McKenna Grace reprises her lead role as Phoebe in “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” which led the weekend box office with $45 million. At 17 she is not yet a household name, but she laid some groundwork early: At age six she had a supporting role on the Disney Channel sitcom “Crash & Bernstein.” Later she received an Emmy nomination for her work in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and portrayed the younger selves for the leads in movies like “I, Tonya” and “Captain Marvel.”
Her “Ghostbusters” co-star is Finn Wolfhard, who made his debut at 13 in CW’s “Supernatural” before starring in “Stranger Things” and “It.” Zendaya, star of “Dune: Part Two,” got her start as a Disney Channel regular. Her co-star, Oscar-nominated Austin Butler, cut his teeth at Nickelodeon.

Richard Burton was one of the most influential actors of the 60s and one of the highest-paid actors at the time. He was known for his signature baritone voice and became a Shakespearean actor. He played Hamlet in the 1964 Broadway production of the popular play by William Shakespeare, where his performance was lauded by the general public.

The historical epic “Becket” is turning 60 this week. When it was released, “Becket” was considered Important. It was a huge and handsome production with sumptuous sets and costumes and a cast seemingly of thousands. And it featured two of the top and sexiest stars of the day – Peter O’Toole, fresh from his Oscar-nominated triumph in 1962’s “Lawrence of Arabia” and Richard Burton whose career had been overshadowed with his high-profile love affair with Elizabeth Taylor that began during the production of the infamous 1963 “Cleopatra.”
Set in the 12th century England, “Becket” revolves around the relationship between the hedonistic King Henry II (O’Toole), who never met a wench he didn’t bed, and Thomas Becket, his loyal friend and wingman for Henry’s sexual escapades. And because the Production Code was still in force, the film can only imply that Henry is in love with Becket. Henry makes Becket his...

Over Hollywood’s century-long history, women have played an integral part both as actresses on the screen, as well as creators behind the scenes. Many have fought to establish themselves in a male-dominated world, and have earned their place in history alongside the best, even managing to show out at the most prestigious awards ceremony — the Academy Awards. In celebration of Women’s History Month 2024, and the recent 96th Oscars ceremony, following is a list of 26 women who have earned eight or more Oscar nominations. Scroll through our photo gallery below.

Historians describe the Egyptian queen Cleopatra as "a woman of surpassing beauty." Who better to star in the 1963 film's titular role than Elizabeth Taylor, one of the most stunning starlets of Old Hollywood? While there have been rumors of "Cleopatra" remakes from directors like David Fincher or Denis Villeneuve, as well as a recent rumor of a version from the "Wonder Woman" team Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot, none can match what /Film writer Ben Pearson calls a "tremendous piece of old-school filmmaking that exemplifies the type of opulent excesses that pervaded the Old Hollywood era."

It could have been worse: The final domestic weekend totals for “Blade Runner 2049” came to $32.7 million, about $1.25 million better than initial pre-Sunday estimates. That could mean all is not lost for Warner Bros. — but with production, marketing, and distribution around $300 million, it’s still a dreadful result. Who stands to suffer the most? Here are some losers — and, some possible winners.
Alcon Entertainment and Sony
Alcon, the 20 year-old production company founded by FedEx’s Fred Smith, has produced 31 films, with one big moneymaker (“The Blind Side”), some smaller successes (“Dude, Where’s My Car?,” “P.S. I Love You,” “Insomnia”) and several higher-budget flops (“Transcendence,” “Point Break”).
Its total investment in “Blade Runner 2049” isn’t totally clear. Sony is reported to have contributed $90 million for international rights, with its share of marketing expenses uncertain. So Alcon will neither bear the entire expense nor keep all the revenues, but it...

Denis Villeneuve says he'd find directing a James Bond film a "deep pleasure"...
The speculation machine surrounding the upcoming James Bond film has been pointing in Denis Villenueve’s direction. The director of the likes of Blade Runner 2049, Sicario and Arrival was said to be on a shortlist of directors for James Bond 25. That said, he’s also juggling the new take on Dune, and a remake of Cleopatra.
In a new interview with Time Out, Villeneuve was asked about the speculation. And intriguingly, he didn’t rule himself out of the running. More than that, he said when asked about directing Bond that “I cannot talk about that. But let’s say that for me to do a Bond movie would be a deep, deep pleasure”.
Which begs the question: just why can’t he talk about it? Joining the dots would suggest that means...

