The “East of Eden” limited series adaptation at Netflix is rounding out its cast.
Variety has learned that Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, Ciarán Hinds, Joseph Zada, and Joe Anders have all joined the series.
They will appear alongside previously announced cast members Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, and Hoon Lee.
Letts will play Cyrus Trask, while Plimpton will play Faye, Hinds will play Samuel Hamilton, Zada will play Cal Trask, and Anders will play Aron Trask.
Based on the John Steinbeck novel of the same name, the series is said to “explore the multigenerational saga of the Trask family, focusing new attention on its indelible antihero, Cathy Ames (Pugh).”
Production on the seven-episode series is now underway in New Zealand. In addition to writing, Zoe Kazan serves as executive producer and co-showrunner. Her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the original film adaptation starring James Dean. Jeb Stuart serves as co-showrunner and executive producer as well.

Produced by horror maestro James Wan, the man behind “The Conjuring” and “Insidious” franchises, and developed and showrun by “Yellowstone” and “Chicago Fire” writer/producer Ian McCulloch, Peacock’s upcoming thriller “Teacup” is looking to frighten audiences right in time for Halloween. The series is adapted from Robert McCammon’s New York Times bestseller, “Stinger,” which follows a collection of differing personalities as they unite to fight against a horrifying creature set on destroying a small, rural community. Moving the narrative from Texas to Georgia, “Teacup” stars Yvonne Strahovski (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Scott Speedman (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Rob Morgan (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”), and Chaske Spencer (“Banshee”) and premieres on Peacock Thursday, October 10, with two episodes airing weekly through Halloween.

Nestor Carbonell (“Shōgun”) won his first ever Emmy Award for Best Drama Guest Actor at Sunday night’s Creative Arts ceremony in downtown Los Angeles. The journeyman performer from “Lost,” “The Morning Show,” “Suddenly Susan” and “Bates Motel” had never been nominated at the Emmys before. He was also a Gold Derby TV Awards winner in the same category a few weeks ago.
He defeated Paul Dano (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”), Tracy Letts (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”), Jonathan Pryce (“Slow Horses”) and John Turturro (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”). According to Gold Derby odds, he was the favorite at 82/25 odds to prevail in this guest star category.

For the first time since 2006, every current Best Drama Guest Actor Emmy nominee is new to the category. The seemingly unflappable leader of the pack is general first-timer Néstor Carbonell of “Shōgun,” whose expected victory could be one of 22 for the freshman series, the 1980 limited version of which took three out of a possible 12 TV academy prizes.
Carbonell’s strongest competitor is John Turturro (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”), who has an advantage in this race in that he won the corresponding comedy award for “Monk” two decades ago. Also in the running are former limited series supporting nominees Paul Dano (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) and Jonathan Pryce (“Slow Horses”) as well as Emmys newcomer Tracy Letts, whose “Winning Time” bid came as a surprise to most predictors.
In order to determine whether Carbonell truly has this contest sewn up, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure...

The 2024 Emmys lineup for Best Drama Directing was a free-for-all, resulting in one of the most diverse group of shows and nominees in recent memory. The lineup includes two premieres (“Slow Horses” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”), two finales (“The Crown” and “The Morning Show”), and two penultimate showcases (“Shōgun” and “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”). With none of the shows nominated last year (or their last eligibility), anything is possible, but there looks to be a clear frontrunner in this category based on the quality of the episodes and the popularity of the series.
Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Drama Directing Emmy 2024 racetrack odds:
1. “Shōgun” (“Crimson Sky” by Frederick E.O. Toye) — 10/3 odds
2. “The Crown” — 4/1 odds
3. “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” (“First Date” by Hiro Murai) — 5/1 odds
4. “Slow Horses” (“Strange Games” by Saul Metzstein) — 6/1 odds

Chloë Curran has worked in casting departments on big TV shows like “Station 19” and “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” and experienced the increasingly rare, wonderful world of a small-budget film on “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret.” And amid all the work of a network casting team — creating character breakdowns, combing through audition tapes, and interrupting agents’ Friday nights to sew up offers — she realized something.

