Kelly Marcel and Tom Hardy are fitting dance partners for Eddie Brock and Venom’s final go-round in Venom: The Last Dance. The longtime screenwriter turned director has been friends with Hardy since the early 2000s, as they both worked across the street from one another in Southwest London. Marcel was employed at a video rental store, and after hitting it off one day, she soon started writing scenes for Hardy’s theater company that was run out of the first floor of Battersea’s The Latchmere pub. Eventually, Hardy brought Marcel in to do uncredited rewrites on Nicolas Winding Refn’s Bronson (2008), something she’d again do years later on George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).

The long-gestating “Magic: The Gathering” animated series at Netflix is moving forward with a new showrunner.

Terry Matalas is now set as the series’ showrunner, as revealed during Netflix’s annual Geeked Week event. The new take on the series is now in production. The show is produced in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast. Plot details for the new iteration are being kept under wraps.

There had recently been widespread speculation that the show was no longer moving forward at Netflix. Originally announced in 2019, the first iteration of the series was overseen by the Russo brothers of MCU fame. But then Jeff Kline was announced as the new executive producer and creative lead on the show in 2021 after the Russos departed over creative differences, with Brandon Routh being announced as voicing the series lead not long after.

Since then, however, there has been virtually no news about the series.

Netflix is starting again with its animated adaptation of table-top game Magic: The Gathering.

The streamer previously announced a version of the show in 2019 with Joe and Anthony Russo at the helm. The Russos and their team, including head writers Henry Gilroy and Jose Molina, departed early in the process over different visions for how best to adapt the IP. Jeff Kline (Transformers: Prime) took over in August 2021 but he has also now left.

The new showrunner will be Terry Matalas, who was recently named showrunner of Marvel’s Vision series for Disney+.

Brandon Routh was set to voice Gideon Jura in the series, which tells the stories of the Planeswalkers, Magic’s unique magic-wielding heroes and villains. He recently said that the show was scrapped.

Exclusive: On the heels of The Boys prequel Vought Rising getting a series greenlight by Prime Video, the studio behind The Boys franchise, Sony Pictures Television, has re-upped its overall deal with Paul Grellong. An executive producer on The Boys since Season 3, Grellong is showrunner and executive producer on spinoff Vought Rising, starring The Boys‘ Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash, which he also developed and wrote.

Under the new two-year pact with Sony TV, Grellong will continue as an exec producer on The Boys and as EP/showrunner on Vought Rising. He will also continue to develop projects for the independent studio targeting streaming and network platforms.

Somebody seems to have a lot of faith in director James Bamford. After years of working as a stuntman and directing episodes of mostly DC Comics-related TV shows, Hard Home is his fourth film to see release this year. The fact that the previous three, Air Force One Down, Jade, and Shadow Land left a lot to be desired is, of course, another matter.

Here he’s working from a script by Mark Shea Price, whose previous credits consist of shorts such as The Mayans Were Right and Raised by Fish. It opens with Mary jogging through the woods and attracting the attention of a Polaroid-wielding psycho when she stops to check out an old cemetery.

Before the streaming wars reinvented cable yet somehow made it worse, television series didn't need to be ratings giants to enjoy a long life. In point of fact, shows that attracted a consistent audience tended to survive long after whatever pristine new series executives had counted on becoming their next breadwinner inevitably faltered partway into its soon-to-be-short-lived run. (My sympathies to "Terra Nova.")

"Bones" was one such series for Fox. Marvel has tapped “Star Trek: Picard” executive producer Terry Matalas to resurrect Vision, the synthezoid played by Paul Bettany, for a new, untitled Disney+ series set for 2026, Variety has learned exclusively. Bettany will return to the role and Matalas will serve as showrunner.

After Vision died at the hands of Thanos in 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” he returned twice over in 2021’s “WandaVision,” first as a spectral creation by his beloved, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), through magic powered by grief; then as a rebuilt, nuts-and-bolts android with a ghost white appearance and zero memory of his past life. In Don’t Come To L.A., written by Keith Sweet II (Star Trek: Prodigy), when a low-level Los Angeles gangster is assigned to protect one of the hottest rappers in the industry by the crime syndicate security company he works for, he has to learn to navigate both the bloodthirsty gang world and the glitz and glam of the celebrity scene.

“Venom 3” just took a major step towards materializing.

Sony has tapped Kelly Marcel to write the currently untitled sequel, sources confirmed to IndieWire. Marcel co-wrote “Venom” and “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” and has served as a producer on both films. “Venom 3” is still in the early stages of development, but Marcel is writing the screenplay based on a story that she developed with Tom Hardy. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal, and Hutch Parker are also producing. There is no confirmed release date or production timeline.

