Italy’s Adler Entertainment and 39Films have teamed up on an innovative IP incubator called Writing Box that will bring together Italian and global screenwriters with the goal of germinating feature films, TV series and docs for the international market.

The initiative – being launched at Rome’s Mia market next week – is the brainchild of Adler’s Marco Colombo, Mattia della Puppa and Italy-based Argentinian producer Alfredo Federico, founder of Italy’s 39Films. Federico’s credits in the Latin American movie milieu include 2008 Berlin Golden Bear winner “Tropa de Elite” and Guillermo Arriaga’s “The Burning Plain.”

Adler Entertainment is a Milan-based distributor of indie titles such as Sydney Sweeney-starrer “Immaculate” that has branched out into production in recent years. Their productions include “Mogwai: If the Stars Had a Sound,” the doc about cult Scottish band Mogwai that has travelled widely on the fest circuit this year.

HBO Max is out with its list of everything new coming to the streaming service in October and everything leaving at the end of the month.

The list includes HBO Originals like the limited series “The Undoing” starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, out Oct. 25, and David Byrne’s “American Utopia” special event about Byrne’s Broadway show that electrified audiences, out Oct. 17.

There is also Nathan Fielder’s comedic docuseries “How To With John Wilson,” out Oct. 23, and the first season finale of “Lovecraft Country” on Oct. 18.

Among the things leaving at the end of the month are “Amelie,” “Ocean’s 11,” “V For Vendetta,” “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.”

HBO Max is serving up a lot of great new movies this October. Fittingly for the spooky season, the Warner Bros. streaming service is adding a fair few classic horrors to its library next month, but there’s really something for everyone going up – from comedies to romances to sci-fi to superhero films.

Speaking of that last genre, DC lovers will be pleased to note that 2013’s Man of Steel, the movie that kicked off the Dceu, is among the titles arriving on October 1st. Besides that, there’s a bunch of animated DC pics dropping the same day, including Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and All-Star Superman. 2005’s Constantine featuring Keanu Reeves, meanwhile, also debuts on the service from the 1st.

HBO Max has a major job on its hands to justify its approximately $15 a month subscription fee, especially given the strong competition out there from established names like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Disney Plus faced a similar challenge last year in arriving onto an already-saturated streaming marketplace, but at least had the advantage of major series like The Mandalorian to promote. While HBO Max will eventually be home to the Snyder cut of Justice League, and has some originals for its first week of availability, the big draw right now is its enormous back-catalogue of movies.

Given the various corporate elements that are going into HBO Max, including the Warner Bros. library, owners AT&T will be hoping that the combination of brand recognition for HBO programming, and a deep bench of movies, will convince people to add a new subscription to their list. Welcome to the HBO Max era! WarnerMedia’s streaming giant arrived on May 27 and is absolutely bursting with Warner movies, TV shows, and other titles. But time waits for no man or streaming service and each new month HBO Max will be expected to bring new content to the table. Things get started in June 2020 with the first batch of HBO Max new releases.

To be clear, the majority of the original series coming to HBO Max actually belongs to HBO. Shows like I May Destroy You (June 7), Perry Mason (June 21), and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (June 28) all belong to HBO…which now just happens to be a part of HBO Max. Confusing stuff, we know, but rest assured that if you have HBO Max you’ll get these shows…and if you only have HBO, you can go ahead and just get HBO Max for the same price anyway.

HBO Max launches May 27 with a whole lot of content ready to stream immediately. But throughout the nascent streamer’s first month, even more titles will be added, from HBO Max originals like “Adventure Time: Distant Lands Bmo,” to old favorites like “Amelie,” “Black Beauty” and “The Bucket List.”

Other brand-new HBO Max originals include the third season of comedy “Search Party,” and the second seasons of “Doom Patrol,” and “Esme & Roy,” all coming June 25, and on June 18, the second season of “Summer Camp Island” and the series premiere kids competition series “Karma.”

Before HBO Max even launches — it goes live May 27 — WarnerMedia is trying to lure new subscribers by revealing what’s coming next month to the streamer.

