Father John Misty is back with another new song, “She Cleans Up,” off his forthcoming album, Mahashmashana.
“She Cleans Up” is a stomping glam-and-grit rocker driven by a chunky bass line, splashy baselines, and guitar riffs designed to be blown to rattle the casings of your speakers. “I know just how this thing ends/Hallelujah, guess we gave the karmic wheel a spin,” Josh Tillman sings on one chorus, “I know just how this thing ends/The aggrieved becomes aggressor/And we do it all again.”

Father John Misty has revealed two brand new songs, “Screamland” and “She Cleans Up.” Update: His new album, Mahashmashana, will arrive in November.
Father John Misty had originally teased new music a couple weeks ago by uploading a cryptic YouTube video simply named “9/17” — assumedly the date that “Screamland” and “She Cleans Up” will hit streaming services — but on September 15th, the singer and songwriter dropped both songs on his Soundcloud account. The two-track file begins with “Screamland” and then segues into the studio version of “She Cleans Up.”

While “She Cleans Up” is a bluesy, ’70s-inspired rock track a la The Black Keys or St. Vincent, “Screamland” is a sprawling, cinematic cut that evokes Josh Tillman (Father John Misty)’s zeitgeist-lamenting third album, Pure Comedy. With moving strings, a blown-out chorus, and a climactic urgency, “Screamland” strikes the balance between personal and universal. “Keep dreaming/ Screaming,...

Exclusive: Fiona Shaw (Andor), Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice) and Chaske Spencer (The English) have entered production in NYC on Park Avenue, a new indie drama from Sundance alum Gaby Dellal (On a Clear Day), who directs from her script written with Tina Alexis Allen.
A production of Rimsky Productions and Washington Square Films, Park Avenue follows a mother and daughter who, over a fraught six weeks, reveal secrets, unravel lies and ultimately lay bare the ties that bind. Paralyzed by her life wrangling cattle in Alberta, Canada, Charlotte (Waterston) jumps into her Ford Bronco, flees her over-controlling husband, and lands back in her childhood Park Avenue apartment where she takes refuge with her mother Kit (Shaw). Rediscovering the boy she loved, now her grown doorman Anders (Spencer), and the life she left at 18, the mother and daughter explore shared history, unshared truths and find a way to face both love and loss.

British cinematographer Ben Davis is an early awards frontrunner for his work on Martin McDonagh’s latest The Banshees of Inisherin, but he told Deadline that his focus remains firmly on the film’s financial performance.
“My priorities with Banshees are I want the film to be good, and I want it to succeed financially,” he told Deadline during a sit-down at the Camerimage film festival in Torun, Poland. “I look at where cinema is at the moment, particularly independent cinema, and I’m concerned. I know a lot of studios are looking, and these films aren’t making the money they did pre-pandemic.”
Banshees opened to an estimated 181,000 and a per-screen average of 45,250. The film currently sits over 15 million worldwide.

The 2022 BET Awards are being handed out Sunday night.
The show kicked off with host Taraji P. Henson, presenter Janelle Monae and best female R&b/pop artist winner Jazmine Sullivan all addressing the recent Supreme Court decision to reverse the Roe v. Wade ruling within the first 17 minutes of the show.
“Guns have more rights than a woman,” Henson said in her monologue. “It’s a sad day in America. A weapon that can take lives has more power than woman who can give life, if she chooses to.”
Monae gave the middle finger and said, “Fuck you, Supreme Court” (the swear word was bleeped), while Sullivan called on males to support females in fighting for their rights.
Heading into the show, Doja Cat leads the nominations with a total of six mentions, including best female R&b/pop artist and best female hip-hop artist.

There were high hopes for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS)’ 93rd Academy Awards ceremony. For the first time in history, nearly half of the nominees in acting categories were people of color, and 70 women were nominated across all 23 categories. These were unprecedented numbers for an awards show that has existed for nearly a century. While some of this change resulted from AMPAS’ Academy Aperture 2020 Diversity Initiative (A2020) and the Tarana Burke-founded #MeToo Movement, the events of 2020 also shook Hollywood to its core.
As the world shuttered in early 2020 amid the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, we found new ways to connect through cinema. Stories like Sophia Nahli Allison’s “A Love Song for Latasha” and Garrett Bradley’s “Time” became easily accessible to audiences worldwide. There was also a racial reckoning in the final months of a tumultuous presidential administration, giving rise to a second Civil Rights Movement.

