This Better Call Saul review contains spoilers.
Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 7
At first glance, Howard Hamlin and Lalo Salamanca couldn’t seem more different. One is a respected lawyer and an upstanding member of his community, while the other is a lethal member of the cartel — they’re worlds apart. However, in the context of “Plan and Execution,” the mid-season finale of Better Call Saul’s final season, they start to feel a lot alike. Beyond both men participating in their respective family businesses and possessing preternatural charisma, they each spend the episode rightfully believing that their biggest rival is conducting a secret, elaborate plan to undermine them.
Judging from this information, it would be easy to assume that each man would have the opportunity to confront their rival. Based on what we know about the characters, their lines of business, and their futures in this franchise, it also...

Sam Claflin is set to star in the supernatural thriller “Bagman” for Lionsgate, according to an individual with knowledge of the project. Claflin previously starred as Finnick Odair in the “Hunger Games” franchise for the studio.
Colm McCarthy is set to direct the film, which centers on a father who struggles against his deepest inner fear when his childhood monster once again returns to haunt him. Only this time the fight isn’t for himself; it’s for his family.
The film, which Lionsgate will be launching sales for in Cannes, was written by John Hulme, and will be produced by Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey.

Nothing good ever happens in the desert. That seems to be the word of caution constantly imparted by various episodes of "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul." Plenty of unfortunate characters have found themselves in such a setting — usually against their will — and never make it out. One continuous survivor of the setting and its many fatal opportunities is the silver-tongued Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk). But few episodes imprint the danger broiling out there under the arid sun than the "Better Call Saul" episode "Bagman."
It's no coincidence the episode is heavily inspired by "Lawrence of Arabia." Out in the desert, Saul...

It’s been two years since the Season 5 finale of “Better Call Saul,” leaving fans wondering what’s in store for the beloved crooked lawyer.
As Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) opens shop as Saul Goodman, Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) hints at her own breaking bad moment, with Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian) in her crosshairs. Meanwhile, Nacho Varga (Michael Mando) is on the run after playing a part in Gus Fring’s (Giancarlo Esposito) assassination attempt on Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton). Little do they know, Lalo lives to see another day after picking off Gus’ hitmen one by one in Terminator-like fashion. Meanwhile, a war is brewing between Gus and the Salamancas, with the fates of Kim and Nacho — both absent from the future events of “Breaking Bad” — looming ahead.
Here are the major developments from Season 5 that you need to know before the final season premieres.

"Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul" are many things: meticulously plotted out, nerve-wracking, exquisitely acted and directed, critically acclaimed. But one thing they are not: a great advertisement for tourism in the New Mexico desert.
From the very first episode of "Breaking Bad," and the second episode of "Better Call Saul," the desert became a place of danger, one for sketchy meetings at gunpoint, execution threats, actual executions. If an episode involves a scene in the desert, you know there is trouble, even if there is some comedy involved.

On the TV side, “The Queen’s Gambit,” “Homeland,” and “The Flight Attendant” won the major prizes, shaking up the race as we head into Emmys season.

Chloé Zhao was named the best director of 2020 at the 73rd annual Directors Guild Awards, which were presented on Saturday in a virtual ceremony.
Zhao’s win for her quiet road film “Nomadland” makes her the second woman to win the DGA Award for feature film, after Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker” in 2010. Only 10 women have ever been nominated in the category, with this year marking the first time that two female directors were nominated in the category in one year. (The other was Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman.”)
The win for Zhao comes two weeks after “Nomaldland” also won the Producers Guild Award, making it the only film to win more than one prize from the four major guilds. “The Trial of the Chicago 7” won the Screen Actors Guild’s ensemble award, while “Promising Young Woman” and “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” won Writers Guild Awards. The cinematography for “Mank,” “Nomadland,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “News of the World” and “Cherry” has been nominated as the best film work of 2020 by the American Society of Cinematographers, the Asc announced on Wednesday.
The first four of those films were expected to be recognized by the Asc and are thought to be strong contenders for the Oscar for Best Cinematography, but “Cherry” came as a surprise. The Russo brothers film came out in February to withering reviews and had not been considered an awards contender until the Asc included its cinematographer, Newton Thomas Sigel, in its list of nominees.
“Cherry” landed that nomination over a group of films that included “Tenet,” “Minari,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Judas and the Black Messiah” — and “Da 5 Bloods,” a more high-profile film that was also shot by Sigel.

