We’re in the last remaining days of October, meaning many of us will be trying to cram in as many horror movies as possible between now and Halloween. For my last round of Shudder picks this month, I thought I’d go with a much looser theme: there’s nothing that ties these titles together except that they’re really good movies I think you should watch. Some you may recognize, others may be less familiar to you. All of them are worth streaming on Shudder.
The Bride of Frankenstein (1935, dir. James Whale) It’s not officially October without the Universal Monsters, so big thanks to Shudder for adding most of the big ones to their expanding library of streaming options. There’s no wrong choice when it comes to the classics, but I’ll make the case that Universal never got better than The Bride of Frankenstein, James Whale...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Phase 4 Films. Director/writer: Joseph O'Brien. Cast: David Hayter, Maria del Mar, Casey Hudecki and Frank Moore. Devil's Mile is the first feature film from writer Joseph O'Brien (Fresh Meat) as director. Both, Devil's Mile and Fresh Meat (2012) blend genres, with this one going for more mystery and horror, over comedy. Devil's Mile is the second film this reviewer has seen, recently, which deals with a circular curse. Characters go in circles, with no obvious way out of a complex trap. Still, one character manages to square off with Satan, late in the picture. Earlier, O'Brien brings some Japanese horror influences to the film as seen in the antagonist's awkward movements and sounds. Pacing issues slow down the middle portions of the film, while lighting effects amplify the horror elements. Devil's Mile is a slow-burning indie production that offers a mostly entertaining time.

The New Zealand Film Commission is getting out of the business of selling feature films and shorts internationally as part of a wide revamp of the agency.s structure and mission.
The Nzfc will seek to place the new and recent films it represents with sales agents and is hiring a consultant with sales experience to manage the transition. That process will start on April 1.
The organisation, which has 129 films under its care, will continue to handle sales of at least some of the older titles. The Commission has sold the films it produced or invested in for more than 40 years, including An Angel at My Table, Bad Taste, Vigil, Once Were Warriors, Sleeping Dogs, Smash Palace, The Navigator, The World's Fastest Indian and, more recently, Black Sheep, Eagle vs Shark, Two Little Boys and Fresh Meat.

Dave Gibson, one of the country’s most high profile producers, has been appointed chief executive of the New Zealand Film Commission.
Gibson replaces Graeme Mason who took up his new role at Screen Australia a couple of weeks ago, the equivalent government agency of New Zealand’s nearest neighbour.
Gibson is both good-natured and not afraid to speak out. His move from the private sector into government will surprise some because of his fierce independence.
His decision to take up this role also represents a move from television into film. He has produced several feature films but for most of his career has working in television across a range of formats and also interactive systems for museums across the world.
The Nzfc is responsible for directly funding film not television (handled by New Zealand On Air) although it does administer the Screen Production Incentive Fund, which caters for blue chip television drama.

Here’s a belated review for Danny Mulheron’s Fresh Meat, which premiered at the festival last month. Evan Dickson chimes in with his mixed thoughts: “Fresh Meat is a good deal of fun. We're back with Part 2 of our 2013 Tribeca Film Festival horror roundup, and while the first sampling provided well defined entertainment, leaving me with no question as to my feelings, this second round left me scratching my head and wondering if I could verbalize my thoughts.
When was the last time you saw a movie and were asked immediately after, “Did you like it?” Probably all the time, right? If the person asking the question doesn’t agree with you, he might ask why, and that takes some thought. This latest batch of reviews required a bit of marinating in my brain juices before I could rant adequately. But I'm ready now so let’s dive in…
Fresh Meat
It’s a common theme. Take a band of criminals and a seemingly happy family and throw them into a hostile confrontation, the results of which will determine who is truly monstrous.

There’s a certain expectation that comes with attending a horror-comedy with a ridiculously on-the-nose title. And in that respect, “Fresh Meat” delivers on its promise as a deliriously off-the-wall splatterfest with absolutely zero pretension. You could guess that Kiwi director Danny Mulheron was a Peter Jackson acolyte (he worked on Jackson’s puppet classic “Meet The Feebles”) by just closing your eyes and listening: the smack of slabs of meat slapping against each other, the screams of proudly ridiculous mega-acting, and the perfectly-calibrated physical violence that suggests a silly symphony of onscreen slapstick are all strengths that used to be exhibited in the work of Mr. Jackson, before he traded his integrity for some elf ears in Hollywood. This restless stab-fest lacks nuance and depth for the most part, which the film wears as a strength during its breathlessly paced first forty-five minutes. Two clans are in a collision...

