School can be cruel
This short subject film which was shot in Atlanta concerns two middle school kids, popular and beautiful Destiny West who may be a big girl on campus, but actually leads a pretty dismal life. When we see her leave school we find she's a latch key kid left pretty much to her own devices and hungry for some family.
Then there's our title character Magellan played by Christopher Hobgood. He's an oddball kid who wears bow ties to school and is learning the waltz because he wants to take West to the school dance. West does not want to lose her social standing going out with a nerd.
School can and is a cruel place at times. But we hope that Hobgood adapts and overcomes his surroundings.
Besides the leads the cast includes Blake Michael who is five years later currently a Disney teen star on Dog With A Blog. Among the supporting cast he clearly does stand out.
Not much for a short subject with zilch production values. But Magellan is a nice film with a nice story about a kid trying to deal with a cruel school world.