“Greyhound,” “Mank,” “News of the World,” “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” have been nominated by the Cinema Audio Society for the 57th annual Cas Awards for Outstanding Sound Mixing, the Cas announced on Tuesday.
Nominees in the animated-feature category were “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon,” “Onward,” “Soul,” “The Croods: A New Age” and “Trolls World Tour,” while documentary nominations went to “David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet,” “My Octopus Teacher,” “The Social Dilemma” and two music docs, “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” and “Zappa.”
While Cas nominations have traditionally been a good barometer of which films will be nominated for Oscars in the Best Sound Mixing category, the Academy last year combined its two sound categories, mixing and editing, into a single Best Sound category.

As with the list of our favorite TV performances of 2020, this celebration of the year’s standout episodes is, at best, a fool’s errand, and we’re aiming to cover as much ground as possible. That means that we tried to steer away from anything in our respective Best Shows of 2020 selections — not completely, but we tried — on the grounds that episodes like “How to Cook the Perfect Risotto” (How To With John Wilson), “Bagman” (Better Call Saul), “The Balmoral Test” (The Crown) and “Batceañera” (Better Things) have been sufficiently honored elsewhere. Florence Pugh is producing and starring in the murder mystery “The Maid” for Universal Pictures, based on Nita Prose’s debut novel of the same name.
Universal announced Wednesday it had acquired the rights to the “The Maid,” set for publication in 2022 via Penguin Random House in the U.S. and Canada, and HarperFiction in the U.K.
The studio said the story contains elements of Gail Honeyman’s “Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine” with an Agatha Christie-esque murder mystery. It centers on Molly the maid, who leaves every room perfect and pristine, while getting to know each guest’s dirty secrets, and explores Molly’s descent into the murderous underbelly of her gilded workplace.
Joining Pugh as producers are Josh McLaughlin and Chris Goldberg, producing through their companies Wink Pictures and Winterlight Pictures, respectively. Prose will also serve as executive producer. The deal was brokered by ICM Partners...

Sometimes it feels like there’s not much of a distinction left between “television” and everything else. As major media conglomerates hold investor presentations in which they present their upcoming streaming wares as “multiple-hour movies,” how is a beleaguered television fanbase supposed to distinguish TV shows from the dreaded, amorphous concept of “content”?
By episodes, of course! Episodes are one of the last remaining hallmarks of what makes the entity known as television distinct. Though we largely watch all our entertainment on the same kinds of screens nowadays, it’s television that lays claim to distinct episodes and distinct seasons as part of their larger gestalt. The Best TV Shows of 2020 deserve our commendation (and they will receive it very soon), but so too these smaller stories and pieces within them. The Best TV Episodes of 2020 are just as important to our appreciation of the medium and its long-term health.

No, a television show isn’t just a 10-hour movie — and you know what proves that? The quality of individual episodes, which can serve as bright lights unto themselves and separate from the season’s creative work as a whole.
The distinction is important, especially in the context of binge watching. It’s all too easy to let a season’s worth of a show autoplay — yes, I am still watching, Netflix, and I don’t need the judgment right now, frankly — and for each episode to fade into a miasma of small screen entertainment. These episodes broke through the haze and demanded attention.
Below, listed in alphabetical order by show, are IndieWire’s picks for the best TV episodes of 2020:
“Better Call Saul” — “Bagman”
It’s unlikely that many viewers expected Jimmy McGill’s (Bob Odenkirk) desert excursion to acquire Lalo Salamanca’s (Tony Dalton) bail money in “Bagman” to go smoothly,...