The good news about “Blade Runner 2049,” which Warner Bros. and Alcon have been showing gingerly to thin slivers of press, is that it’s a gorgeous cinematic spectacle that more than lives up to its advance hype. What are they so worried about?
Well, the epic sequel set 30 years after the brilliant Ridley Scott 1982 original looks a lot more expensive than its $150 million official budget, and the original movie — which this builds and expands upon with care and finesse — was a critically hailed succès d’estime that failed at the box office. Scott’s influential future noir, which inspired generations of subsequent cinematic dystopias and came remarkably close to predicting what big-scale megalopolises like Los Angeles and Beijing look like today, has built its cult cred over decades.

Following ecstatic early reviews for “Blade Runner 2049,” Denis Villeneuve is in talks to helm Sony Pictures’ epic “Cleopatra” remake. Producers Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal optioned the best-selling 2010 biography “Cleopatra: A Life,” by Stacy Schiff. James Cameron, Paul Greengrass, and David Fincher were previously in the running, but Deadline reports that Villeneuve is at the top of the list. Villeneuve is quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s most coveted directors, with “Prisoners,” “Sicario,” “Arrival,” and now “Blade Runner 2049,” which has critics raving. The director is also developing a remake of “Dune,” the sci-fi classic by Frank Herbert, with Legendary Entertainment.
It has been rumored that Angelina Jolie would play the legendary Egyptian queen, but Sony would be wise to heed recent charges of whitewashing that have tanked other blockbusters. The script has seen three different scribes so far: David Scarpa, Eric Roth and Brian Helgeland.

The director of Blade Runner 2049, Denis Villenueve is lining up another directing gig. According to Deadline, he's in talks with Sony Pictures to helm one of their highest profile films... Cleopatra.
The film is said to be an "epic female empowerment story of one of history’s most complex heroines." It will be an adaptation of the biography written by Stacy Schiff. The film project has already gone through a few directors including James Cameron, Ang Lee, Paul Greengrass, Martin Scorsese, and David Fincher. It looks like Villenueve might be their lucky charm.
The filmmaker has helmed some amazing films such as Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival. Blade Runner 2049 is also getting amazing reviews, many of which are calling the film a masterpiece. It would be great if he ended up taking the gig because I know he would do some great things with it.

David O Russell’s movie about the hard-scrub single mum who became queen of QVC after inventing a self-wringing mop is a dreamlike curio whose flights of surreal fancy curb the director’s trademark zaniness
David O Russell’s Joy is an intriguing but weirdly subdued and stylised film starring Jennifer Lawrence – who incidentally achieves new heights of imperious beauty. If Lawrence carries on like this, Angelina Jolie’s projected new Cleopatra movie will have to be recast.
Joy unspools on a level tone of ironised dreaminess, like an extended pre-credit sequence or 120-minute voiceover montage. It is about the real-life inventor and single mother Joy Mangano, who got rich in the 1990s selling her own revolutionary self-wringing mop on the QVC home shopping channel – while battling with condescending male corporate types and various members of her own massively dysfunctional extended family.

Angelina Jolie Pitt is currently promoting her new movie "By the Sea," which she wrote, directed, produced, and stars in alongside husband Brad Pitt. But while the New York Times had her handy, they asked for her reaction to those hacked Sony e-mails.

In December, when Sony's computer systems were hacked and its executives' emails leaked, a beef between Angelina Jolie and former Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal was born. One leaked email revealed that Pascal and producer Scott Rudin traded jokes and bashed her after Jolie insisted on having David Fincher direct her Cleopatra drama. After the leaks, at The Hollywood Reporter's Women in Entertainment breakfast, Jolie and Pascal were photographed together for the first time, and Angelina's seemingly icy glare suggested that she might very well have Pascal killed, or at least make her watch several Jennifer Aniston films. But, as it turns out, that was not the case! In an interview with the New York Times, Jolie reveals that all she felt for Pascal was concern. Jolie says, "There are certain things that bother me and certain things that don’t. Personal attacks on me? I think I’m just...