Season 2 of HBO’s “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” continues to follow the rivalry between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics as they fight for the NBA championships. For Emmy-nominated cinematographer Todd Banhazl, ASC. shooting the playoffs was important, but capturing the emotion inside the game was essential.
Speaking with Variety’s Inside the Frame, for Variety Artisans presented by HBO Banhazl explained his first challenge: How would the cameras keep up to tell this story? “A lot of it became about what camera devices can keep up and stay close to the actors. For the Los Angeles Lakers of the 1980s, “Showtime” was more than a catchy nickname — it changed the game of basketball. And the first season of “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” dramatically captured how it all started in 1979 with Dr. Jerry Buss (John C. Riley) purchasing the team and their ace in the hole: a No. 1 draft pick named Earvin “Magic” Johnson (Quincy Isaiah). For its second season, the desire was to develop an immersive journey that brings viewers courtside while connecting a progressing narrative to each character’s dynamic viewpoint. The result is an alluring spectacle that feels like an imaginative ride that takes you straight back to the Lakers’ golden age.

That octopus book is heading to the screen.
Netflix has picked up a film package that adapts Remarkably Bright Creatures, the wildly popular novel by Shelby Van Pelt.
Sally Field, the veteran actress last seen in 80 for Brady, is in talks to star in the feature that is to be directed by Olivia Newman, perhaps best known for helming Where the Crawdads Sing. Newman is also writing the script with John Whittington.
Producing the adaptation will be David Levine via Anonymous Content along with Bryan Unkeless (I, Tonya) and Peter Craig, the established screenwriter of The Town and The Batman. Craig is also Field’s son.
The novel tells of the unique relationship between a lonely woman working as a janitor at an aquarium and a giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus living at the facility.
The woman is grieving the death of her husband and also still processing the disappearance...

Editor’s note: This post has been updated to include more information on how the Lead Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series categories expanded.
To say these past five years have been a rollercoaster for the television industry would be an understatement. Through a global pandemic and a full work stoppage as the WGA and SAG struck for fair wages, we have seen the amount of TV shows vastly expand and contract, making each annual set of Emmy nominations feel fresh (even if some shows still win every year.)
Barely giving us a chance to breathe after the postponed 2023 Emmys happened just this January, the 2024 Primetime Emmy nominations tell a whole new, post-strike story where some of the shows that have been on the nominations bubble for years finally popped. Meanwhile new series, which usually have a premium on awards nominations, did not fare as well as expected.

“Shōgun” and “The Bear” dominated the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations as anticipated — but not that much. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss all the nomination surprises and snubs.
“Shōgun” led all shows with 25 nominations, affirming its status as the drama series to beat. But the FX epic didn’t clean up as much as it could have, missing a Best Drama Actor bid for Cosmo Jarvis and the Best Drama Supporting Actress lineup entirely. It also only got one episode from its six (over-)submissions into Best Drama Directing, which is a blessing in disguise since triple nominations could’ve led to a vote-split. How did it come up short in these places?
See Experts slugfest: Our final 2024 Emmy nominations predictions

Carrie Coon started her Wednesday with extreme fatigue from lack of sleep and a full house of visiting family when she learned about her first nomination for playing socialite Bertha Russell in HBO’s The Gilded Age.
But it wasn’t until she learned that her husband Tracy Letts received a nomination for playing Jack McKinney on HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise Of The Lakers Dynasty did she actually start to cry. The Gilded Age ended up earning six nominations — including one for Best Drama and another for Supporting Actress for Christine Baranski — but she was more giddy to be the one to inform her husband about his shout-out in the guest-starring actor category.
“I sent a video to my husband and said, ‘Tracy, you have an Emmy nomination. Oh my God,'” she tells Deadline. “I Immediately started to cry, and my family said, ‘you weren’t crying when you got a nomination,...

The upcoming nominations for the best in television have been announced. The list of this year’s nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmys has been announced today by actors Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale in Hollywood. This year’s event has a rare distinction of taking place less than a year after the last event, which had been postponed to January of this year due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes that lasted for a bigger part of the summer and fall in 2023. Last year’s Emmys included winners from such shows as The Bear, Abbott Elementary and HBO’s massively popular series Succession. The ceremony is set to take place on September 15, exactly eight months after the 75th Primetime Emmys were presented on Fox. The Hollywood Reporter has listed the nominations for this year, so here are the 2024 Emmy nominees:

I’ve been covering the Emmy Awards since the early 1980s, which admitted makes me something of a fossil. It’s a little bit like hearing my grandparents talking about paying a nickel to go to the movies in the early 1900s. Yes, when I started covering the Emmys, there were just ABC, NBC and CBS and a (very) little PBS. There wasn’t even a Fox yet. If you were on HBO, Showtime or TNT, you were out of luck. You had to compete for something called the CableACE Awards, which stood for “Cable Awards for Cable Excellence Awards.” Not too redundant, huh? HBO was winning everything at the CableACEs every year, so there had ceased to be a point to their ongoing existence.
Cable and syndicated programming finally gained overdue admittance to the Emmy party in 1988. And it would be 20 more years before streaming/broadband shows received the...

