I don’t think it’s a controversial opinion to state that, of all the RoboCop movies, only Paul Verhoeven’s original 1987 film deserves to be called a classic. However, a lot of us have always thought that the ultra-violent sequel, RoboCop 2, was better than its reputation suggests. I know from our Original Video on the movie that it has more than a few fans, so it’s exciting to reveal that RoboCop 2 is finally getting a 4K Blu-ray release via Scream Factory.
The news was broken by our friends at Blu-ray.com. The company has also licensed José Padilha’s 2014 remake for release. No RoboCop 3 yet. I suppose the company just decided to let that one go, and you can’t really blame them, as it just might be one of the worst sequels of all time.
No news yet on whether RoboCop 2 will contain any special features.

Plus-2 streaming services with plus signs: Epix will be rebranded as MGM+ in January 2023, the company revealed Wednesday. Also Wednesday: Starz announced it will rebrand international streaming service Starzplay as Lionsgate+. We’re told this was coincidence but still, good grief.
While Lionsgate has long stated that it plans to sell or spin off Starz, Lionsgare also filed this SEC statement today: “Despite the volatile market environment, Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. remains on a path to separating our Starz and studio businesses. As negotiations progress, we have increased our focus on the possibility of spinning our studio business, creating a number of financial and strategic benefits. In that regard, we are continuing productive negotiations with prospective strategic and financial partners on both sides of our business.”
In other words, it still may sell or spin off Starz; or, it might spin off the Lionsgate studio instead. Decisions, decisions, which require buyers,...

Offering rides to strangers can often lead to trouble, and in Sympathy for the Devil, one driver is about to discover that not every passenger is worth picking up. Production is underway in Las Vegas on Sympathy for the Devil, starring Academy Award-winner Nicolas Cage and Joel Kinnaman.
Yuval Adler directs from a script written by Luke Paradise (Lost on a Mountain in Maine). Sympathy for the Devil follows “The Driver” (Kinnaman), who finds himself in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse after being forced to drive a mysterious man, “The Passenger” (Cage). As their white-knuckle ride progresses, it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems.
“This is a tour de force featuring two incredible actors,” said producer Allan Ungar. “As an acclaimed filmmaker, Yuval has assembled the perfect cast and brought a unique and gritty vision to this film that will be sure to capture audiences.

There might be a real-life crime behind Netflix’s “Narcos.”
Director and producer José Padilha (“Robocop”) has officially sued production partner Eric Newman over allegations that Newman is hiding millions of dollars worth of profits from the critically acclaimed series. Padilha listed in the suit that Newman is concealing revenue from Gaumont Television, which violates their profit-sharing agreement.
Newman’s production company Spahn Ranch was supposed to be sharing reports and proceeds from “Narcos” with Padilha’s production company Cold Mountain. The contract states “each party receives an equal amount of Gross Proceeds at all times.” However, Padilha alleges Newman is hiding money because the contract is structured so the amount paid to Newman by Gaumont isn’t transparent.
“Despite having voluntarily accepted the trust reposed in him by Plaintiffs, and in violation of this relationship of trust, Newman (both individually and on behalf of Spahn Ranch) caused Narcos Revenues...

We'll probably never get the John Wick Nes game we deserve, but one fan has given us something pretty close.
We have no doubt that some studio would have adapted John Wick into an Nes game had the action film franchise begun in the '80s, but since it didn't, we're left with this fanmade take on that appealing concept.
This project, which is simply known as John Wick: The Nes Game, isn't a fully-fledged Nes adaptation (at least not yet) but rather a single YouTube video that showcases what such a game might look like. Specifically, it showcases a level that covers the events of the 2014 film's ending. In classic Nes fashion, though, it sees John Wick face-off not against a human final boss but rather a giant, well-armed helicopter.
Anyone familiar with that era of action games (and video game adaptations for that matter), will...

