D-Day

First Sgt. Bud Lommell is a nod to Leonard "Bud" Lommell who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his part in disabling guns at Pointe Du Hoc on the morning of June 6th. Lommell was given a battlefield commission shortly after the action. He was wounded three times, the last at the Battle of Bulge, after which he was discharged from the Army. After the war he became an attorney. He lived to the age of 91.

In 1994, he was inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame.

At the beginning of the movie, a sailor stops to salute the major. Sailors do not salute inboard a ship unless they are reporting to an officer on watch or reporting to the CO at Captain's Mast for non-judicial punishment (UCMJ Article 15).
