A Great Canadian Film that Exposes the Human Nature
In a near future, governments must reduce their population in 20% due to the environmental changes. The houses and cars need window tint and pedestrians need umbrella to protect from the UV rays. The Canadian government encourages people to enlist in the euthanasia program, paying large amounts to those that enlist. The famous and wealthy retired journalist and anchor Charles York (Peter Gallagher) and his second wife Dawn Kim (Uni Park), who owned a prestigious restaurant, invite his estranged sons and daughters for a dinner. Jared York (Jay Baruchel) is an obnoxious anthropologist; Rachel York (Emily Hampshire) is an obnoxious pharmaceutical; Ashley York (Alanna Bale) is an aspirant actress; and Noah York (Sebastian Chacon) was a pianist and a former addicted that has recovered with the help of his girlfriend Grace (Blessing Adedijo). Rachel brings her teenage daughter Mia York (Sirena Gulamgaus), despite the invitation was for adult only. Soon Charles discloses that Dawn and he had enlisted, bringing protests from his children. Out of the blue, Dawn flees from the home, scared with the arguments of the group about the euthanasia procedure. Immediately after, Bob (Enrico Colantoni), from the Department of Citizen Strategy, arrives at the York mansion with armed D. O. C. S. guards to exert the procedure on Charles and Dawn. Charles explains that Dawn had cold feet and fled, and he reluctantly submits to the procedure alone. Then, Bob says that they come to take two bodies from the York family, and one is still missing. Therefore, the siblings have one hour to decide who will be the second body.
"Humane" (2024) is a great Canadian film that exposes the human nature under pressure. The landscape of Earth without natural resources and needing to reduce population is very credible, as well the effects of the sun. Charles' motivation is questionable, but his biological children are horrendous as human beings. The sadism of the cynical Bob is hilarious and the situation of the four adults in the house is dreadful. The conclusion is silly, but logical, and breaks the black humor of the plot. My vote is seven.