“Venom 3” will mark Marcel’s directorial debut. She is also known for writing “Cruella,” “Fifty Shades of Grey,” and “Saving Mr. Banks” as well as creating the television series “Terra Nova.”

The 18th Camden International Film Festival on Maine’s mid-coast – an increasingly important destination for documentary filmmakers – wrapped its in-person portion Sunday after announcing a handful of awards.

Day After…, directed by Kamar Ahmad Simon, won the festival’s Harrell Award, chosen from a group of “some of the most significant documentaries of the year.” The film is described as “A philosophical ballad along the rivers of Bangladesh, transporting the rich and poor, young and old, East and West in a century-old paddle steamer.”

“The jury was unanimous in its admiration for this film, in which an old riverboat seems to contain an entire society’s worth of dreamers and hustlers, politicians and radicals,” juror Eric Hynes said, noting that the documentary employs “both hybrid techniques and dogged observational power. This is a dazzling work of nonfiction.”

The jury awarded a special mention to Polaris, another film with a nautical theme.

Simone Kessell (Obi-Wan Kenobi) is joining the second season of Showtime’s Yellowjackets as the adult Lottie Matthews.

The teen version of Lottie was played in season one by Courtney Eaton (Mad Max: Fury Road), who has been upped to series regular in season two.

A New Zealand native, Kessell can currently be seen opposite Ewan McGregor in Obi-Wan Kenobi as Breha Organa, mother to Princess Leia as a child. The premium cable network has enlisted Obi-Wan Kenobi actress Simone Kessell to play the role of the mysterious Lottie Matthews in Yellowjackets’ present-day storyline. The character’s arrival was teased in the season one finale and set off a wave of online casting suggestions for the breakout series.

Courtney Eaton, who plays the 1996-set version of Lottie, has also been promoted to series regular.

The series is based on a collection of short stories from Ken Liu about Uploaded Intelligence — human consciousness uploaded to the Cloud. “Pantheon” is created and written by Craig Silverstein with Liu serving as a consulting producer and Titmouse Inc., animation studio also attached. Exclusive: Starz has put in development a drama series based on the 2011 novel The Madonnas Of Echo Park by Brando Skyhorse, from award-winning playwright Julia Cho, feature writer Kelly Marcel (Venom), producer Aaron Kaplan and his Kapital Entertainment.

The project was bought by the Lionsgate-owned premium network with a significant penalty, part of its focus on content for diverse female audiences. It will be produced by Kapital and Lionsgate Television.

AMC has greenlit “Pantheon,” its first animated series, with an order for two eight-episode seasons.

“Pantheon” is based on a series of short stories by Nebula and Hugo-award winning sci-fi author Ken Liu that center on “Uploaded Intelligence,” or human consciousness that has been uploaded to the cloud. The sci-fi drama’s episodes will be one hour long.

IMDb TV, the free, ad-supported streaming service owned by Amazon, has acquired rights to more than 20 scripted TV titles controlled by Disney’s Direct-to-Consumer & International division.

The roster of shows whose free streaming rights are going to IMDb includes Desperate Housewives, My So-Called Life, White Collar and The Glades, among many others. In the coming months, Lost, Malcolm in the Middle and Ally McBeal will start streaming on IMDb, with Lost and Malcolm having the Amazon platform as their exclusive free streaming home.

In conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the Lost finale on ABC, all 121 episodes of Lost will start streaming on May 1. All 112 episodes of Ally McBeal will be available on April 1 and all 151 episodes of Malcolm in the Middle will hit the platform on June 1.

The other titles heading to IMDb TV in the deal are Army Wives, Boston Legal, Graceland, L.A. Law, Legends, Lie to Me,...

Psych 2: Lassie Come Home is building out its cast. Allison Miller will join her A Million Little Things co-star James Roday, along with Sarah Chalke (Scrubs), Kadeem Hardison (A Different World) and Richard Schiff (The West Wing) in the movie set to air later this year on Peacock, NBCU’s upcoming streaming service.

The film, which is named after Tim Omundson’s Santa Barbara Police Chief Carlton Lassiter, will explore the marriage between Shawn, played by Roday, and Maggie Lawson’s Juliet after the pair’s nupitals at the end of the first movie.

Hulu is adapting Clive Barker’s story collection, Books of Blood, as a movie, adding Star Trek director Brannon Braga and a stacked cast.

Books of Blood, the 1984-1985 six-volume short story collection that first brought maestro of macabre Clive Barker to prominence, is getting a feature film treatment. However, don’t expect to find said film at theaters, VOD, or, for that matter, even Netflix. – It’s coming to Hulu!