Having family secrets is one thing, but having a family secret that flips your world upside down in such a way that messes with your cultural and genetic identity can be a heavy burden for you to carry on your shoulders. For Kulap Vilaysack, she faced a hard truth as a teenager when she learned the man that raised her wasn’t her real father. It complicated her relationship with her mother and it marked the start of an emotional journey of uncovering more truths in her entangled family tree that would lead to her documentary Origin Story, which will screen at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival on May 7 ahead of its debut on May 10 on Amazon — all appropriate for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The Titans season finale explores what happens when Dick Grayson returns to Gotham City to confront a Batman who crossed the line.
This Titans review contains spoilers.
Titans Episode 11
As good as Titans has been during its first season, and I do believe that the balance of these episodes have been very good, with moments that approach greatness, it really hasn’t done itself any favors. Unfortunately, the Titans finale is a particularly egregious example of the show playing into the outside perceptions of the show.
From the first trailer, Titans has been a little...confusing. That early footage made it seem like the series was going to lean into the worst instincts of the early Dceu, or that the show was trying far too hard to distinguish itself as a piece of “adult” television, along the lines of the Marvel Netflix shows. The awkward first episode aside, and accounting...

Guy Pearce (Memento) is in talks to join Vin Diesel in Sony Pictures' film adaptation of Bloodshot. According to Deadline, he will replace Michael Sheen who ended up having to drop out of the project due to scheduling and family conflicts.
There's no information on who Pearce is playing in the film, but he's a great actor and it's awesome to see him land another big comic book movie role. He previously starred in Iron Man 3.
Diesel is set to play the title role Bloodshot, a super-soldier created by the secret government organization Project Rising Spirit when he was brought back from the dead through the use of nanotechnology and suffering total memory loss, and struggles to reconnect with who he was while learning what sort of weapon he has become, with the help of a group of other augmented combatants called Chainsaw.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has promoted veteran executives Cassidy Lange and Adam Rosenberg to co-presidents of production.
Jonathan Glickman, president of MGM’s Motion Picture Group, made the announcement on Thursday. The pair will report to Glickman and be responsible for MGM’s growth in film franchises, re-imagined movies based on the studio’s library, and original productions.
“Cassidy and Adam are the perfect pair to seamlessly lead MGM’s production team into the future,” Glickman said. “They have worked collaboratively for seven years, supervising a diverse slate of films ranging from revitalizing a franchise like ‘Creed’ to the international breakout romance ‘Me Before You’ and everything in between. As I’ve seen firsthand, they balance their strong business sense with extraordinary creative passion and we couldn’t have a more complementary and formidable team overseeing theatrical production.”
MGM’s upcoming slate includes the 25th James Bond movie, directed by Danny Boyle and starring Daniel Craig.

Former One Direction singer Zayn Malik returns to the action-movie mode of his 2017 “Dusk Til Dawn” video with the latest from his forthcoming second album, “Let Me.”
According to a press release, the video for the track was creatively developed by Malik himself, working closely with director and producer Jose Padilha (“Narcos,” “Robocop”) and co-starring with actor Steven Bauer (“Scarface,” “Breaking Bad”). The clip is the official sequel to “Dusk Til Dawn,” which won ‘Best Video’ at the 2017 Mt VMAs.
In it, we see Malik consorting with shady-looking underworld figures in an unspecified nefarious activity involving aggressively exchanged briefcases, opulent Miami hotels and nightclubs, suits, yachts, a fight and and of course a beautiful young woman, with whom Malik sails off in a speedboat at the end as the song ends and a “To be continued” rolls across the screen.

Holdover “The Death of Stalin” (IFC) led the way as the specialized market transitions to post-awards season titles. Its second weekend was at the level of “Wind River,” the last specialized success without an award-season boost ($33 million total).
This is balm for art houses starving for new product after the long run of awards titles has run its course. Wes Anderson’s “The Isle of Dogs” will be next up among hopefuls to equal its success.
Still, the weekend yielded two new limited openings with better than expected results. “Flower” (The Orchard) with rising star Zoey Deutch as a lively Valley Girl showed some initial New York/Los Angeles success despite mixed reviews. And “Keep the Change” (Kino Lorber) in a single Manhattan theater delivered a decent first weekend result.

