The Descent director Neil Marshall returns with action thriller Duchess, starring Charlotte Kirk. Here’s the first trailer for the movie.
Neil Marshall made his name with a string of successful horror films like Dog Soldiers and The Descent. The latter is often considered one of the best, most terrifying horror films of the 2000s. Marshall was only involved with the sequel as an executive producer, though.
He then ventured into science fiction with 2008’s Doomsday followed by historical adventure Centurion. While he found little success with the 2019 reboot of Hellboy, he returned to his roots for the last couple of films, including 2020’s The Reckoning and 2022’s The Lair. He has also pivoted to the small screen in recent years, directing episodes of Hannibal, Westworld, Timeless and Lost In Space.
Now, he turns his hand to action with Duchess. The synopsis reads as follows:

Neil Marshall seems to want what Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino had in the early aughts. For his latest outing, the once-promising English filmmaker behind horror films like “Dog Soldiers” and “The Descent” scales back his interest in frights for a more straightforward tale of fights, but fails to land nearly every punch he throws. Rather than build on the template his aforementioned peers built on themselves, Marshall does nothing for the ensemble crime thriller genre other than play the hits, which would’ve been bearable had he actually done so on key and with some care or nuance.
Right from the get-go, “Duchess” unveils itself as paint-by-numbers contrivance with an in media res sequence that drops us into the middle of a scene between main character, Scarlett (Charlotte Kirk), and an unseemly goon trying to get his rocks off. Charlotte Kirk put herself on the map with Vice alongside Bruce Willis and Thomas Jane and has since starred in the likes of No Panic with a Hint of Hysteria, Ocean's 8, and The Juice.
She's also co-written, produced, and starred in Neil Marshall's The Reckoning and The Lair and now reteams with the filmmaker for Duchess, an action-packed new British action-crime thriller also starring Colm Meaney, Sean Pertwee, Stephanie Beacham, and Philip Winchester.
We recently spoke to Kirk and asked about creating Scarlett, a.k.a. The Duchess. "As a writer/producer, I sat down with my co-writer/director Neil Marshall...we've done two films previously and were like, 'What do you want to do next.' We wanted to do a really cool gangster movie and it came really organically," she explains in the video below.

Neil Marshall got his feature directorial career started with one of the coolest werewolf movies ever made, Dog Soldiers, which begins with a scene where a camper played by Craig Conway gets attacked by a monstrous beast. Marshall went on to cast Conway as a different sort of monstrous beast in his next film, The Descent, then as a power-hungry cannibal named Sol in his film Doomsday (pictured above). Now Marshall is serving as an executive producer on Conway’s own feature directorial debut… and judging by the title, Conway might be getting his directing career started in a way similar to Marshall’s own. Because when I see the title Little Red, my first thought is that this could be a werewolf movie.
Deadline has confirmed that Little Red “will reimagine the Little Red Riding Hood story through a contemporary lens.” The involvement of werewolves, however, has not been confirmed.

Last month, we got a look at the trailer for the action thriller Duchess, the latest film from director Neil Marshall. Saban Films will be giving Duchess a digital and VOD release on August 9th… and with that date just one week away, a pair of promotional clips have made their way online. They’re called the “Home Invasion” and “Garage Ambush” clips, and you can watch them right here in this article.
In the UK, Duchess will be getting a limited theatrical release on August 9th, and will then be available for digital download on the 12th.
Marshall wrote the Duchess screenplay with Charlotte Kirk, who also stars as the title character, a tough, working-class, petty criminal who morphs into an anti-heroine to be reckoned with in a murky underworld, in the treacherous world of diamond smuggling. Determined to seek retribution she launches into a vicious and violent pursuit for vengeance.

"Real power can never be given, it has to be taken." Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for a British action thriller titled Duchess, the latest movie from genre filmmaker Neil Marshall. For the last few years he has been making movies with his young wife Charlotte Kirk, who now helps produce and co-write the movies in addition to starring in them (also: The Reckoning and The Lair before this one). The film follows a tough, working-class, petty criminal named Scarlett who morphs into an anti-heroine to be reckoned with in a murky underworld, in the treacherous world of diamond smuggling. Duchess, a small-time crook, ends up left for dead when a deal goes wrong. Determined to seek retribution, she launches into an unwavering pursuit for vengeance. But of course. Duchess also stars Philip Winchester, Colm Meaney, Stephanie Beacham, Sean Pertwee and Hoji Fortuna. Alas this one looks like an instantly forgettable action flick.