Michael Wolf Snyder, the sound mixer for a number of film titles, including Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland and The Rider, has died by suicide, according to a Facebook post from his aunt. He was 35.
Snyder’s aunt, Cathy Snyder, shared a post from the sound mixer’s father, David Snyder, in which he details finding his son’s body in his Queens, N.Y. home.
“Michael took his own life sometime in the last week, and it wasn’t discovered until I went to check on him Monday after he dropped out of contact for several days,” David Snyder originally wrote. “He has suffered from Major Depression for many years. For most people, this is an illness that waxes and wanes over the years. I’m sure it was difficult for Michael that he spent most of the last year alone in his small, Queens apartment, being responsible about dealing with the coronavirus.

In a 2018 interview for Criterion’s “Under the Influence” series, director Chloé Zhao broke down her appreciation of Terrence Malick’s 2005 “The New World.” The “Nomadland” director discussed how Malick’s spirituality, and how the viewer got sense of a bigger world beyond the characters and frame, came through in how he approached nature.
“The filmmaker’s curiosity of trying to talk about humanity through nature because it’s not just us and nature, we’re the same thing,” Zhao told Criterion about “The New World.” “And he’s really asking us to think that way in his filmmaking, and that dictates how he works with his actors and how his cinematography works.”
While she was on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast to discuss her third feature film, the Oscar frontrunner “Nomadland,” IndieWire asked Zhao if her description of Malick doesn’t also apply to her own approach to story and filmmaking.

The awards season’s narrative has been the “year of the women,” as female filmmakers, screenwriters and artisans have been making strong cases for nominations at the Oscars in categories like best picture and director. The Writers Guild of America Awards, however, might have missed the memo, only nominating four women over two films: Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman” and Jena Friedman, Erica Rivinoja and Nina Pedrad, three co-writers from “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.”
In the three categories for original, adapted and documentary feature, 31 total screenwriters were nominated, four of which are women, and three come from the same feature film.
Many high-profile contenders were not eligible for recognition, including “Nomadland” (Chloé Zhao) and “Pieces of a Woman” (Kata Wéber), along with independent darlings like “The Assistant” (Kitty Green), “Farewell Amor” (Ekwa Msangi) and “Herself” (Clare Dunne). Despite this fact, there were still many to choose from.

Hollywood figures, despite the industry’s major shutdowns due to the Covid-19 pandemic, continue to find chart-topping success. Among the industry names finding a place in YouTube’s Top Trending Videos of 2020 list are Dave Chappell, Ricky Gervais and John Krasinski.

You know you are not watching just any old prestige drama when a film throws in a shot of its lead character - played by a 2-time Oscar winner - defecating a mere three minutes into its running time. Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland is a film concerned with the concrete realities of life. Things that might seem mundane or unmentionable but take up a big part of everyday life. How a woman carves a small place on earth to sleep, eat, work and yes defecate.
Fern (Frances McDormand), having lost her work and home when the factory that employed her in a now-defunct company town closed, refurbishes her old van and sets out in the vastness of the American West to find seasonal work. She rests when she can, deals with the elements and makes tentative attempts to find a community among the older itinerant people she meets.

Every year, the Toronto International Film Festival puts critics to work. While the 45th edition of TIFF had fewer films than usual — 50 instead of 300-plus — the 2020 program still had the usual mix of buzzy titles and hidden gems, giving critics plenty of material to dig through. Most accredited press experienced this year’s lineup at home, through the robust press and industry portal in which most titles were available to stream for limited windows. With hundreds of critics watching and reviewing films in recent weeks, IndieWire was able to maintain its annual critics survey of the best films and performances out of this year’s festival.
With 137 accredited critics and journalists voting, Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” topped the categories of Best Movie and Best Director. Kemp Powers’ adaptation of his own play, “One Night in Miami,” scored the most votes for Best Screenplay, while Vanessa Kirby dominated the Best Performance...

