MaryAnn’s quick take… A horror movie for grownups, dripping with the dread of a fairy tale of yore, primitive and atavistic, drawing on profound human pain and fear. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): I usually don’t find horror movies scary
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Life lesson from The Ritual: There’s no such thing as a “shortcut” through a deep dark ancient forest. Four British friends, former university pals — Rafe Spall (Swallows and Amazons), Robert James-Collier, Arsher Ali (Doctor Who), and Sam Troughton (Vera Drake) — are on a hiking weekend in a hilly Swedish wilderness when one of them hurts his knee, badly. But cutting through the woods — the lodge is right on the other side, according to their map — turns out to be, er, a really bad idea.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Charming based-on-fact British costume dramedy gently snarks about power and propriety but cuts a lot deeper when it comes to bigotry and bootlicking. I’m “biast” (pro): love Judi Dench, mostly love Stephen Frears’s films

The BBC is likely to announce its new head of film within the next two weeks, according to sources close to the process.
Scroll down for potential candidates and the original job spec
That timetable should come as a relief to those under consideration for the role and to wider industry who will want to begin building or growing their relationship with the new boss.
The job, which is considered one of the UK’s most prestigious posts, became vacant in autumn 2016 following the departure of long-time chief Christine Langan. BBC Films veteran Joe Oppenheimer has been serving as acting head of film since then.
The incoming head of film is expected to have an annual war chest of around £12m for production, cementing BBC Films’ position as one the three mainstays of public funding in the UK along with the BFI and Film4.

To celebrate the release of Philippa Lowthorpe’s adaptation of Swallows and Amazons on Blu-ray and DVD we are privileged to have an inside view on the film’s production.
In this guest editorial screenwriter Andrea Gibb takes us on her journey bringing the beloved book to the big screen.
I first got involved with ‘Swallows and Amazons’ in 2007. Nick Barton, one of the producers, had seen my film ‘Dear Frankie’ and liked it. That had a child at the centre and, as the most important characters in ‘Swallows’ are the kids, Nick felt I could write them for the screen.
I hadn’t read the book as a child but the minute he gave it to me, I fell in love. I was struck by its power as an evocation of childhood and by the simple truth of its message; children love to play, explore and imagine.

★★★★☆ Going back to basics is never a bad thing. The 2016 blockbuster season has been littered with a procession of woefully incoherent, poorly acted, CGI-dominated offerings whose money-spinning intentions have forgone one essential element of filmmaking: a good story. Those useless scurvy dogs. Mercifully, some still fly the flag for substance over style and plucky British contender Swallows and Amazons is a charming, old-fashioned adventure yarn that soars high above and away from the wreckage of vacuous, high-spending millennials. With a wealth of TV experience behind her British director Philippa Lowthorpe has set sail with Arthur Ransom's beloved children's novel and achieved a heart-racing, consistently funny and enchanting film that builds upon the original story.

Yep "Downton Abbey" fans, Dan Stevens is gone and he ain't coming back. The actor who exited the hit show with great fanfare at the end of last year has landed pretty nicely on his feet in Hollywood with roles in the upcoming Julian Assange flick "The Fifth Estate" and the Liam Neeson thriller "A Walk In The Tombstones" but now he's gearing up for something a little closer to home. The Sun actually has a legit report, revealing that the actor will star in adaptation of the British children's classic book "Swallows & Amazons." Published in 1930, and written by Arthur Ransome, the book is the first in a series (franchise!) about the Walker children and their various adventures, and in their first outing, they cross paths with pirates! Here's a synopsis of the book: The Walker children -- also known as Captain John, Mate Susan, Able-Seaman Titty, and Ship's Boy Roger...