Theaters will need wider screens because two action icons built like trucks, Dolph Lundgren and Michael Jai White, are teaming up for Fight or Flight, an upcoming action thriller. Shane Dax Taylor directs the assassins-in-action film project, and Charlotte Kirk joins the lead cast. Fight or Flight is going to Cannes. Archstone represents international sales, while Saban holds the North American rights.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Fight or Flight has the following synopsis:
“Sam Hayden as an assassin of assassins, completing every assignment – no matter how dangerous with ruthless precision. Sam’s next assignment is to take out his legendarily ruthless predecessor, Charles Managold (Dolph Lundgren), who has fallen for his beautiful exotic mark and is now on the run with her. In Denis Villeneueve's sci-fi epic "Dune: Part Two," the desert-dwelling Fremen have learned a clever way to live in the wastelands of Arrakis, even as mile-long destructive sandworms furtively burrow around under their feet. For one, they have discovered that the sandworms are attracted to steady, regular ground beats, and have altered their walking to be irregular in response. The Fremen have also learned how to ride on the backs of the sandworms using an elaborate and dangerous lassoing method that takes years to refine.
A Fremen worm-rider will climb to the top of a sand dune and insert a small, forearm-length device called a thumper into the ground. A thumper, as its name implies, regularly pounds on the ground, deliberately attracting a sandworm. When a worm explodes out of the sand and charges for the thumper, the Fremen rider will fire grappling hooks into its body, hooking open the worm's creepy breathing flaps.

Stars: Charlotte Kirk, Jamie Bamber, Jonathan Howard, Hadi Khanjanpour, Tanji Kibong, Leon Ockenden, Troy Alexander | Written and Directed by Neil Marshall
Director Neil Marshall returns with a soldiers-vs-monsters thriller that harks back to his 2002 debut Dog Soldiers. Unfortunately, it’s something of a mixed bag – there are some entertainingly gloopy gore moments and the monsters are suitably monstrous, but the film is ultimately let down by dismal acting, a dull script and flat direction.
Charlotte Kirk plays Flight Lieutenant Kate Sinclair, who gets shot down over a rebel stronghold in Afghanistan. Fleeing her attackers, she takes refuge in an abandoned underground bunker and unwittingly unleashes an army of toothy monsters.
Escaping to the desert, Kate falls in with a band of bickering soldiers – dubbed “the Dirty Half-Dozen” – who include: American senior officer Finch (Jamie Bamber), rugby-loving Welshman Jones (Leon Ockenden), kleptomaniac African-American Lafayette (Tanji Kibong), grumpy Hook (Jonathan Howard), military...

It’s no surprise to hear that Charlotte Kirk will be starring in director Neil Marshall‘s psychological thriller Compulsion, as she has starred in his last three films: The Reckoning, The Lair, and Duchess (which hasn’t been released yet). She has even co-written the screenplays for all three of those movies with Marshall. So it was almost a given that she would star in Compulsion as well, but Deadline reports that she’s being joined in the cast by Anna-Maria Sieklucka, who starred in the massive hit 365 Days for the Netflix streaming service.
Scripted by Marshall, Compulsion is said to be inspired by the old school erotic thrillers of the ’80s and ’90s, like Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, and Single White Female. This one centers on the dynamically twisted relationship between two women, as both become embroiled in a series of horrific murders on the island of Malta.

"Over cover is blown, we live in 15 minutes!" Open Road Films has revealed their first look teaser trailer for an action thriller arriving this summer titled Kandahar. In this one, Gerard Butler stars as an undercover CIA operative stuck deep in hostile territory. After his covert mission is exposed, he must fight his way out alongside his Afghan translator to an extraction point in Kandahar, all whilst avoiding elite enemy forces and foreign spies. The cast also includes Navid Negahban, Ali Fazal, Travis Fimmel, and Elnaaz Norouzi. This is opening in theaters in May early in the summer. This looks like another perfectly gritty action role for Butler. Are they going to try & pull off a Mad Max in the desert? // Continue Reading ›...

Neil Marshall is firmly in what I consider phase three of his career. Phase one would be defined as being his breakout and period between Dog Soldiers to Centurion, phase two would be his TV career, directing pilots and key episodes of Black Sails, Game of Thrones and Lost in Space, and phase three would be his dive back into feature films, developing smaller scale genre vehicles for (and with) his his partner, actress Charlotte Kirk.
The first two films in this phase have been the witch trials thriller, The Reckoning and the mutant horror actioner, The Lair. Both have their ups and downs, but while many old school Mars...

