Steve McQueen is back in the director’s chair for an alternately compelling and cliché-peppered WWII drama. Here’s our Blitz review.
It’s worth mentioning now that this isn’t 2011 “cop-killer versus killer-cop” Jason Statham vehicle of the same name, because these two films could hardly be more different. If video rentals were still around, we’d be seeing a lot of very confused fans from both camps.
Parts of Blitz (2024), though, are just as thrilling as watching the Stath run around after a London-based serial killer, if you can imagine such a thing. Using a conflicted mother (Saoirse Ronan)’s hunt for her runaway eight-year-old as a setup, McQueen’s latest is something of an anthology film disguised as a conventional A-to-b drama. On his travels, young George (Elliott Heffernan) encounters folk from across the capital’s social strata, from a kindly air raid warden (Benjamin Clementine) to...

Spanish actress and director Paz Vega (Spanglish, Sex and Lucia, Rambo: Last Blood, The Oa, Netflix heist drama Kaleidoscope), who wrote and stepped behind the camera for her directorial debut Rita, which world premiered during the 77th edition of the Locarno Film Festival this summer, enjoys writing and directing, adding another layer to her creative endeavors. She made the comments during a Tuesday keynote interview at the Iberseries & Platino Industria conference and market in Madrid that was titled “Changing Roles: Paz Vega and Her Transition From the Art of Acting to the Art of Directing.” She recently said in a THR interview that Billy Wilder, Francis Ford Coppola, and Federico Fellini were among her role models.

Stephen King is inarguably one of the most adapted authors in the world. The reigning overlord of the horror genre has seen his work translated to film and TV almost continually since his first novel, Carrie, was adapted in 1976. While he’s had his ups and downs in terms of success in those venues, it’s almost a certainty that the King adaptations will continue as the author himself keeps working well into his sixth decade as a published writer.
Naturally, most of the adaptations of King’s work focus on his horror or horror-adjacent output: just about everything from 1,000-page behemoths like the post-apocalyptic The Stand to 10-page short stories like the single-setting monster tale “The Boogeyman” have found their way to the screen. But while filmmakers and creators gravitate toward the King material that they think will scare audiences – after all, that’s his brand – some of the...

Less than three months after being tapped CEO of Banijay France, Alexia Laroche-Joubert, a well-known industry figure, has enlisted Authentic Media, a leading French premium scripted banner that will join the “Peaky Blinders” production-distribution powerhouse.
The acquisition of Authentic Media, who produced hit French adaptations of series such as “Rita” and “This is Us,” took a couple of years to materialize and will further bolster Banijay France’s portfolio of scripted labels. Producer Jason Blum believes what sets Five Nights at Freddy’s apart from other adaptations is “the care that was taken with the story to create something based on a beloved game.” Universal Pictures’ new featurette is dedicated to the game’s fans, and director/co-writer Emma Tammi says that every creative decision they made was with the goal of doing justice to the game and its massive fan base.
Josh Hutcherson and Elizabeth Lail lead the cast of the horror film. Piper Rubio, Kat Conner Sterling (We Have a Ghost), Mary Stuart Masterson (Blindspot), and Matthew Lillard also star.
Scott Cawthon created the Five Night at Freddy’s game and is involved as a writer and producer. Seth Cuddeback also co-wrote the screenplay, with Bea Sequeira, Russell Binder, Marc Mostman, and Christopher H. Warner executive producing. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop created the film’s animatronic characters.

My favorite scene in “Dig,” the series finale of FX’s Hulu series Reservation Dogs, finds Devery Jacobs’ Elora joining D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai’s Bear sitting by Old Man Fixico’s casket.
Bear is meditating on nothing less than the impermanence of life, which is also what Elora wants to discuss. Specifically, she has to tell Bear that she’s exiting their hometown, departing Okern and going to college. She knows, though, that Bear’s mother (Sarah Podemski’s Rita) has recently told him she’s taking a job in Oklahoma City. Everybody is leaving Bear, and Elora worries about how her friend will take the news.
The emotion is bursting out of Elora. She wants to explain, to apologize, to justify. Bear asks her to pause. She looks at him with concern. He looks down. Pondering. She’s wondering if Bear’s about to break down. We’re wondering if...

Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal tackle a tricky balancing act in their new feature, celebrating the intoxicating lilt of the bossa nova and also investigating the devastating brutality of state terrorism. It’s a testament to their talent as filmmakers that, for the most part, they manage to pull it off.
They Shot the Piano Player centers on a kind of ghost: Francisco Tenório Júnior, a leading light of the thriving Brazilian music scene of the 1960s and ’70s who went missing in 1976, while on tour in Buenos Aires. How this keyboard virtuoso, by all accounts a gentle soul with no political ax to grind, became one of the desaparecidos targeted by Argentina’s oppressive regime is the puzzle that drives the movie.
Structured as a journalist’s search for answers, They Shot the Piano Player combines a fictional framing device with documentary material gathered by Trueba over a period of about 15 years,...

As has been teased for several years, a return to the world of Weeds is in the works.
Initially, a sequel series was in the works at Starz, and now, the revival is set to sprout at Showtime.
Deadline says the series is in early development but that Mary Louise Parker is set to return to headline and executive produce.
Additionally, Showtime is also working on an update of Nurse Jackie, with Edie Falco in line to return.
The Weeds sequel will be written and executive produced by Christian Torpe, creator of the popular Danish series Rita, and would feature Nancy (Parker) in Copenhagen, the outlet reports.
Both series are said to be on the fast-track, with an eye of getting them on the air as early as quarter one of 2024.
However, the deals are still being ironed out, and a potential pickup could be contingent on what happens with the Writers Strike.

Showtime‘s new direction of spinoffs and revivals is underway as a Nurse Jackie and Weeds sequel is now in the works from Lionsgate Television. According to network reps, both series are in early development, with the original leads, Edie Falco and Mary-Louise Parker, set to reprise their starring roles with executive producer credits. Although the projects are still being negotiated, Nurse Jackie will be written and executive produced by Abe Sylvia and Liz Flahive, respectively, reenlisted from the original show. Meanwhile, Weeds will be written and executive produced by Christian Torpe, creator of the popular Danish series Rita, featuring the main character Nancy (Parker) in Copenhagen. A continuation of Weeds has been in the works for years, with a follow-up series previously announced in 2019 by writer Victoria Morrow. It was set to pick up with the Botwin family ten years after the events of the original series in an era of marijuana legalization.

You transcended its origins as an under-the-radar gem on the Lifetime channel to become a huge hit on Netflix. The show’s fan base constantly makes memes about its wild events and shamelessly thirsts after Penn Badgley, even though Joe Goldberg is a possessive monster easily prone to violence. Paul McCartney said he couldn’t quite suppress his “weakness for naughtiness” when he wrote the ending of The Beatles‘ “Lovely Rita.” There was always an erotic aspect behind Paul’s lyrics.
Paul McCartney | Les Lee/Getty Images Paul McCartney said it was amusing that ‘Lovely Rita’ is about someone who loves a parking attendant
In his book The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul wrote that nobody liked parking attendants or meter maids, as they were known in the 1960s. So, Paul thought it would be amusing to write a song about someone in love with one.
Paul based The Beatles’ “Lovely Rita” on a particular meter maid he saw in Portland Place. He recalls her looking slightly military-looking. It’s terrible, but Paul thinks those meter maids were never good-looking. “You never heard anybody say, ‘God, that’s one stunning parking attendant,'” he wrote.

Warning: contains spoilers for The Traitors Episode 1.
New reality series The Traitors involves getting a group of strangers to form judgmental cliques, gossip behind each other’s backs and make accusations of wrongdoing, so yes, it’s a bit ‘shooting fish in a barrel’. Did the BBC even need to hire a castle? Set up cameras in the break room of any given workplace and you’ll get largely the same footage, give or take occasional scenes of giant wicker deer on fire as part of the tasks this lot also have to do to build their up-to-£120,000 prize fund.

The Black Vampire! The most impressive Spanish-language noir restoration yet, Román Viñoly Barreto’s superior serial murder thriller hails from 1953 Argentina. It re-interprets Fritz Lang’s “M” from a different, more emotionally engaging perspective: star Olga Zubarry’s nightclub singer hesitates to tell what she knows about a child-killer, because she might lose custody of her own young daughter. The expressionist noir owes little to Hollywood. Some find it more satisfying than Lang’s classic version. The Film Noir Foundation’s extras are excellent.