Netflix Korean-language “Crash Landing on You” was named as the best drama series at the third running of the Asian Academy Creative Awards. Malaysia-Singapore co-production “The Garden of Evening Mists” was named as the best feature film.
Singapore actors features prominently among the performance winners. Yeo Yann Yann was named best lead actress for her role in HBO’s “Invisible Stories,” while Lina Ng was named best supporting actress for “Last Madame.”
The awards ceremony was staged over two nights within a high-tech 3D virtual environment. That made it one of the most ambitious prize shows of this coronavirus-hit year. Aaca’s red carpet merged 6 remote studios and a multitude of feeds to allow celebrities from all over the region to strut their stuff as if for real.

Last night, the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards were held, obviously under much different circumstances than normal. Conducted virtually, it was a sign of the Covid-19 times, but more or less went off without a hitch. Plus, as a general rule, people seem rather pleased with the winners. There was Schitt’s Creek pulling a sweep and becoming the first ever series to win every major comedy award in a year, including of course Best Comedy Series. There was Succession taking Best Drama Series, while Watchmen expectedly dominated the Best Limited Series field. Plus, there were even surprises, like Zendaya pulling an upset win for Best Actress in a Drama Series (for Euphoria). Overall, it seemed like a night of celebrations, which we’ve definitely needed in a big way… Here are all of your Emmy winners for 2020: Drama Series “Better Call Saul” (AMC) “The Crown” (Netflix) “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu...

Are you beloved CBC comedy Schitt’s Creek? Well then congrats, my friend, because you just had a hell of a night at the 2020 Emmy Awards!
Domination was the name of the game for the 72nd annual Emmy Awards, with only a handful of shows claiming the lion’s share of trophies in their respective genres. But among those dominant performers, no series was more overpowering than Schitt’s Creek in its final season. The Eugene and Dan Levy-created series went an astonishing seven-for-seven, winning in every category it was nominated in (becoming the first show ever to do so). This included all four acting categories, one writing category, one directing category, and the big one: Outstanding Comedy Series.

After a most unconventional awards season, the Emmys finally took place on Sunday. The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards was a night of numerous firsts.
“Schitt’s Creek” became the first series to win every major comedy award. “Watchmen’s” limited series win marked the first time a comic-book adaptation has taken home a top prize at the ceremony. Zendaya also made history with her win for lead drama actress, becoming the youngest-ever winner in the category (she turned 24 a few weeks ago) and being the first Black actor to take this trophy since “How to Get Away With Murder’s” Viola Davis in 2015.
The two series, along with “Succession,” dominated the comedy, limited series and drama fields, respectively, including nabbing the three top outstanding series trophies.
The show, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, was held virtually for the first time.

Will Succession produce a Best Actor winner? There are two options.
This was going to be the year that Bob Odenkirk finally took home an Emmy for Better Call Saul on his fifth try with a slam dunk episode submission of “Bagman.” But, like Richard Madden for Bodyguard last year, the expected frontrunner got snubbed altogether, leaving the field totally open. There are six great choices for the win. Half this field is new, and this is actually one of the first times that Golden Globe winner Brian Cox and Critics Choice winner Jeremy Strong are nominated against each other, which sets up a major showdown not unlike the one that happens between their characters on Succession.
I’ll try to avoid major plot details in my analysis – but if you'd like more spoiler-filled descriptions, click on the episode titles. Let’s consider each nominee…...