Angelina Jolie is finally speaking up on her role as collateral damage in the 2014 hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment. After leaked emails revealed a brutal exchange about the actress from executives Amy Pascal and Scott Rudin — in which they bashed the star and a Cleopatra film she was attempting to make — the actress and director said her initial reaction was sympathetic. “There are certain things that bother me and certain things that don’t. Personal attacks on me? I think I’m just so used to it,” Jolie said in a wide-ranging interview with the New York Times published Wednesday.

Penned by Aaron Sorkin, and with David Fincher long attached to direct, it seemed that the only thing separating this cybermensch biopic from 'The Social Network' was the absence of Jesse Eisenberg's trademark sneer. It wasn't until December's infamous Sony leaks, however, that we learned Amy Pascal and Scott Rudin "thought differently" to such an extent that the project was almost lost forever. Now directed by Danny Boyle, 'Steve Jobs' still looks like it's got a shot to be great (you can't find a much better replacement for Bale than Fassbender -- ditto for Fincher and Boyle) but it won't be as good as 'The Social Network.

Things are looking up at Sony. Two producers with great taste, ex-Sony chief Amy Pascal and ex-Warners boss Jeff Robinov, will make big-budget movies for their respective labels, while ex-Fox head Tom Rothman, who also knows a good movie when he sees one, will run the movie studio. For the moment, Sony's in-house production label Columbia is being run by Doug Belgrad, with ex-Sony lot producer Michael De Luca working with Hannah Minghella as co-presidents of production. Expect both Pascal and De Luca to work with powerful New York producer and literary tastemonger Scott Rudin, who will no longer be working on "Cleopatra" with Angelina Jolie, but is pursuing a reboot of the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" franchise without free-spending David Fincher. Rumors are running rampant about casting, but I hear a deal is imminent. Rooney Mara was tight with Fincher, but she must have a contract. Now De...

In the wake of Amy Pascal’s exit Thursday, Hollywood and Wall Street focused on the fates of her Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chair Michael Lynton, an aging Spider-Man and Angelina Jolie’s remake of “Cleopatra.” What was next for them, or who would be named as Pascal’s replacement, wasn’t clear to industry insiders and analysts. But they were certain that the job will be a tremendous challenge for whoever steps in. “They’re going to be playing catch-up to the other studios for years, because they don’t have a viable signature franchise and just about everybody else does,...

The news that Amy Pascal will step down as chairwoman of Sony Pictures is not shocking. In fact, it was expected.* This is how Hollywood works. You spend years running a studio or acting as president of production and then something goes wrong and you segue to a “producing” deal. That’s the way it’s been for almost 30 years and that’s the way it will be for the foreseeable future. Surviving any controversy, even one outside of your own control, is simply impossible. *Although forgive our surprise this wasn’t left to a late Friday afternoon announcement to quell reaction from the cable news talking heads. Pascal’s fate was sealed when numerous E-mail conversations she was a part of were leaked after a massive security breach credited to North Korean hackers took place on Nov. 24. Her E-mail exchange with producer Scott Rudin about the President of the...

Yes, there's more. It's safe to say that producer Scott Rudin and Angelina Jolie are not exactly the best of friends, as evidenced in the latest batch of leaked emails from the Sony hack posted by Gawker, in which Rudin calls the superstar "out of her mind." The point of tension in this particular case was centered on Jolie's planned Cleopatra biopic, which the actress wanted David Fincher to direct while Rudin wanted him for the Steve Jobs movie. The emails date back to December 2013, when [...]...

The chatter about Angelina Jolie's ways of doing business didn't begin and end with the hanging-in-the-balance Steve Jobs movie. In a new batch of leaked emails obtained and excerpted by Gawker, producer Scott Rudin and Sony exec Amy Pascal's back-and-forth continues, this time with regard to Jolie's passion project about Cleopatra—the role she has publicly said could be her swan song if playing the Egyptian queen is satisfying enough. Before Rudin went on to call her a "spoiled brat" for insisting on director David Fincher for her own film while he was trying to secure the filmmaker for the Jobs movie, Pascal had written to Jolie in November 2013, "You are a...

Seth Rogen and James Franco's The Interview is now much more than just a movie.
The comedy, about an assassination attempt on North Korea leader Kim Jong-un, has been pulled from release after hackers issued a terror threat against cinemas planning to show the film.
The massive security breach at Sony Pictures Entertainment (The Interview's backers) has seen personal emails and data combed over and made public, ripping back the curtain on one of Hollywood's biggest studios and exposing the inner workings of a multinational corporation.