None of the scenes that Lena Headey filmed for “Thor: Love and Thunder” made the final cut, but that isn’t stopping former representatives of the “Game of Thrones” star from suing her.
Headey’s former agency, Troika, has filed a lawsuit alleging that the actress owes 1.5 million in unpaid commissions (via Variety), including 500,000 from her “Thor: Love and Thunder” salary. The agency is also seeking a 300,000 commission from the film “9 Bullets” and 650,000 for the scrapped Showtime series “Rita.” Headey had signed on to play the titular character on the show, but Showtime decided not to move forward with it after seeing the pilot.
According to court documents, Headey signed with Troika in 2005, when her longtime agent Michael Duff left his position at Lou Carl Associates to join the agency. Troika merged with James Grant Group in 2017, before being acquired by a private equity firm and rebranded as Ymu...

“Game of Thrones” star Lena Headey is being sued for 1.5 million by her former U.K. agency Troika over unpaid commission fees relating to a number of projects including the upcoming film “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
Troika, which re-branded as Ymu in 2020, claims Headey owes the agency at least 500,000 — equivalent to 7 of her fee — for her earnings on the Marvel movie.
Variety can confirm that Headey does not appear in the final cut of “Thor: Love and Thunder,” which stars Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman. The film is set for release next week.
Reps for Headey and Marvel did not reply to Variety’s requests for comment by publication time.
According to court documents, Headey joined Troika in 2005 after following her personal rep, Michael Duff, there from his previous agency Lou Carl Associates.
Duff co-founded Troika, which in 2017 merged with the James Grant Group. In 2018 the agency was acquired by...

‘7 Days,’ Written and Directed by a Doctor, Is a Touching Pandemic Rom-Com That Actually Shows Covid
Most movies about the pandemic have not directly addressed the actual illness of Covid-19, but most movies aren’t written and directed by real-life doctors. Over the last two years, independent filmmakers have risen to the challenges presented by smaller crews and daily testing, producing inventive takes on remote learning like “Language Lessons,” or provocative livestream thrillers like “Deadstream” and “Dashcam.”
But few have managed to show a character suffering from the effects of Covid, much less in a romantic comedy. Shot in a single location with a two-person cast and set during the first week of the pandemic, “7 Days” is a snappy and scrappy rom-com that doesn’t shy away from the human cost of Covid.
That’s entirely due to director and co-writer Roshan Sethi, who moonlights as an oncologist at one of the country’s top hospitals for nine weeks out of the year.

You can’t remake a Hollywood and Broadway musical classic without breaking a few eggs. Long-time Steven Spielberg collaborator and “Angels in America” Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner knew that from his very first discussions with the director, who came to him in 2017 to adapt the 1957 “West Side Story” musical into a second movie. Their shared goal: make the story and characters deeper, richer, and more authentic to the period, from the history of juvenile delinquency in the ’50s and the San Juan Hill neighborhood razed to build Lincoln Center to the roots of Puerto Rican New York.
While Kushner and Spielberg addressed the Arthur Laurents book and music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim with respect, there was no point in updating the story if they weren’t going to change it. Here’s what they did and why. At this point we assume you know the story: spoilers abound.

After six successful seasons, the producers of Tales from the Crypt decided to try something not many other shows would dare do—relocate to another country.
This was long before the big money, multi-location productions like Game of Thrones. The horror anthology series was looking to take the Crypt Keeper, and the tales he told, to England.
Up until this point Tales from the Crypt had been filmed predominantly in L.A. Filming there was also one of the draws for Hollywood stars—they didn’t need to travel far to be on set, and for a show that prized itself on having star power, this was a crucial advantage. However, this would no longer be the case when production relocated halfway around the world.

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history.Above: 42nd StreetWhile other genres undoubtedly advanced with the dawning of sound technology, the musical is likely the most indebted to the reverberations of this complementary process. More than that, though, the movie musical was fundamentally born with the surge of sound—it simply could not have existed otherwise. And since that time, the musical has indeed been a uniquely cinematic venture, less beholden to conventional narratives and often disposed to experimentations in color, location, camera mobility, production design, and special effects. Especially in its heyday, the so-called “Golden Age” lasting between the mid-1930s and late-‘50s, Hollywood musicals were an enrapturing experience, delighting audiences with spectacle, romance, athleticism, fine performances, and, of course, song and dance. Some of America’s brightest stars sparkled in the musical, while many of...

Some of the more notable additions to the line-up that have been added since it was first announced last week include 2003’s Seabiscuit, the jockey drama starring Tobey Maguire, and the next season of Transformers Rescue Bots Academy, both coming on the first day of the month. And remember, this is far from the full list of new arrivals for August, as it only encompasses what’s been announced so far,...