Some guilty pleasures sound better on paper, but the New Zealand horror-comedy "Fresh Meat" delivers on its outrageous premise. The movie, which had its world premiere at the Hawaii International Film Festival before making its way to the Tribeca Film Festival's midnight section this week, revolves around a ridiculous scenario that keeps broadening its crazy ingredients as it moves along: A group of convicts on the lam break into a suburban household and take the family hostage, only to learn that the demented man of the house (Temuera Morrison) has turned his whole family into cannibals. In between spurts of gunplay and violent physical comedy, bodies are mutilated and devoured in equal measures, while the only apparently sane member of the household, college gal (Hannah Tevita) falls for badass criminal Gigi (Kate Elliott). That the burgeoning lesbian romance takes place against the backdrop of a crazy rituals and ample gore...

So if Fresh Meat taught me anything about New Zealand’s culture it’s that all the guys are perpetually horny, most of the females are lesbians, most of the police officers are witless morons, and most of the cannibals are religious cult-worshipping natives. Would any New Zealanders like to refute that? Please, I’m all ears, I know nothing about Maori culture and island rituals, except if I want to distract the Tazmianian Devil (whom I can only assume is the island mascot) all I have to do is toss a kiwi bird in the other direction and he’ll chase it. Don’t you watch cartoons? Tazmanian Devils love snacking on kiwi birds!
Aw hell, this isn’t some educational country promoting film though, so I’m just going to assume Danny Mulheron’s B-Movie horror throwback is all fictional, right down to the cannibalistic family who have...

Fresh Meat, a ghoulish comedy out of New Zealand, begins with a band of criminals seeking cover from the cops after breaking out of jail. Their getaway car tears into the garage of what seems to be a typical middle class home, where this gang aims to take the Maori family who lives there hostage. But the hunters become the hunted when these crooks uncover this family's got more than skeletons in their closet. Celebrated kiwi actor Temuera Morrison (Once Were Warriors) stars as Hemi Crane, husband, father, and merciless cannibal. As you can see from the trailer above, this horror-comedy has got some slick swagger and a bonkers brand of humor. But beyond the midnight movie-styled mayhem, there seems to be a subversive satirical element at play. Think about it, a bunch of strangers come crashing into someone's home, threatening to take it over? But instead of having their...

New Zealand always tends to make really fun and crazy horror comedies, and there's one set to screen at the Tribeca Film Festival called Fresh Meat. The first trailer has been released for the Danny Mulheron-directed film, and it looks like an entertaining dark cannibal comedy.
The story follows "a dysfunctional gang of criminals force a suburban family to help them lay low after a heist, but the hunter becomes the hunted when their hostages turn out to be cannibals." It's a brilliant twist, and I hope I get a chance to see this movie. For those of you looking for another good reason to watch the film, you'll be happy to know that it stars Temuera Morrison, who played Jango Fett in the Star Wars prequels.

I'm not sure if it is good or bad that mainstream film festivals segregate horror films to special "Midnight" sections. On the one hand, these special sections are rarely in competition, but on the other hand, it gets them in front of an audience that may not otherwise be exposed to it.
But I digress. The Tribeca Film Festival announced today its Midnight Movies selections, marking a rebranding of the film block from Cinemania. Check out the lineup below:

Shock has discovered a lil' trailer for the horror-comedy, Fresh Meat, hailing from New Zealand. The film comes to us from director Danny Mulheron whose career in the genre reaches back to Peter Jackson's Meet the Feebles in which he played...Heidi the Hippo!
Since then, Mulheron's been balancing various acting and directing gigs (mostly television in the latter).
Mulheron's latest goes like this: When the Tan gang’s prison breakout goes violently wrong, they need a hideout in a hurry. But how were the Tans to know that this particular family have reintroduced some very old-fashioned cuisine to their dining table? Will the Tans escape the trap, or is there gangster in the casserole tonight?
Kate Elliott, Hanna Tevita, Nicola Kawana, Jack Shadbolt and Leand Macadaan also star. Head inside for a look at...
