Dark Frames, a new distribution company dedicated to bringing high-quality, non-Bollywood Indian films to North American and international audiences through theatrical and digital channels, will release its first title, Unfreedom, on May 29, it was announced today by Dark Frames’ founder, Raj Amit Kumar. Veteran film marketer and distributor Mark Urman of Paladin is partnering with Dark Frames to lead the marketing and distribution of its release slate. Dark Frames will also partner with Film Buff to distribute Unfreedom at the same time on Cable VOD and other digital platforms.
Unfreedom juxtaposes two powerful and unflinching contemporary stories about religious fundamentalism and intolerance. Shifting between New York and New Delhi, one tale follows a Muslim terrorist who kidnaps a liberal Muslim scholar in order to silence him, while the other charts the travails of a young woman whose devout father tries to force her into an arranged marriage, which she resists...

British journalist Ashanti Omkar of the BBC Asian Network and Indian cinema expert to BBC London and BBC West Midlands, and photographer Akin Aworan flew to the Zurich Film Festival, 10th anniversary, to get the lowdown on the India “New World View” section for Galatta cinema magazine in India and we have some highlights!
The fanfare for the India section began with a Bollywood flash mob, at SihlCity, a vibrant cinema and mall and a deliciously catered Indian party.
For the festival, the World View sections with a spotlight on India, the focus was on independent cinema, as opposed to the “woods” of Indian cinema, like Bollywood and Kollywood. These special selections were curated by Georg Bütler, the senior programmer of the festival. Despite not ever having been to India, Georg was able to find and astutely select 12 of the best films from the subcontinent.

Year 2013 turned out to be an unprecedented year for Indian indie films! While Bollywood continued to break all records riding high on star power, Indies also began a humble yet significant journey towards finding mainstream distribution. The Lunchbox piggybacked on star director Karan Johar as presenter while Ship of Theseus found support from filmmaker Kiran Rao. Shahid was backed by Disney-utv and B.A. Pass was acquired by Bollywood producer Bharat Shah. While these films enjoyed successful run in international film festivals, they also got acceptance from theatre-going audiences back home.

A small independent film has been quietly winning hearts and awards in the festival circuit. The latest victory for Kamal K.M.’s I.D. is winning the Black horse competition at the 3rd Ars Independent International Film Festival in Poland.
Not many are aware that Resul Pookutty, best known as the Oscar-winning sound designer for Slumdog Millionaire, turned producer for I.D. with five other friends (called Collective Phase One). His ambition for production encompasses the plan of opening a production house of his own very soon.
Resul Pookutty, the producer, chats with Nandita Dutta:
Why did you think of getting into production and forming Collective Phase One?
It was never in my mind to start a production house, it just happened. Rajeev Ravi, Madhu Neelakandan and I were together at the Ftii. So one day Rajeev called up and said that a junior of ours, Kamal, has written a film...

G eetanjali Thapa came to Mumbai for a film opposite Ranvir Shorey that never happened. Destiny had a better plan for the talented actor. She made her debut with Kamal K.M.’s “I.D.” which won her two awards internationally: Best Actor at Los Angeles Film Festival and ImagineIndia International Film Festival. After “I.D.”, she has acted in “Monsoon Shootout” that premiered at Cannes this year. Her success story doesn’t stop at that; Thapa will soon be seen in Oscar winning director Danis Tanovic’s Indian project.
Geetanjali Thapa talks about her journey:
Tell us about your journey from Sikkim to Mumbai.
After I finished my school in Sikkim, I was in Calcutta for my graduation. I used to do a bit of modelling there. I had just moved to Delhi for further studies when I got an offer for a film and I landed up in Bombay. That film got shelved.

Geetanjali Thapa in I.D.
Geetanjali Thapa won the award for Best Performance in the Narrative Competition for Kamal K.M’s I.D. at the Los Angeles Film Festival that concluded recently.
Thapa plays a carefree young woman living in Mumbai named Charu who is visited by a painter who’s been hired to do a touch-up to one of her apartment walls. But when the man falls unconscious, Charu discovers that she alone must attend to this stranger, first getting him to the hospital and then trying to discover who he is.
The Jury stated: Thapa’s performance is recognized in part for her ability to win over the audience’s empathy for a character that initially lacks, indeed even resists, empathy. Rarely conversational, her ability to speak volumes with gesture and silence is a revelation to the audience. With an onscreen presence that commands attention, we see her rising...

To comment on Indian cinema growing beyond the Bollywood aesthetic that has defined it for so many years would be almost passé at this point. With films like Gangs of Wasseypur crashing onto the scene with great flourishes of gritty violence and a complete absence of sweeping shots of colorfully dressed dancers, it has become clear that the international perspective on Indian cinema is maturing along with the filmmaking coming out of the region itself. I.D., the first feature by director Kamal K.M. continues this trend of using a stark realism that is antithetical to big Bollywood -- aiming to reveal a very different version of India. I.D. stars Geetanjali Thapa as Charu, a young woman living in Mumbai. At the start of the...

I.D. directed by Kamal K.M. is one of the twelve films selected to compete at 3 Continents Film Festival in Nantes, France.
The films tells the story of a young graduate Charu who shares a flat in Mumbai. One day when a laborer who has come to repaint a sitting room wall collapses, she has no choice but to take events in her hand, even though the painter has no identity papers on him.
“Shot in almost documentary-like conditions, her journey hints at the style of Filipino Brillante Mendoza in John John which undelined the stark contrats betwen Manila’s slum districts and the city’s international hotels. Without empathy or irony, Kamal K.M. focuses on Charu’s growing determination to discover the man’s identity–a determination doubtlessly driven by a humane impulse but also by the imperative need to confront her own.