Brannon Braga, the veteran writer and producer of the Star Trek franchise, will be the driving force behind Hulu’s Books of Blood in a move that will certainly delight Trekkies… well, the ones who can appreciate hellishly twisted creatures and ambulatory flayed people. The project will be the feature directorial debut for Braga, who’s also serving as executive producer, set to co-write with Adam Simon, who worked with him on Wgn America series Salem.

NBC is developing a drama series on which CNN political correspondent Dana Bash will serve as a consulting producer, Variety has learned.

Titled “The Hill,” the series is described as a character drama that lives at the supercharged intersection of media and Capitol Hill where everything is transacted: information, sex, love, fame and power. The series focuses on the people who make this world home.

Paul Grellong serves as writer and executive producer, along with Chris King and Josh Berman of Osprey Productions and Wendy Walker. Sony Pictures Television, where Osprey is set up under an overall deal, will produce.

Grellong previously wrote the for NBC shows “Revolution” and “Law & Order: Svu,” serving as a co-executive producer on the former and a co-producer on the latter. His other writing and producing credits include “Hawaii Five-o,” “Scorpion,” and “Terra Nova.”

This is the third announced project that Osprey has set up at NBC this development season.

HBO Max is filling out more executive posts, this time in its family friendly divisions.

Billy Wee has been named senior vice president of original animation, and Nikki Reed has been tapped as vice president of kids and family scripted originals at the upcoming streaming platform, which debuts in the spring of 2020. Both report to Jennifer O’Connell, executive VP of original non-fiction and kids at HBO Max.

“The kids and family space has a long history at WarnerMedia, from our legendary animation to classic motion pictures, and is now an essential part of HBO Max,” said HBO Max chief content officer Kevin Reilly, who also serves as the president of TNT, TBS and truTV. “We now have a top-notch team to create a slate of original content appealing to kids, tweens, young adults and the whole family.”

Fazekas & Butters, a production company led by Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, has named Juan Alfonso as the new head of television. There, he will develop and produce projects, and seek out and engage with writers, intellectual property and creative partners, “matchmaking talented people and ideas,” according to Alfonso. The pod, which launched in 2015, has an overall deal with ABC Studios. Victoria Vigo will join him as manager of television.

The first trailer for the highly anticipated reboot dropped on Thursday to the excitement of plenty of fans. Directed by Elizabeth Banks, the film centers on the iconic trio led by Kristen Stewart, Aladdin‘s Naomi Scott and British newcomer Ella Balinska.

With the release of Disney's live-action remake of Aladdin just around the corner, we're excited to see every detail of the new Agrabah. Aside from Will Smith as the Genie, most of the main cast is made up of relative newcomers for whom this is their first big blockbuster role. Naomi Scott, the British actress who plays the brave, strong-willed Princess Jasmine, is no stranger to the big screen, but this is definitely her biggest role to date.

In a sense, Aladdin is bringing Scott's career full circle. The actress got her first screen credits a decade ago with a couple of Disney-branded projects. In 2009, she costarred as "Megan" in Life Bites, a British-produced sketch comedy show that lasted for two seasons. From there, she moved over into mainstream Disney Channel with a role in the 2011 TV movie Lemonade Mouth and an accompanying short, Lemonade Mouth: Somebody.

Paramount Network eyes a Breaking Bad dynamic for border crime series Coyote, which will star Michael Chiklis.

Michael Chiklis, a name widely associated with acclaimed crime shows, is set to star in Coyote, an intriguing TV project brandishing a premise pertinent to today’s news headlines, for the burgeoning cable channel, Paramount Network.

Coyote will see Chiklis – in a way akin to his legendary run as tortured bent cop, Vic Mackey on The Shield – headline in a dark character study, as Variety reports. Here, he will play United States Border Agent Ben Clemens, who on the day of his mandatory retirement, discovers a tunnel used for black market smuggling into the United States from Mexico. After choosing to take advantage of this Narnia-like portal for illicit activity, Clemens finds himself targeted by an old enemy made on the job, a criminal mastermind he’s spent his career chasing.

The live-action remake of the popular Disney film has raked in $207 million worldwide since its release on Friday and has earned $112 million at the U.S. box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Avengers: Infinity War” has been honored for the best visual effects of 2018 at the 17th Annual Visual Effects Society Awards, which were handed out on Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The Marvel film won four awards, including the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature award in the category that most closely corresponds to the Academy Awards’ Best Visual Effects category.

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” also won four awards, sweeping the animated categories in another show of awards strength. “First Man” won the award for supporting visual effects, while “Ready Player One” won for created environment and virtual cinematography.

According to Variety, Tom Hardy will return as Eddie Brock, a persistent reporter who makes a transformative connection with an alien symbiote with a hunger for human heads in the first movie.
