San Sebastian — Released Sept. 21, Netflix’s latest data dump for first half 2024 estimated that non-English stories were “hugely popular,” making up early a third of all its viewing. Titles from Spain led the way, Netflix claimed, citing “Society of the Snow”, “The Asunta Case” (31 million) and “Raising Voices” (25 million).
Little wonder that at €1 billion, Spain ranked second in Europe, after the U.K., in 2023 in global streamer investment on original content, according to a European Audiovisual Observatory report this month.
Now a just presented report on Sunday at the San Sebastián Film Festival has added another wrinkle to estimates of the vast moneys moved by Spain’s film and TV industries.

San Sebastian — From when it began to incorporate Spanish TV series in its Official Selection – think 2017’s “The Plague” or 2020’s double whammy of “Patria” and “Riot Police” – San Sebastián has used its first Saturday to debate TV issues.
This time round, a panel highlighted crime series, featuring Movistar Plus+’s Susana Herreras, Laura Sarmiento, showrunner of Netflix hit “Intimacy” and lead writer on “Burning Body,” and Elías León Siminiani, co-creator of the 2017 docuseries “El caso Asunta (Operación Nenúfar)” which inspired the 2024 Netflix fiction series, “El Caso Asunta.”
Six takes on the panel discussion:
Spanish Crime Series Boom
The panel was entitled in Spanish “The Spanish Crime Series Boom.” That seems an understatement. According to Variety research, through Sept. 13 this year, seven Spanish titles hit No. 1 on Netflix’s Global Non-English TV series charts, occupying the top-charting position for a total 15 of the period’s total 35 weeks. Netflix’s all-out assault on the Spanish-language content market is paying off.
The latest Netflix ‘What We Watched’ data dump — or ‘engagement report’ in the streamer’s lexicon — shows seven Spanish-language TV shows, including Money Heist spin-off Berlin, were in the 100 most-watched for the January to June period this year. A further three films made the top 100 in that chart, including Society of the Snow (aka La Sociedad de la Niece) at number three with 103.8 million views.
Netflix has made Spanish-language content, and specifically originals produced out of its huge studios just outside of Spain’s capital Madrid, a major priority in the battle for international streaming subscribers. The strategy appears to be paying off when comparing this latest data set with previous incarnations.
Berlin, which stars Pedro Alonso in the titlular role as a master thief, was the ninth-most-watched TV show with 48.5 million views. The show, a prequel to...

“Bridgerton,” “Bridgerton,” “Bridgerton.” That’s what Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular TV (English) list looks like now.
Season 3 of the Shondaland period drama has now entered the streamer’s all-time list at number 10, booting “Baby Reindeer” and joining “Bridgerton” Seasons 1 and 2 on the leaderboard.
“Bridgerton” is the only series with three seasons on Netflix’s top 10 all-time list. “Stranger Things” is well-represented with Seasons 3 and 4, but its first two seasons came out before Netflix began to share viewership statistics.
Like many of its biggest shows, Netflix split “Bridgerton” Season 3 into two parts. Part 1 debuted on May 16; Part 2 launched on June 13.
Netflix’s top 10 is based on number of views over a TV season or a film’s first 91 days of availability — both “Bridgerton” Season 3 halves still have plenty of time to rack up more views in pursuit of the preceding seasons. “Baby Reindeer” has just a few days left before Netflix’s self-imposed cutoff.

Back in 2018, the world saw the first season of Netflix’s Élite, a teen show that explored a number of mature themes. These included the struggles of defining one’s sexuality, class inequality, drug use, other illicit activities and, finally sexual misconduct and abuse.
Moreover, Élite proved people’s interest in Spanish original series, and this trend has been continued not only by Money Heist and Cable Girls, but also by the new top-tier show that raises international and socially important issues and does it impeccably.
It starts by introducing us to the trio of high school friends, Alma, Greta and Nata. Their calm life full of juicy gossip and jokes is about to be changed completely, as Alma secretly hangs a banner in their school that says there is a rapist hiding there.

I guess these days everyone is quite familiar with the social media term “toxic couple.” It is all about two people who shouldn’t be together but still end up being together and instead parting ways. In such a case, either one of them or both are always doing things behind their partner’s back. And when they should just walk away, they cling to their toxic partner for reasons scientists are still exploring. Jokes aside, it seems that these couples are stuck in a cycle of trauma from which they can’t walk away. Take Nata and Alberto, for example, in the Netflix series Raising Voices. Nata knows deep down that Alberto isn’t good for her, but she keeps giving him second chances, forgiving him over and over again. And Alberto? Well, he’s got this habit of saying sorry and treating Nata like a princess every now and then,...

Why are men’s abuse, infidelity, and molestation often normalized? It’s as if they are just children who don’t have a clue that they shouldn’t be doing these things, and we as women have to live with this and learn how to move past the trauma so that we don’t hurt men’s egos or suffer severe consequences if we raise our voices against such behavior. The new Netflix series “Raising Voices” dives into the #MeToo culture and the power of social media in helping girls come forward about the traumas they experience. If they can’t confront their molester face-to-face, perhaps sharing their experiences on social media can make more people stand by them. But it’s not that easy, is it? This series tells the stories of Alma (Nicole Wallace), Greta (Clara Galle), Berta (Teresa de Mera), Nata (Aicha Villaverde), and other girls who...