This year’s BFI London Film Festival, taking place as a hybrid of online and physical activities due to ongoing pandemic disruption, has unveiled a program of 58 titles.
A selection of screenings will take place at cinemas and others will take place in a virtual form for audiences across the UK. The films come from 40 countries. All screenings are geo-blocked to the UK, though festival talks will be available to experience for free around the world.
As previously announced, Steve McQueen’s Mangrove will open this year’s fest and Francis Lee’s Ammonite will close.
Titles include Pixar’s new movie Soul, which would’ve been at Cannes, Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland, which is set to premiere in Venice, Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round, which was part of this year’s Cannes Label, Miranda July’s Kajillionaire, which debuted at Sundance, Bassam Tariq’s Mogul Mowgli, which was at Berlinale,...

With August coming tomorrow, this would usually be prime time for a new updated to Oscar predictions. However, these are not normal times, so for many pundits, awards season prognostication is on hold. Call me crazy, though, but I’m keeping at it. Am I (as I stated on social media earlier on this month) just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic? For sure. Does that stop me? Not at all. I’m still making some guesses, trying to figure out what may or may not happen when the Academy begins to actually think about contenders. Plus, it’s a minor feeling of normalcy, and we all need that these days, in whatever form you can find it. For me, this is one of them. New predictions can be found below. Interestingly, I’d pulled out Christopher Nolan’s Tenet for a bit, in between the last update and this one,...

As the streaming wars continue to heat up and get more competitive, a lot of studios must be regretting their decision to hand over the rights to a lot of their biggest movies and TV shows, which puts them at a significant disadvantage in trying to gain a foothold in the battle for subscribers.
Disney Plus is doing just fine given the vast amount of brands they have as part of their ever-expanding portfolio, which has only increased exponentially following their takeover of Fox, while Netflix are relying more heavily on their in-house content than ever as they let the rights to more and more pre-existing stories revert back to their original owners.

Here in June, there’s actually a bit of Oscar chatter to be had. For one thing, an Academy Award worthy contender in Da 5 Bloods has opened. Plus, we now know that the Oscars are being delayed into April, giving films until the end of February to open and contend. That signals that the movies in the running this time around will be larger than was assumed, even just a few weeks ago. More on that in a piece still to come, but today this means one more thing…a new crop of predictions. Give them a look and sit tight for another update next month. Here’s a new set of predictions, just for you. Enjoy: Best Picture 1. Da 5 Bloods 2. West Side Story 3. The Trial of the Chicago 7 4. Mank 5. News of the World 6. Nomadland 7. C’mon C’mon 8. In normal years, the start of June would signal an interesting point to check in on the Oscar race. Were there any summer blockbusters that could potentially make an awards play? Which early year releases have staying power? Normally, we’d have the Cannes Film Festival having established some possible players. Here in 2020, however, we have none of that, really. The movies from the first part of the year are still there, but who knows whether they’ll be given a fair shake? Plus, so many still to be released flicks (including two notable ones that I’ve already seen and am embargoed on until later this month) are X factors, in multiple ways. With all that in your mind, take these updated predictions with a major grain of salt. Still, enjoy… Here now are some sure to change predictions for the Academy Awards: Best Picture 1. West Side Story 2. Mank...

While Netflix continues to add a lot of great content, including some new original series for the summer, the platform is also going to be losing parts of its library. In particular, July will see The Matrix trilogy depart the service for the newly launched HBO Max, with some other Warner Bros. movies also making their way over to the fledgling subscription rival. What titles, then, are no longer going to be available on Netflix come July?
Well, among the films that are leaving next month, notable pics include Cloverfield, The Curse of Benjamin Button and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, as well as the majority of the Tremors franchise. Another big Warner Bros. title, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, will also be removed, part of what’s becoming a mass transfer of content over to HBO Max as the rival looks to compete with Netflix on its back-catalogue of movies. An eye-opening new film unspools the unusual emotional bond between a Czech painter and the Norwegian man who stole two of her works
Barbora Kysilkova, a Czech painter, had just recently moved to Oslo when she received a distressing phone call from a gallerist. Two men had finagled their way into the Galleri Nobel in broad daylight, and made off with two works. Both were hers. She wasn’t so much angry as confused. “Why would anyone steal my art?” she wondered. It was part modesty – “I am not a known artist that is worth it to break in, break a law and steal. I’m not Picasso,” she told the Guardian – and part practicality. The two stolen works, Chloe & Emma and Swan Song, were absorbing, photorealistic paintings that both stretched beyond 4x6ft. The thieves not only managed to walk out with the canvases rolled up under their arms,...

