The movie, based on the graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag (whose work also inspired the Prime Video series “Tales From the Loop”), takes place in an alternate 1990s that has survived a robot uprising that started when the animatronics developed by Walt Disney for Disneyland gained sentience. Brown plays Michelle, an orphaned teenager living in this post-apocalyptic society, whose missing brother makes contact with her via a robot. While the duo responsible for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame have previously said they wouldn't be free to work on an MCU project until the end of the decade, the duo's Agbo-produced content has been a tad hit-or-miss.

Cherry starring Tom Holland wasn't the Oscar frontrunner many expected and blockbuster TV shows and movies like Citadel and The Gray Man received similarly tepid responses. Arguably the only real hit has been Netflix's Extraction movies.

As a result, a return to the Avengers franchise benefits them just as much as it does Marvel Studios.

The numbers don’t lie. When Joe and Anthony Russo are at the helm of an “Avengers” movie, it means money in the bank. According to Deadline, Marvel is in talks with Anthony and Joe Russo to return to helm the upcoming Avengers sequels. The directorial duo are responsible for the one of the best Marvel films, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the biggest box office success in film history, Avengers: Endgame. Marvel’s lengthy search for the directors of its next two “Avengers” movies might have finally reached its endgame.

The Hollywood Reporter and Variety say that Joe and Anthony Russo have entered talks with the studio to direct the next two films in the franchise. Marvel had previously announced that the studio’s Phase 6 slate of films would end with the movies “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” in 2026 and “Avengers: Secret Wars” in 2027. The former film was supposed to focus on Jonathan Majors’ villainous character Kang the Conqueror, who appeared in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and five episodes of “Loki” and was being positioned as the primary antagonist in subsequent story arcs. Marvel parted ways with Majors following the guilty verdict in his assault and harassment trial in December 2023, but has yet to comment on whether the role will be recast or if the next “Avengers” film will still be titled “The Kang Dynasty.

As it puts the final touches on its big Hall H presentation for next week’s Comic Con, Marvel Studios looks to have already made plans to bring back its largest-grossing directing duo in a big way.

Sources tell Deadline, Joe and Anthony Russo are being brought into the fold at Marvel Studios on various fronts with one of their first big priorities being the upcoming Avengers sequels at the studio. Talks for the pair to direct those films are still in early stages, but the plan would be for them to be involved in both films.