Exclusive: Kat Cunning (Rap Sh!t), McCabe Slye (Fear Street), Connor Paolo (The Last Stop in Yuma County) and Eddie Martinez (Night Swim) are set to topline Star People, an independently financed sci-fi drama marking the first narrative feature from writer-director Adam Finberg (The Business of Recovery), which has wrapped production in and around the Phoenix area.
Also in the cast are Martinez’s daughter Adriana Aluna Martinez (Max’s Duster), who here makes her feature debut, and Bradley Fisher (Beau Is Afraid).
Inspired by The Phoenix Lights of 1997, the largest mass UFO sighting in U.S. history, which saw assorted unidentified flying objects observed in the skies over the southwestern U.S., Star People tells the story of a photographer who receives a tip that could finally shed light on her childhood UFO sighting, though a deadly heatwave and unexpected guests threaten to derail her obsessive search for answers.

As TV academy voters fill out their 2024 Emmy nominations ballots, they will have to consider 107 shows for Best Drama Series. This is down by 56 contenders compared to last year. As was the case in 2023, members may not allow their selections to exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which, in this case, will be eight.
2023 Best Drama Series winner “Succession” and six of the seven also-rans are out of the current race because they did not air new episodes during the June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024 qualifying period. This leaves “The Crown” as the only 2023 nominee eligible for an immediate return, which could lead to its second victory here following its first in 2021.
Remember, only eight of the shows below will earn bids for Best Drama Series when the Emmy nominations are announced on July 17. Which do you think will make the cut?

A riveting locker room speech can be the difference maker in truly selling the emotion of a sports TV show or movie. And Adrien Brody delivers an exquisite amount of them to the Los Angeles Lakers in his turn as real-life coach Pat Riley on HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. The series depicts the legendary Showtime era of the LA Lakers, which saw players like Magic Johnson (Quincy Isaiah), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Solomon Hughes), Norm Nixon, and more. Plus, Celtics icon Larry Bird (Sean Patrick Small) makes multiple appearances. And Brody’s Riley is at the center of it all. To celebrate his triumphant ability to gas up, grill, or simply get his guys into grind mode, TV Insider caught up with Brody to look back at one of those scenes and learn a bit more about what went into his performance for TV Insider’s Scene Study series.

When the Emmy nominations are announced July 17, something will happen that hasn’t happened in 50 years: The nominees for best drama series will include only one previously nominated show, Netflix’s The Crown. I would love to be able to say that’s because there are so many great dramas out there and that TV Academy members are diligently watching them and championing different great ones this year. But the truth is, this field, historically among the strongest each season, now looks like a wasteland.
Such perennial nominees as HBO’s Succession and Westworld and AMC’s Better Call Saul have ended, along with second-tier contenders like Paramount+’s The Good Fight and Star Trek: Picard. Some ongoing, previously nominated shows were not back in time to be eligible, in some cases because of delays caused by the writers and actors strikes, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, Squid Game and Bodyguard; HBO/Max’s Euphoria,...

Think about how competitive the Emmy race is: There are so many excellent shows that deserve attention yet fail to make the nomination cut because they’re either not considered one of the frontrunners or they air on a broadcast network. That’s rough.
Now, imagine being a critically acclaimed drama on a premium network/streaming hybrid in a season where the drama race is pretty wide open. You’ve got big stars, high production values and well-known source material. Shoo-in, right?
Not if you’ve been canceled. (Cue sad trombone sound effect.) That’s the unfortunate fate of “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” the HBO series executive produced by Adam McKay that continued to earn raves in Season 2 for its heightened, not-quite-accurate-but-entertainingly-close-enough take on the 1980s rise of the “Showtime”-era Los Angeles Lakers. “Winning Time” should be in the awards conversation … but wound up getting canceled in September.