Why not, right? Even as the industry is still figuring out what the rest of the year will be like, 2020 deserves to have some kind of accolades for its best titles, no? In some form or another, we’re going to have the Oscars. We now know that streaming titles will have more ability to contend than ever before, while the overall slate of films competing for love from the Academy could be the smallest in a long time. That’s going to present an interesting scenario, one we can’t quite fully comprehend yet. For the moment, it’s just a blind guessing game as to which movies will be able to come out in time for the awards, which will be worthy, and who the nominees will be. Today, I update my picks, if only to not seem horribly misinformed. Plus, it’s an excellent distraction… Here’s...

Welcome to the exciting, hesitant, guilt-laden and provocative world of Eric Rohmer, and his varied voyages of slightly intimidated romantic discovery. There are six Moral Tales (and some short subjects) and each finds a main character stymied by indecision: should he hew to the narrow moral path, or stop being so conflicted and let relationships happen as they may? Some are moral debates and others are just ruminations on the foolishness of males that overthink their love lives — or are these self-directed men simply trying to be considerate and fair while navigating their amorous possibilities?

Harvey Weinstein-inspired drama received an early digital release in the UK due to cinema closures.
UK streaming platform Curzon Home Cinema (Chc) has recorded its biggest weekend to date following the early digital release of Harvey Weinstein-inspired drama The Assistant.
The film, starring Julia Garner (Ozark), helped the platform generate a 7.4% revenue boost on its previous best weekend and was 340% up on Chc’s equivalent weekend in 2019.
It marks an ongoing success story for the streaming platform, which has seen a consistent rise in figures following the closure of all cinemas in mid-March as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

‘Portrait Of A Lady On Fire’, ‘And Then We Danced’ lead Mubi, BFI Player charts.
Oliver Hermanus’ Moffie topped UK streaming platform Curzon Home Cinema’s (Chc) most-watched films over the weekend, after sidestepping a theatrical release due to the ongoing Covid-19 lockdown.
The gay military drama, which had its world premiere in the Horizons section of Venice, was originally due to receive a UK day-and-date release on April 24. But the continued closure of cinemas meant the film launched exclusively on Chc and performed strongly as audiences continue to seek out home entertainment during quarantine.

First of all, I hope everyone is staying safe. That’s the most important thing. By comparison, the Oscars are meaningless. However, I know there are plenty of people who look forward to advance predictions and their subsequent updates, so I don’t want to let anyone down. So, bellow you’ll see another round of predictions, ever so slightly tinkered with. Nothing much is happening to report on, awards wise, but when it does happen, we’ll be here for you. In the meantime, consider this mostly just a look at some of the potential contenders if/when awards season does come around. Some of these titles may end up 2021 releases, but at least a good handful will be under consideration for this year’s prizes… Here now is a slightly updated new set of Academy Award predictions: Best Picture 1. West Side Story 2. Mank 3. The Trial of the Chicago...

Ed Bahlman: Atom, it’s a beautiful score. Can you talk a little bit how you worked with the composer?
Atom Egoyan: The composer is someone I’ve been working with since Family Viewing, Mychael Danna. He’s a very brilliant composer. Because of the relationship, a lot of the visual composing...

Happy Birthday to me! What better way to celebrate being a 33 year old Oscar prognosticator than to updated predictions on the big day? Plus, with so many film related items being about cancelations and delays (with more surely to come), this is a welcome, if momentary, moment of something positive to look forward to. Anyway, in regard to the predictions, not much has changed, though I’ve included a few early year releases, in part to make sure a light remains shined on them. The months to come will be fascinating, for many reasons, but this is another snapshot at what the race could look like. Enjoy, and hopefully things get back to normal before too long: Here now are some slightly tinkered with early Oscar predictions: Best Picture 1. Mank 2. Da 5 Bloods 3. The Trial of the Chicago 7 4. West Side Story 5. C’mon C’mon 6. News of the World 7. Nomadland 8. Stillwater 9. Ammonite...
