium doing justice to the original manga and anime. Several live-action adaptations fall under the curse of dulling down the originally vibrant anime aesthetics that make the series charming. Norihiro Naganuma, the director of The Apothecary Diaries, emphasizes the use of colors and expresses the success of an adaptation.

If this formula is followed by the live-action film adaptation of Naruto, set to be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, it might actually work out and respect the source material. The Apothecary Diaries is an outlier in 2024, wherein a lot of anime fans thought it would quickly be forgotten and shoved under the carpet but it turned out to be one of the top 5 anime to air in 2024. And now the fans eagerly wait for the second season of The Apothecary Diaries, which has already been announced.

From a quick glance at the synopsis, it may seem like a straight-forward show but fans haven’t recovered after watching one mystery after another that was presented in the first season. Problem is, there were many plot holes, so fans expect the creators to clear that up in season 2. First beginning as a novel series in 2011, most of the popularity that the first season of The Apothecary Diaries gained was because of the novel’s prominence and the anime’s animation quality. And the director explains how.

For outliving its contemporaries as well as some famous titles of the next generation, One Piece has gained unparalleled prominence in the anime industry. It has been more than two decades and the manga has continued to grow in worldwide popularity. The previous year proved to be a blessing in this respect. Due to the live-action adaptation and the Gear 5 commotion, the popularity of the series reached new heights.

Whenever a manga becomes popular because of an exciting development, the sudden spike in popularity is temporary. The momentum returns to a more steady state soon after the excitement has settled down. This is seemingly what happened with One Piece as this month, the manga didn’t even make it to the top ten best-selling manga. This is bound to be a shocker for any fan of the series.

If you’ve been following Jujutsu Kaisen, you’d know how naughty the character of Gojo Satoru can get with his words. The strongest sorcerer is a tease in many ways and loves to torment most of the characters in the show, particularly Utahime, although we’d love to see more of her.
The English voice actor for Gojo Satoru, Kaiji Tang, also voices Jinshi from The Apothecary Diaries. Jinshi often teases the protagonist, Maomao, to get a reaction out of her.