The June lineup highlights on HBO Max include all 23 seasons of “South Park,” snapped up in a multiyear, $500 million-plus deal; James Cameron’s Oscar-winning “Titanic”; and the “Adventure Time: Distant Lands” special featuring lovable robot Bmo.

HBO Max, regularly priced at $14.99 per month (the same as HBO Now), will be available on multiple platforms and distributors through deals including with Apple, Google, Charter, Xbox, PlayStation, and AT&T/DirecTV. As of this writing, however, WarnerMedia has not locked in HBO Max deals with Comcast, Roku or Amazon.

What Lies Beneath...

Robert Forster, a character actor best known for “Twin Peaks” and his Oscar-nominated performance in Quentin Tarantino’s “Jackie Brown,” has died. He was 78.

The New York native, who suffered from brain cancer, died Friday in his Los Angeles home.

Forster made his first impression on Hollywood audiences in back-to-back movies set in the Army, the first being in 1967 playing the free-spirited, birthday-suit-loving Army private Ellgee Williams in John Huston’s “Reflections in a Golden Eye,” starring Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor. The next year, he played a half-breed scout in “The Stalking Moon” opposite Gregory Peck.

In the years that followed, Forster had roles in films like “The Lady in Red,” “The Black Hole,” “Delta Force” and “Peacemaker,” but it was Quentin Tarantino’s “Jackie Brown” that gave his career a boost… and an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Robert Forster, an Academy Award nominee for his work as Max Cherry in Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, died at his Los Angeles home today following a brief battle with brain cancer. His death was confirmed by his family and representatives.

Forster appeared in more than 100 films, including his latest, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, released today via Netflix.

Born in Rochester, New York, Forster, a member of Triple Nine Society, graduated from the University of Rochester and then moved to New York City, where he was quickly cast in the Broadway production Mrs. Dally Has a Lover, opposite Arlene Francis.

That tattoo has made beaucoup bucks in book and film forms (both foreign language and Americanized versions), and Claire Foy taking over for Rooney Mara in the title role is seamless. First Contact Entertainment had one goal when developing “Firewall Zero Hour” for the PlayStation Vr: To make a fun, multiplayer first-person shooter in virtual reality.

And, at least played as a communicating group, it seems they’ve succeeded.

“Firewall Zero Hour” is a team-based, tactical multiplayer shooter that takes eight players, splits them into defenders and attackers and unleashes them on a small map. The game feels a bit like an old Rainbow Six title or perhaps Socom, both stripped of some of the nuance and in-game tactical briefings.

One group sets up around a briefcase, dropping a few defensive items like mines, while the other group streams through the maze-like halls of the map trying to take down the defenders so they can grab and hack the briefcase.

There’s a moment in the midst of Brian De Palma’s terrific Mission: Impossible film – the best one of the series still for me – where Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt has fished a floppy disk out of a bin. It’s been dumped there by Jean Reno’s duplicitous character, believed it not to contain the missing half of the Noc list. The Noc list that’s the MacGuffin for the movie, that Hunt and his Imf team are trying to stop falling into the wrong hands.

As it happens, it’s an old-fashioned switcheroo that’s been done, and the disk in the bin does contain the Noc list information. And whilst I didn’t appreciate it at the time, I do wonder if Mission: Impossible sat,...

Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman can't seem to sell their Brooklyn apartment in a new trailer for 5 Flights Up.

The romantic comedy stars the pair as a couple who are trying to escape the "hipster" culture of Brooklyn, but have tremendous trouble selling their apartment.

Freeman serves as one of the producers of 5 Flights Up, which is being directed by Firewall's Richard Loncraine.

The movie has been adapted from the novel Heroic Measures by Canadian author Jill Ciment.

Starring with Keaton and Freeman are Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon, Emmy-winning Good Wife star Carrie Preston and Hedwig and the Angry Inch star Miriam Shor.

5 Flights Up opens on May 8 in the Us. No UK date has been set as yet.

Now here’s an unexpectedly charming on-screen couple: Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton. The pair star in 5 Flights Up, in which they play a married couple moving from their long-time Brooklyn apartment now that the neighborhood has slanted entirely hipster. The trouble of course is finding a buyer and finding a home that’ll suit them in their twilight years.