Flower (The Orchard) – Metacritic: 51; Festivals include: Tribeca 2017

In the grand tradition of Deliverance (1972), Rituals (‘77), and Up the Creek (1984) comes Hunter’s Blood (’86), a backwoods hicksploitation actioner that more than gets by with a cast handpicked by the B movie gods and a script wittier than it has to be. Who says the outdoors hold no charm? (Well, normally that would be me.)
Based on the novel by Jere Cunningham (who later wrote the story for Judgment Night, which is just the urban version of the same tale), Hunter’s Blood was released by Palace Pictures in the U.K. in September, and picked up by Roger Corman’s Concorde Pictures for release stateside in January of ’87, where soon after it was destined to languish on home video shelves, with store clerks puzzled as to where it should be stocked. (By the by, I always saw it in the Horror section, where I think it rightfully belonged.) Hard...

Recognizable actors always help a film to secure financing and may increase the interest of potential audiences, but they often work against the aims of a film based on real-life events. That may be especially true for films that endeavor to dramatize events that took place more than 40 years ago, as in 7 Days in Entebbe, which is based on a hijacking and subsequent rescue attempt in the summer of 1976. Directed by José Padilha, known for action thrillers like Elite Squad (2007) and RoboCop (2014), as well as the startling Bus 174 (2002), the film effectively recreates the insane rush of the hijacking and the building tension that surely must have swamped the terrorists and their victims as the real-life drama played out...

Leigh Whannell has been one of the leading voices in modern horror ever since Saw arrived on the scene in 2004. For his second time taking the directorial reins, Whannell ventures into the realm of science fiction with Upgrade, his beautifully brutal action flick that turns Logan Marshall-Green into a living, breathing weapon hell-bent on revenge after an accident and a run-in with some hired thugs leaves him paralyzed and grieving his wife, who is killed by the group of unknown assailants.
Clearly influenced by films like The Terminator, Videodrome, The Matrix, RoboCop, and there may even be a little bit of Johnny Mnemonic in there as well (hey, a girl can dream, can’t she?), Whannell transports us into the future where technology has taken over nearly ever facet of our lives, but Grey Trace (Marshall-Green) still clings to his analog-loving existence by working on classic cars and expressing his...

Update: Vin Diesel has now been confirmed to star in Bloodshot, a sci-fi/action movie based on Valiant comic books, per Deadline. Dave Wilson remains on board to make his directorial debut, aiming to make a franchise starter in the tone of 1980s monster hits like Robocop, The Terminator and Total Recall. Production is scheduled to get underway in July. (Original post follows.) While his Fast and Furious costar Dwayne Johnson is currently having huge success at the box office (and will soon be detouring with a Fast and Furious spin-off), Vin Diesel is looking at his own potential next franchise. The star of such continuing series as xXx and, in vocal form, Guardians of the Galaxy could reportedly add another comic book role to his docket...

Chicago – He has been cleaning up in the preliminary awards so far in 2018, and he’s an odds-on favorite to take the Oscar for Best Actor on Sunday, March 4th. Veteran actor Gary Oldman donned make-up and found the right accent to portray Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour” (also nominated for the Best Picture).
The title refers to one of the most challenging moments of Churchill’s career. Newly minted as Britain’s prime minister in 1940, he faces the onslaught of Adolf Hitler’s attack on his homeland, including the surrounding of the British troops at Dunkirk. Gary Oldman embodies the pugnacious bulldog that characterized Churchill at the height of his power, including the soaring rhetoric that strengthened the morale of the British people.

Even with Ash vs. Evil Dead still kicking all kinds of ass, one can never be too sure of the longevity of any given series. Really, decisions regarding renewals and cancellations are ultimately up to the networks themselves, so all we the viewers can ever do is to keep on watching and hope for the best.
Still, even with serialized formats allowing for broader storytelling and more character development, fans clamor for a fourth entry set in the original Evil Dead timeline of films. In fact, the demand has been there since after Army of Darkness had its run, but nothing ever came to fruition.
The possibility for another theatrical outing exists, though, but it’s contingent on the fate of the currently running series. For more on that front, check out what Bruce Campbell had to say in a recent discussion with Entertainment Weekly:
“We won’t know [if we’ve been renewed] till the middle of March.

