F.J. Ossang. Photo by Locarno Festival / Sailas VanettiA punk poet and musician, F.J. Ossang’s shorts and features produced since the early 1980s pull vividly from silent cinema, particularly German Expressionism, as well as American noir, to reinvent cinema's legacy for a new era. His latest movie, 9 Doigts (9 Fingers), which premiered in competition at the Locarno Festival and has now traveled to the International Film Festival Rotterdam, begins as a cryptic gangster film—shot in silken black and white 35mm—before the criminals make a break for a cargo ship, plunging the film in the kind of feverish maritime malaise found in Joseph Conrad’s The Shadow Line, Georges Franju’s 1973 TV adaptation of that novel, and pre-Code tropical hothouses like Safe in Hell (1931).But as beautiful as the setting and photography is—and as delirious as some of the cynical, doom-saying criminals are, each prone to mythopoetic threats...

The world of Doctor Who has changed greatly in the space of just 10 years. The cast and crew have almost completely been replaced since 2005, including a number of new actors to play the errant Time Lord and his companions.
But what has happened to the class of '05? Where are Rose and Mickey now? What is the writer of 'Dalek' up to? And where can you see more work from the director of 'Rose'?
Here it is then, your guide to the main players of Doctor Who series one.
The Cast
After his three-month on-screen stint as the Doctor, Christopher Eccleston's career continued in much the same vein, taking in theatre, interesting television roles and the odd blockbuster.
Post-2005, the Northern actor went Stateside to take on the role of invisible man Claude in the Us series Heroes. From there, he popped up in a very amusing Doctor Who-esque cameo as Dr.

The Honourable Woman reached its dramatic climax tonight (August 21) on BBC Two - but were you satisfied with the denouement of Nessa Stein's story?
How did the series as a whole measure up compared to writer Hugo Blick's previous work - the sublime The Shadow Line or the tragi-comic Sensitive Skin?
Blick's sociopolitical thriller - and Maggie Gyllenhaal's central performance - has received a warm reception from most critics, with Time calling it "absorbing" with a "deliberate pace and cool tone".
The Honourable Woman won't return for second series, says Hugo Blick
Others were more reserved though - The Telegraph noted that its twisty-turny style made The Honourable Woman feel "more like a game of chess than a drama".

The miniseries The Honorable Woman, about an Israeli (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who runs her father's weapons company and deals with the headaches and dangers that go with it, would stand out in any TV year, for its detail, its atmosphere, and the way it toys with the audience's sympathies. But what makes it really unusual is the patience that it requires of viewers. This is 20th century storytelling, easygoing and deliberate, packed with detail, and not afraid to go silent and just observe people doing things, with the understanding that eventually you'll figure out what they're up to and what it all means. As written and directed by Hugo Bick (The Shadow Line, Operation Good Guys), this miniseries is an espionage yarn of sorts, filled with sketchy characters imploring others to trust them, and shot through with a low-key but persistent paranoia of a sort that fans of early '70s...

The summer is often a quiet time for TV as many of the biggest shows are saved for the Autumn. That doesn’t mean that there’s still not a lot to tune into this summer though, and as we wait for the likes of Boardwalk Empire to return, there are plenty of shows for us to tune into over the next few months.
Some of the shows listed below have already started (though are all very easy to find thanks to on demand services like Sky Go and Netflix), while others won’t air until later this month or next, but they’re all must-see small screen viewing experiences for the many rainy days we’ll surely have in July and August.
We couldn’t cover every single new or returning show of course, so if you have any suggestions, we’d love to hear them – and your thoughts...