Sounds simple and charming enough, and with this cast, it’s plenty to attract the big senior audience that just poured out to see The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel at matinees across the country (seriously, don’t see a Meryl Streep movie at 2 Pm on a weekday. You’d think you’re seeing a midnight showing of The Hunger Games).

We don't often feature trailers for romantic dramas on GeekTyrant, but The Age of Adaline deserves mentioning for one simple reason: star Harrison Ford seems to actually give a sh*t about what he's doing in it. In recent years, Ford has leaned on his gruff persona and has - let's admit it - basically coasted through roles in films like Firewall, Cowboys & Aliens, Paranoia, Ender's Game, and Anchorman 2. (I still haven't seen 42, but I have it recorded on my DVR waiting for me to get a free two hours.) The brief glimpse we get of Ford in this trailer makes it look like the old Harrison Ford, the one from the 80s and 90s who put real power behind his performances and was just as believable as an action hero, a father, or a husband.

In it, he opens proceedings by admitting that, following the end to The Last Crusade, he felt he had brought the unlikely Indy trilogy to an appropriate conclusion with a well judged shot of Harrison Ford’s erstwhile hero literally riding off into the sunset. I’m not absolutely convinced that this is a game we can keep playing, but the trailer looks good.

Another exciting casting for Fox’s 24 reboot Live Another Day: Michelle Fairley is joining the show in a major villainous role.

She’ll play Margo, the British widow of a notorious terrorist. This is a role that was previously filled by actress Judy Davis, who had to exit the production due for personal reasons.

Fairley is best known for HBO’s fantasy hit Game of Thrones where she played Catelyn Stark for three seasons. Last year, she had a recurring role on USA’s Suits.

Jack Bauer is back and stuff is blowing up, that’s more or less the message we’ve gathered from the four teasers for 24: Live Another Day that aired during tonight’s Super Bowl. The highly anticipated “event” series, a sequel to 24‘s eight year run on Fox, will follow a fugitive Jack Bauer sucked back into the fight against global terror while in London. Many key cast members from the series are returning, including Kiefer Sutherland, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Kim Raver and William Devane, but what trouble will they get up to? Let’s find out.

Doesn’t offer much, does it? Then again, shooting just began on the miniseries in London, so we’ll likely have to wait a bit longer to see any significant footage.

Fans of 24 have been patiently waiting for the series to receive a proper conclusion ever since season 8 ended on a cliffhanger way back in 2010. For years, a big screen continuation was promised, but numerous attempts to bring Jack Bauer back to life failed again and again (everything from script issues to Kiefer Sutherland being unhappy with the amount of money Fox were offering were given as the reason why).

Well, following last year’s announcement that a 12 episode event series was being planned, we now know that 24: Live Another Day will debut (in the Us at least) with a special two-hour premiere on Monday, May 5th. The official press release also confirms earlier reports that it will be both set and shot in London, with the focus again on Jack as “he attempts to thwart an unthinkable terrorist attack that could change the world forever.”

42 is primed to strike a victory for quality this weekend, though there are plenty of variables that could give Scary Movie 5 a sneaky win. Let's break it down! Finding a comparable for 42 isn't an easy task. Is it Cinderella Man, Glory Road or The Blind Side? You've got openings in the neighborhood of $18 million, $13 million and $34 million, which is to say the results are far from conclusive. The reviews have been mostly positive, and a baseball movie is well-timed, plus we're still in the residual spring break time period. There aren't bankable stars involved (unless you want to argue Harrison Ford, in which case I'd throw Firewall and Morning Glory your way) and it is spotting Scary Movie 5 somewhere around 100 theaters. To this day, Kiefer Sutherland's strategy for promoting his current series Touch is to bang on relentlessly about how he wants to make a 24 movie. Then there's Harrison Ford, who spent half a decade manfully propping up dreck such as Hollywood Homicide and Firewall by hinting at the return of Indiana Jones. The fact that Indiana Jones did eventually return, but as the world's most disappointing fridge-riding alien hunter, is simply an unfortunate by-product of this.