Netflix delivers a brand-new Spanish comedy about four middle-aged amigos overcoming their toxic masculinity. With an ensemble cast, ‘Machos Alfa’ (titled ‘Alpha Males’ in English) tells four different stories about machismo, sexuality, fidelity, and patriarchy. The series is clever and uses a modern setting that doesn’t overwash the plot with social media as other shows do in their attempt to be relevant. It tackles the issues with its realistic characters and plots. The characters and their issues are believable and do not fall victim to much melodrama. Directed by a woman, Laura Caballero, the series is a lighthearted show that avoids aggressively illustrating feminism. One of my absolute favorite (and mind-bending) films that had its world premiere at this year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival was Old Man, directed by Lucky McKee from a screenplay by Joel Veach (and featuring phenomenal performances by Stephen Lang and Marc Senter), so I'm thrilled that in addition to its theatrical and VOD release back in October, the twist-filled thriller is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on December 6th via Rlje Films:
Press Release: Los Angeles – -Rlje Films, a business unit of AMC Networks, will release the thriller film, Old Man, on DVD and Blu-ray December 6, 2022.

Old Man will be available on DVD for an Srp of 27.97 and on Blu-ray for an Srp of 28.96.

There’s something inherently terrifying about subterranean horror. Getting trapped underground creates a tense survival scenario thanks to various dangers. But what about what’s lurking in the dark? Survival horror with carnivorous creatures provides fertile ground for fear.
Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) is back with the brand new underground monster movie The Lair, which comes to theaters and on Digital and VOD on October 28, 2022.
In The Lair, “Royal Air Force pilot Lt. Kate Sinclair (Charlotte Kirk) is shot down over Afghanistan and finds refuge in an abandoned underground bunker where deadly man-made biological weapons – half human, half alien – are awakened.”
Jonathan Howard (Thor: The Dark World) and Jamie Bamber (“Battlestar Galactica”) also star.
Charlotte Kirk co-wrote the screenplay with Neil Marshall.
In anticipation of Marshall’s return to the subterranean creature feature, we look back at eight horror movies that feature underground monsters.

Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) is back with the brand new monster movie The Lair, which is now in limited theaters and on Digital and VOD from Rlje Films.

Marshall said in a statement, “I’m thrilled to be back in the world of full-blooded action horror for the first time since ‘The Descent’ and ‘Dog Soldiers,’ and this film certainly holds some kinship with those two movies.
“Originally conceived as a small and contained indie film to shoot during lockdown, my ambitions for the movie grew into something much more action-packed and monster-fuelled, with a sci-fi twist.

Two decades after making his debut with werewolf war movie “Dog Soldiers,” Neil Marshall offers another spin on military-vs.-monsters action in “The Lair,” a semi-return to form that’s energetic if uninspired and increasingly silly. Nonetheless, it represents a bit of a rebound after the disasters of last year’s “The Reckoning” and an unhappy “Hellboy” reboot he disowned. This first issue from Scarlett Prods., the company he founded with star, co-writer and executive producer Charlotte Kirk, gets released by Rlje Films to limited U.S. theaters as well as VOD and digital Oct. 28. Launch on multi-territory genre streaming platform Shudder is planned for early next year.

The Lair, Director Neil Marshall’s latest genre piece, had the double honour of opening and receiving its world premiere at the 22nd annual FrightFest in London, England. Before the screening, Marshall stated that the movie “had a lot more in keeping with my earlier films like Dog Soldiers and The Descent”. The premise certainly backs this up - on paper it seems to capture the claustrophobia of The Descent and the action and siege environment of Dog Soldiers, but does it deliver a similar result?
The story focuses on Captain Kate Sinclair (Charlotte Kirk), a pilot who is shot down during her final combat mission in Afghanistan. She is ambushed by insurgents but manages to fend them off long enough to take shelter in a large underground bunker. The insurgents pursue Sinclair down under ground, but they find more than the lone Raf pilot there. They find a number of creatures in stasis,...

Responsible for arguably two of the best horror films of the 21st century in Dog Soldiers and The Descent, Neil Marshall’s name used to be synonymous with, at the very least, a bloody good time. More recently though – since his brief foray into TV, helming huge episodes of Game of Thrones, Westworld and the like – his features haven’t so much taken a bit of a knock as they’ve fallen off a cliff. The one-two of 2019’s dire Hellboy reboot, and 2020’s even-more-dire witch drama The Reckoning well and truly knocked his name out of favour for many. And whilst his latest – good old fashioned monster mash The Lair – is definitely a swing in the right direction for the director, it’s unlikely it’ll win him any new fans.

A better-than-expected North American debut saw Disney’s Jungle Cruise arrive at number one on an estimated $34.2m from 4,310 cinemas as the studio said the action adventure starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt earned more than $30m globally on Disney+ Premier Access.
The result was decent considering the steady news flow about the spread of the delta variant across parts of the United States and widespread hesitancy over returning en masse to cinemas.