As Hollywood looks to genres other than comic book movies to reinvigorate, it seems another “grounded cop thriller with sci-fi elements” is on the way, in the form of Hypnotic. Studio 8 has announced that director Robert Rodriguez and writer Max Borenstein will collaborate on the upcoming project – with Borenstein tasked with re-writing an original script by Rodriguez, and Rodriguez directing and producing.
Over the years, we’ve seen this specific type of movie repeatedly – from I, Robot and Minority Report, to Demolition Man and two versions of Robocop – culminating, most recently, with Bright on Netflix. The important point to note there, though, is the vast range of premise and plot involved in each instance. This specific genre is not simply the same story retold in a slightly different time or setting – but is, instead, fertile ground for the exploration of bigger themes.

The sooner Jared Kushner brokers peace in the Middle East, the sooner we’ll stop being forced to suffer through an endless stream of casually entertaining, cable television-worthy movies about the region’s cyclical violence. Films like José Padila’s “7 Days in Entebbe” — a competent but highly compromised dramatization of the 1976 hijacking of Air France Flight 139 — may not be the most dire consequence of the ongoing turf war between Israel and Palestine, but they’re enough to make you wish that Trump’s beleaguered son-in-law would get to work on the negotiation process, no matter his dubious qualifications.
Actually, when you get right down to it, sending Kushner to get the job done in real life isn’t all that different from sending the director of 2014’s “Robocop” remake to do it on screen. At this point, there’s only so much left to say about the most knotted political conflict in modern history,...

If you are a fan of retro games, there is always one genre that has survived, and that is the side-scrolling beat ‘em up. Depending on your age you may remember the likes of RoboCop, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Batman and even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. What these titles prove is just how versatile the genre is. Wulverblade is a new beat ‘em up based on British history, giving you the chance to bash some Roman brains in.

Like its predecessors, the third film in the hit Shade series Fifty Shades Freed has debuted number one at the box office with an estimated $38.8 million. The final film in the trilogy was able to hold off fellow newcomers Peter Rabbit and The 15:17 to Paris. Freed earned an estimated $98 million overseas for a weekend debut of $139 million total worldwide.
For comparison, 2015’s Fifty shades opened with $85 million domestically and 2017’s Fifty Shades Darker opened with a $45 million weekend. While Freed earned less than its two predecessors, the franchise has crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide.
Peter Rabbit finished second with a domestic estimate of $25 million. The new Sony animated film is the 80th best all-time February opening weekend, finishing a mere $4,500 behind 2014’s Robocop remake which sits uncomfortably at 79. Rabbit opened in 3,768 theaters, which is the fifth largest per-screen-February-opening of all time.
Third place finisher The 15:17 to Paris opened with an estimated $12.6 million.

Bigger, louder, more violent: sequels almost seem duty-bound to one-up what came before. Unfortunately, history's also littered with film sequels that, for all their sound and fury, soon slip from memory. Even if they deliver on the higher bodycount or more over-the-top action, they often lose the character and storytelling of their predecessors. Jaws and RoboCop are examples of classic movies with less than stellar sequels. Blade Runner 2049, on the other hand, arguably ranks alongside Terminator 2, Aliens and Mad Max: Fury Road on the list of best sequels ever made.
Blade Runner 2049 succeeded, in no small part, because of the specific way it expanded on the 1982 original.

Unfortunately, history's also littered with film sequels that, for all their sound and fury, soon slip from memory. Chicago – Gary Oldman has been generating memorable film portrayals since he broke through in the 1980s. From Sid Vicious (“Sid and Nancy”) to Lee Harvey Oswald (“JFK”) to Jim Gordon (Dark Knight Series), Oldman is a consummate actor. That is expressed in his latest role, as Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.”