Hollywood — "Unbroken" is Angelina Jolie's second directorial effort to date, but she bit off a whole lot more than she expected to chew. The production became a huge undertaking, particularly at the script stage when a number of various elements could have been included from the epic life of Louis Zamperini. So it was as important as ever to do a lot of heavy lifting on the page. I sat down with Jolie last week to discuss those particulars, taking a risk on unknowns in the film's central roles and how Sidney Lumet's "The Hill" informed the look of the film. Read through the back and forth below for that and other tidbits. And check out our recent video interview at the top of this post for even more. "Unbroken" opens Christmas Day. *** HitFix: Before we jump in here, I just wanted to say I'm glad to see...

Sony has been taking hit after hit ever since anonymous hackers breached the company’s systems on November 24. The culprits, who may or may not be tied to North Korea, a country enraged about Sony’s upcoming Kim Jong Un assassination comedy The Interview, have not only leaked dozens of the company’s latest films, including this year’s Fury, but also hundreds of private internal emails. Mega producer Scott Rudin and Sony Pictures Entertainment Co-Chairman Amy Pascal came out looking the worst, with exchanges between two the spitting vitriol at Angelina Jolie, Kevin Hart, and Aaron Sorkin, among others.
However, regardless of how clear their messages seem to be, plenty of them were completely misunderstood. So, we’re here to clear up any confusion by placing the misinterpreted emails in the right context.
*Completely fictional context that we’ve made up to hopefully make this entire situation a little easier to laugh at.

As I'm sure you're well aware, a massive hacking of Sony Pictures has taken place, which has resulted in a flurry of revelations as emails between Sony executives and their contacts have been made public. A variety of outlets have covered the story in detail and it all reads like a dirty memoir, while at the same time offers fascinating insight into an industry that somehow manages to keep a lot of its dirty laundry quiet. You hear rumblings every now and then, but nothing too damning or revealing. With this recent hack the studio has reportedly had to suspend filming on some of its features as it can't process payments and in our first story looking at the fallout we'll take a look at the saga of one film that was once in Sony's hands and how it came to find its way to Universal. Myself and my podcast...

David Fincher has dropped out as the director of Angelina Jolie’s Cleopatra project at Sony Pictures. The studio executives are now looking at possibly hiring Martin Scorsese to direct the movie. The studio has already had a meeting with the director, and thanks to overtice.com.br, we have details on the proposal for him to direct the movie from an email sent by Mark Wyman to studio executives. The email also reveals that the director wants to bring Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis to the project as well. (Note: All quoted emails have been retranslated back into English from Portuguese.)
“He had a conversation with Rick. He said that Marty is interesting, but the proposal will have to ‘impress him’ and he will want a good rate of development and producer credit. He mentioned that he will begin shooting Silence soon, you know something about this film?“He...

The Sony Pictures hack has been a trending topic for weeks now, with headlines getting juicier and juicier as reporters comb through material. (Even Saturday Night Live has taken note - James Franco and Seth Rogen made light of the scandal in a recent episode.) While some information poses threats to Sony's stars and products, other pieces provide a window into the inner workings of Hollywood. Read on to find out what we've learned about Jennifer Lawrence, Beyoncé, Angelina Jolie, Kanye West, and more stars affected by the massive hack. Kanye West will reportedly appear in a holiday movie costarring Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, which is expected to hit theaters next year. In 2013, Beyoncé's dad, Matthew Knowles, reportedly approached Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper about a Destiny's Child biopic. "Do we think it would be a successful film? They're on Sony label. I'm just not sure that it's not too soon,...