Since The Last Update
With the June 13 start of Emmy nominations voting just three weeks away, the race is beginning to come into focus.
The drama series competition, which was looking incredibly bleak (with only one past nominee even eligible for a nomination this season, Netflix’s The Crown), is suddenly getting exciting. FX announced that Shōgun, which was expected to be a one-off limited series, will, in fact, be getting additional seasons, making it a drama series — and the new frontrunner for that prize and several related categories. But Amazon, far from conceding the category, is making a big push for its breakout rookie show, Fallout, which has amassed a sizable fanbase and overtaken Mr. and Mrs. Smith on the streamer’s list of priorities. (On Tuesday, they called in the big guns by having showrunner Jonathan Nolan interviewed by his big brother Christopher in front of a massive crowd of voters.

Plot: The incredible true story of Hollywood revolution meeting social revolution: it’s a wild caper of Black Panther founder Huey Newton escaping from the FBI to Cuba with the help of famed producer Bert Schneider in an impossibly elaborate plan – involving a fake movie production — that goes wrong every way it possibly can. And somehow, it’s all true. Mostly.
Review: The stories of revolutionary political figures and social reformers have been popular for big and small screen adaptations for decades. There seems to be more focus on the 1960s and 1970s than any other period in American history. The 2021 film Judas and the Black Messiah looked at controversial figure Fred Hampton, while this year’s Shirley chronicled Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s run for United States President. Today, Apple TV+ revealed the trailer for “The Big Cigar,” the upcoming limited series led by André Holland, who stars alongside Alessandro Nivola, Tiffany Boone, P. J. Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Moses Ingram, Rebecca Dalton, Olli Haaskivi, Jordane Christie and Glynn Turman. “The Big Cigar” makes its global debut on May 17 with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes every Friday through June 14.
Based on the magazine article of the same name by Joshuah Bearman (“Argo”), who also serves as executive producer, “The Big Cigar” tells the incredible true story of Hollywood revolution meeting social revolution. It’s a wild caper about Black Panther founder Huey P. Newton escaping from the FBI to Cuba with the assistance of famed producer Bert Schneider in an impossibly elaborate plan — involving a fake movie production — that goes wrong every way it possibly can.
NAACP Image Award winner Janine Sherman Barrois is the showrunner of “The Big Cigar.

Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Supporting Actor, take a tour of our photo gallery showcasing the men most likely to land in the lineup. Last year’s race was completely dominated by actors from “Succession” and “The White Lotus,” neither of which can produce nominees this time since the former ended last May and the latter won’t return until 2025.
Naturally, this category’s sole presently eligible former winner – Billy Crudup – has emerged as the frontrunner. Among his likeliest competitors are two of his own cast mates: 2020 nominee Mark Duplass and series newcomer Jon Hamm, who won the 2015 Best Drama Actor Emmy for “Mad Men” and is widely expected to take this year’s limited series lead prize for “Fargo.”
Other outside winners in the mix include James Cromwell (“Sugar”; formerly of “American Horror Story”), Nathan Lane (“The Gilded Age”; “Only Murders in the Building”), and...

André Holland takes on the role of revolutionary Huey P. Newton in the trailer for Apple TV+’s The Big Cigar.
Far from a straight biopic about the founder of the Black Panther Party, the six-episode limited series based on Joshuah Bearman’s magazine article of the same name delivers the high-impact energy of a heist as it tells the story of how Newton escaped the FBI and fled to Cuba with the help of famed Hollywood producer Bert Schneider (played by Alessandro Nivola) in perhaps the most ambitiously staged and fake movie production of all time.
“You’re the hot-shot producer, man, produce this,” Newton tells Schneider as they begin to cook up an elaborate plan to help the political activist evade a murder charge, as police attempt to pin him for the death of a 17-year-old sex trafficking victim in 1974.

Preparing to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Actor? Be sure to take a look through our photo gallery highlighting the likeliest potential nominees. In the absence of reigning champ Kieran Culkin (“Succession”), whose show ended last May, possible category newcomer Hiroyuki Sanada (“Shōgun”) has emerged as the clear frontrunner.
None of the six actors who competed for this prize last year – including “Succession” stars Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong – are involved in the current race. Rounding out that group were Bob Odenkirk of the long-concluded “Better Call Saul” and ongoing series leads Jeff Bridges (“The Old Man”) and Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”). Naturally, this opens the door for dozens of potential first-time contenders.
The only 2024 hopeful who has previously been recognized in this category is Timothy Olyphant, who received a 2011 bid for the role he currently plays on “Justified: City Primeval,” a continuation of “Justified.” The...
