Isaac M. Baranoff once came up with the idea of playing a perverted host in a robe smoking a pipe, recalling pornographic comics as if they were high-art masterpieces. This concept was scrapped for budgetary reasons, and Baranoff decided instead to review pornographic comics as part of this show.
In 2016, Isaac M. Baranoff announced that he was rebooting the series, and would be changing the series name from "Comix from the Underground" to "The Comix Scrutinizer" in order to cover more comics. Reasons cited for the reboot included Baranoff's dissatisfaction with the original episodes, especially the first season, in which the Comix Scrutinizer did not have the same personality as later episodes. Baranoff has also said that he disliked the early episodes' inconsistent character portrayal and he found some of the character portrayal to be too derivative of other web series.
The characterization of The Comix Scrutinizer was different in the first original season (under the title Comix from the Underground) from later episodes.
In 2019, Baranoff revealed that the entirety of the series' episodes were lost, as several hard drives' worth of footage was wiped out, and that the entire series would never be released again.