Two Emmy-snubbed performers have taken to Twitter to console each other over their cruel omissions, and “Better Call Saul” fans can’t get enough.
“Wish Rhea had been nominated, she has just killed it the past two seasons on Bcs,” Bob Odenkirk tweeted after the two of them came up short in the Emmy nominations. Rhea Seehorn then responded, “Well, I wish You had been nominated! But, Yes, you better believe we’re all proud of our #Bcs nominations.” Lead actor Odenkirk and supporting player Jonathan Banks had been nominated for every season of this “Breaking Bad” spin-off, so it’s especially strange to see them both kicked out this year. Seehorn was looking for her first Emmy bid.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Television has acquired the rights to David Henry Sterry’s memoir Master of Ceremonies: A True Story of Love, Murder, Roller Skates & Chippendales, to develop as a series. The Emmy Awards ballot for Best Drama Directing lists 295 episodes (from 156 series), so there will eight nominees in this category for the first time, per new rules. Although this category never had a guaranteed seven slots, close votes resulted in lineups of seven nominees in six of the last 15 years, including last year:
“Game of Thrones” season 8: “The Iron Throne” (David Benioff & D.B. Weiss) “Game of Thrones” season 8: “The Last of the Starks” (David Nutter) “Game of Thrones” season 8: “The Long Night” (Miguel Sapochnik) “The Handmaid’s Tale” season 2B: “Holly” (Daina Reid) “Killing Eve” season 2: “Desperate Times” (Lisa Brühlmann) Winner — “Ozark” season 2: “Reparations” (Jason Bateman) “Succession” season 1: “Celebration” (Adam McKay)
Although Jason Bateman returned as a director on “Ozark” for its third season, he cannot repeat his win, as he is instead submitting the pilot of “The Outsider,” which is next to “Ozark” on the long ballot.

The actress has long been considered one of the most overdue for a nomination, but every year the TV academy gives her coal in her Emmy stocking. When it comes to shooting on location in the deserts of New Mexico, “Better Call Saul” cinematographer Marshall Adams believes “it’s hard to point the camera at something you don’t love.” The veteran Dp shared his tricks of the trade while appearing at Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts panel, conducted virtually by managing editor Chris Beachum. Watch our exclusive video interview with Adams above.

Adams joined the acclaimed AMC series in its third season, and is submitting the fifth season episode “Bagman” for Emmy consideration. In this installment, directed by co-creator Vince Gilligan, shady lawyer Jimmy “Saul Goodman” McGill (Bob Odenkirk) gets lost in the desert with Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) after a money exchange turns deadly. “The amount of TLC that we got to put into it” really boosted the production value, Adams reveals.

Much like on “Breaking Bad,” the music on “Better Call Saul” is a vital, unmistakable extra character on the show — and one that is also very different from post-modern Western sound of the mothership. But composer Dave Porter wasn’t always sure it should’ve been.
“When we started ‘Better Call Saul,’ it was one of the harder creative things I’ve ever had to do because it was not that long after the end of ‘Breaking Bad,’” Porter explained on Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts: Composers panel (watch above). “It was all the same folks that I’ve been working with, but of course they’re asking for something as radically different as we could imagine, which is hard to do, especially when you’re coming off of something that seemed to be pretty successful for folks. When we went about to try to reinvent for ‘Better Call Saul,...

“The show is a large scale morality play” declares Gordon Smith about “Better Call Saul.” For our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), he continues, “We ask the question, ‘What should you do in a given circumstance?’ It’s often not a question that you have the option of doing something good. It’s which bad thing do you choose that is slightly better. It’s a very grey morality.”
Smith is a producer and writer of the accomplished ABC drama series. He’s been Emmy-nominated twice for writing the episodes ‘Five-o’ (2015) and ‘Chicanery’ (2017). For the most recent fifth season he made his directorial debut with an episode he wrote, ‘Namaste.’ He confesses, “I don’t know what possessed me to ask to direct. I’ve been on set a lot with the directors. Being in that chair was a lot more than I expected. I described it as...

“Better Call Saul” co-creator Vince Gilligan returned to the director’s chair this season to oversee “Bagman,” an episode that quickly became one of the most heralded from the show’s five seasons. In this eighth episode, Jimmy/Saul (Bob Odenkirk) and Mike (Jonathan Banks) are stranded in the desert as they struggle to survive against the elements and cartel hitmen. Meanwhile, Kim (Rhea Seehorn) tries to convince drug kingpin Lalo (Tony Dalton) to tell her the location of her missing husband. The Gordon Smith-penned episode deserves to rake in a boatload of Emmys, both above the line and behind the lens, but there’s one catch: “Better Call Saul” has never won an Emmy Award.