In spite of the innumerable blunders swirling inside and around the studio right now (at this point, we won't even go there), Sony premiered "The Interview" in Los Angeles last night with guns blazing—only to be met by divisive critical reaction. But will mixed feelings about the film and ill will toward controversy-courting studio chiefs Amy Pascal and Scott Rudin hurt its box office chances? If nothing else, publicity is being unintentionally generated by the ballyhoo abound, including the rumors that North Korea perpetrated the Sony cyber-attack scandal, demanding that Sony pull this supposedly anti-North Korean comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco. If looks could kill . . . Amy Pascal would be in serious trouble. The Sony Pictures Entertainment cochair was snapped greeting Angelina Jolie at The Hollywood Reporter's Women in Entertainment Power 100 breakfast in La on Wednesday, just a few hours after hacked emails of Amy discussing Angelina with producer Scott Rudin were released online. The emails featured a long conversation between Amy and Scott about the forthcoming Steve Jobs biopic, and at one point, Amy told Scott that Angelina was not happy that they picked up David Fincher to direct it, as she had her eye set on him to direct her own passion project, a new Cleopatra film. Scott said, "She'll survive it. I don't want to waste my time on this." However, Angelina apparently persisted in trying to nab David for the Cleopatra flick, which angered Scott, who feared that she might delay production of the already-troubled Jobs film. Scott wrote,...

Angelina Jolie has bumped into Sony chief Amy Pascal for the first time since a heated email exchange concerning the star was leaked online.
The fiery messages between Pascal and producer Scott Rudin saw the latter refer to Jolie as a "minimally talented spoiled brat".
Jolie and Pascal were both attending the annual Women in Entertainment Breakfast in Los Angeles earlier this week, celebrating this year's 100 most powerful women in the entertainment industry.
The Unbroken director was at the star-studded ceremony to present a scholarship to Loyola Marymount University's Megan Castillo.
She bumped into Pascal backstage at the event, at which point Pascal put her arms on Jolie's shoulder as if to embrace her, while Jolie's face remained expressionless.
According to the leaked emails, Jolie had wanted friend and director David Fincher to leave the Steve Jobs project to direct her Cleopatra movie instead, an idea which Rudin appeared to disagree with.

The Nov. 24 Sony hacking has become a public relations nightmare for the company after employees' personal email exchanges were leaked online. In one exchange, posted on Gawker Dec. 9, producer Scott Rudin called Angelina Jolie "a minimally talented spoiled brat" in emails with Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal. In another, Rudin and Pascal made a series of racial jokes about President Barack Obama. Rudin has since apologized for his comments about Obama, telling Deadline: "I made a series of remarks that were meant only to be funny, but in the cold light of day, they are in fact thoughtless and insensitive … I'm profoundly and deeply sorry.

Hackers continue to leak documents from Sony, and the latest batch includes what looks to be an exchange of heated emails between producer Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, that criticize Angelina Jolie and Adam Driver. The purported exchange between Pascal and Rudin is about the notion that Jolie wanted Fincher to direct her in a Cleopatra movie—and how they don't want that to happen. "There is no movie of Cleopatra to be made (and how that is a bad thing given the insanity and rampaging ego of this woman and the cost of the...

For those of you who want to know more about why the Steve Jobs movie left Sony and went to Universal, it's all there in the emails, as studio chief Amy Pascal (who we now know earns base salary of $3 million a year, along with her studio partner Michael Lynton), and "A Social Network" producer Rudin dicker over David Fincher's involvement in "Cleopatra," written by Eric Roth and starring Jolie, as well as Danny Boyle's "Jobs," which Rudin finally withdrew from Sony as Pascal begged him to keep the project at Sony and let her make it work. For those of us who know these bigger-than-life Hollywood moguls, it's fun to see the power playing and emotional manipulation--obviously, these two people share longstanding mutual respect and are comfortable and intimate enough to engage candidly and fiercely. It also reveals how emotionally fragile they both are--Rudin admits to not...

Angelina Jolie has been caught in the crossfire of the latest Sony leak, in a fiery email exchange between Sony Pictures co-chairperson Amy Pascal and movie producer Scott Rudin.
The emails, obtained by Gawker, see Rudin apparently refer to the actress as a "minimally talented spoiled brat".
Much of the pair's conversation surrounds the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic, which was originally destined for Sony Pictures until it moved to Universal Pictures last month.
The emails date back to February, when David Fincher was first attached to the Steve Jobs film written by Aaron Sorkin. According to the exchange, Jolie wanted Fincher to leave the project to direct her Cleopatra movie, an idea which Rudin appeared to disagree with.
"She is upset about us giving David Jobs. She wants to talk," Pascal allegedly told Rudin, who replied: "She'll survive it. I don't want to waste my time on this."