There’s a saying that teachers are our mentors and guides in life who teach us right from wrong and help us grow. After our parents, teachers play a crucial role in shaping our lives. But what if these teachers are not as good as they seem? What if they hide their true nature behind a mask, pretending to be supportive while disguising their intentions? This can be very confusing for young minds who rely on these very teachers to distinguish between right and wrong because they believe in them. This is dangerous because these teachers often take advantage of this trust to exploit innocent students. In the Netflix series Raising Voices, a history teacher named Juan Lopez Sanchez has a history of abusing students, but no one spoke up against him for a long time. Alma, one of his students, finally found the courage to stand up to him...

With a new month comes many new choices for Netflix viewers, and three of the choices stand out. June looks excellent on Netflix.
There is something for everyone and every situation, including Detective Pikachu and The Lego Movie for kids, The Divergent Movie for sci-fi fans, and the Conjuring trilogy for horror fans.
Another good option is the Godzilla Minus One movie, which, as Monsters and Critics reported, just dropped on Netflix.
All those are good options, but three top picks should not be missed: one for drama fans, a throwback for sci-fi fans, and one of the best coming-of-age films ever made.
The first is a Spanish offering named Raising Voices. It is an all-too-familiar tale of sexual assault that immediately grips viewers. Raising Voices, Episode 1, is streaming on Netflix today and should not be missed.

What if you told someone one of your deepest, darkest secrets—the secret you’ve been hiding for so long because you’re scared that if you reveal it, people might judge you? They might start looking at you differently or call you a liar, completely dismissing your feelings and emotions. You end up questioning why you bothered to come forward with it. Why did you make the mistake of trusting others? That’s exactly what happened to Berta in the Netflix Spanish series Raising Voices. Coming out with the truth takes courage, and when it all goes to waste, it’s the most horrifying thing ever. Berta faced those consequences when she finally trusted Alma with her secret. The reason she left her school was that the history teacher had been molesting her, and she could not take a stand against it. What happened to Berta in the end?...

Series like Raising Voices on Netflix should be made more often! Through the powerful portrayal of each character, this series vividly shows us what it’s like to live in a world where people have forgotten what safety feels like. The very men who are supposed to make us feel secure—our husbands, boyfriends, or teachers—turn out to be the most despicable human beings imaginable. When these men fail to provide a safe space, what can we expect from others? Let’s familiarize ourselves with these characters to truly understand each character’s struggles and perspectives. They make us question the very fabric of our society and challenge us to demand better and stand against our abusers by raising our voices.

When I started watching Raising Voices, I had no idea what it was going to be about. However, a little into the first episode, I was reminded of the American series Grand Army. Also a Netflix original, Grand Army, tells the story of teenagers in a very similar manner to the Spanish-language adaptation, but in a more graphic manner. Raising Voices, tells the story of Alma, a 17-year-old girl who is struggling with teenhood until one day, her life completely changes. Raising Voices is a thought-provoking TV series that allows young audiences to answer the question, “What is assault?” Through four leading characters, the series explores the many different ways young girls are treated and how they can face these terrible challenges. Many times, girls are forced to believe that they’re the problem, and they put themselves in situations where they get assaulted. The series ethically explores these thoughts...

Raising Voices is a Spanish-language Netflix original adapted from a novel that is a coming-of-age story that consists of all your usual teenage-drama tropes but at the same time stands out from the crowd as a thought-provoking piece of media. It’s a show that predominantly tells the story of Alma, a girl who is different from the rest of her classmates and is finding it hard to be a regular 17-year-old. Her life is completely turned upside down when she learns that one of her close friends was assaulted at her school. However, the story doesn’t simply focus on Alma; we have three more protagonists: Berta, Greta, and Nata. Greta is Alma’s childhood best friend, while Nata is a newer friend from school. Berta, on the other hand, used to be a good friend of Alma’s until she went through some trouble at school and left,...

The series begins at its climax when Alma puts up a banner on the school gates with the words, “Be warned, this school is hiding a rapist.” Though the show is primarily Alma’s story, it actually gives us insight into a few other girls in her life. Berta, Nata, and Greta are each facing terrifying challenges in their school lives, and Raising Voices ties all of their stories together through Alma, their unhinged friend. The show attempts to depict problematic youth culture and to show young girls that they should be able to speak up when something terrible has happened to them. It places heavy emphasis on the fact that young girls blame themselves for anything that’s happened to them out of fear of judgment.

It’s season finale time for networks, but Netflix, naturally, still has plenty of brand new TV and shows coming in May.
Jeff Daniels makes his TV return in the David E. Kelley series “A Man in Full.” That six-episode series is based on the bestselling book of the same name by Tom Wolfe. Per a press release: “When Atlanta real estate mogul Charlie Croker faces sudden bankruptcy, political and business interests collide as Charlie defends his empire from those attempting to capitalize on his fall from grace.” The series will also star Tom Pelphrey, Diane Lane, Lucy Liu, William Jackson Harper, Aml Ameen, Sarah Jones, Jon Michael Hill and Chanté Adams.
Additionally, comedy fans can get excited for a new special series from John Mulaney. The comedian is hosting a multi-night event, “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA,” that looks to be part interview show and part man-on-the-street hijinks.
